Even though its not what you wnat to hear, you probably should dig before it puts on leaves. HOWEVER, I told mine one day this spring they were getting moved that weekend. By Saturday, transplanting day, they had leaf buds. Too bad, I moved them anyway. Then the horrible freeze hit about a week later. With some TLC they are totally thriving.

I follow a blog on Southern Living's website by Steve Bender, and he just posted about pruning crepes saying that now is a good time to do it. Hi @Kate Vasquez, I'm sorry, but my Acoma Crepe Myrtle was planted by a landscaping company about 15 years ago. I don't know where they sourced it, and even if I did, the availability as of 15 years ago likely wouldn't be relevant to where it can be sourced today. That being said, I have had good luck finding plants at Capitol Wholesale Nursery - and they've been able to special order plants for me when they didn't have them in stock. I had forgotten all about this thread til I got notified of your post. Since I'm back to answer your question, I'll also take the opportunity to say that with regard to my original question, I ended up planting a Muskogee crape myrtle with light purple flowers. I've been very happy with it and have not had any noticeable problems with powdery mildew. I'm attaching a pic taken today. Thank you to @BarbJP 15-16/9B CA Bay Area and @shedthechrysalis, who pointed me in the direction of the Muskogee variety 5 years ago!

What about something like Orange Rocket Barberry Bushes? They get max 4' tall x 1½' wide, and are somewhat cylindrical. They are very colorful with coral/orange leaves with lime edges. Many Texans are posting gorgeous photos of theirs on my other garden forum (but they are deciduous, so they lose their leaves after spectacular burgundy color in the Fall, leafing out with lime green leaves in Spring). They seem to do well in Texas. I just ordered some thru Walmart and I'm here to say that they that were some of the best-packed, healthiest plant specimens I have ever ordered from ANYPLACE on-line.
