Remembering Music, a wonderful dog. My DH adopted him when he was on death row at the shelter, and Music never stopped being grateful. Blind in one eye, he was all heart. He disappeared one day, and we were told years later that our rotten neighbor shot him for drinking out of his dog's water dish. Couldn't prove it, of course.

Yes Glenda, all race dogs are required to wear booties during the Iditarod (and other major races as well). The mushers carry between 1,500 and 2,500 booties for the race and at a cost of about $1 each, that really adds up. The booties are held in place with velcro and are meant to keep the snow and ice from cutting into the paws. They're also used to keep the medicated and soothing ointments the mushers put on the paws each day, stay on and work better. Booties are easily lost on the trail and in fact a much coveted "souvenir" at the race is a thrown booty. The one I have was lost about 200 feet after the start of the race. I brought back booties for everyone in my graphics team. Fortunately for them they were all brand new, given to me by a musher I know. Used ones really stink! LOL Jodi-

The morning of the ceremonial start of the 2009 Iditarod. The dogs have been let out of the truck. The sleds will be next. The ceremonial race is only 11 miles long and starts on 4th Ave. downtown Anchorage, AK. The musher has an Iditarider (someone who has paid for the privilege of riding in a sled which is not the sled used in the official race) for the 11 miles to Eagle River. The musher usually has a second sled and person with him just to slow down the 16 member dog team. Iditariders can win a seat on a sled in an auction or pay $7,500 outright to sit with their favorite musher. This is a photo of me in 1984 at an art installation in LA by my favorite art teacher Slater Baron also known as "The Lint Lady". She created entire scenes and "paintings" using nothing but lint. This particular installation was dedicated to her parents who were both suffering from Alzheimers. Slater was such a hit at the time that she was featured on several TV shows like "Real People" and "That's Incredible". To this day I can't clean out my dryer lint trap without thinking of her. :-) She and I reconnected five years ago and she is now on my Facebook friend list. Very cool lady. Jodi-

This dog team belongs to four time Iditarod winner Martin Buser, one of my favorite guys in this year's race. This is me with Martin at the Wells Fargo Musher's Banquet the night before the ceremonial start of the race. I told him he was far too handsome and clean cut to be a musher. Most mushers, even at the banquet are in jeans and flannel and have a bearded, scruffy look to them. Martin was the only guy there in a dress shirt and tie. Class act. Jodi-
