Remove Windows Update Icon From Taskbar

Daughter has SP3 update icon in the taskbar along side the volume icon. I have installed SP3blocker on the computer. But how can I remove the update icon? I have searched for an answer but cannot find it. Wizards, please fill me in.

If you right-click on the icon does the appearing drop down menu provide an option; hide, exit? Or working off my memory from my work system,

How about START>Properties>System Tray>Icons>Customize> locate the icon in the appearing window and change setting to hide?

If I remember, you open the update (click on the icon) and click 'custom.' When that window opens, uncheck the box next to SP3. Then close. I think that makes it go away.

I have that problem every once in a while, except only for the Volume, the Safely Add/Remove is always there. I Googled and found the solution Mikie mentioned, for the Volume. It works, for a while, then the V button is gone again. System Restore always said no changes had been made. I've found that rather than going through the Options, a cold reboot will usually work. About the Safely A/R button: does anyone ever use it? DA, I remember from 'way back when there was a thread about that Invisible line. I think I found it then, but never have since then. Computers . . . aren't they fun? When you are having a bad day, try this link. I guarantee you will have a smile on your face, or maybe even LOL! so you did not read the part at the top with the date from 08 where we had been having a discussion about how to remove things using the safely remove icon???? I do recall the discussion we had been having about using the safely remove icon, in that discussion urlee jumped in to make the above comment. So to make things perfectly clear for you the original discussion was concerning the USE of the safely remove icon, not necessarily for use with a memory card, but in general how to use it. This would be why in my response I mentioned the use of both a usb plug in reader and her built in card reader. This whole post was not actually a question on her part but to say had she read her manual she would have seen that she did not need to use the safely remove icon for her memory card using her pc slot. Hence her "LOL"

Unfortunately, DA's solution didn't work... zep, I read the information at your link; and I officially have information overload. : ) Can't... do... it... I'm not really sure what to do. Is it because of the network connection? I see it happened to cg, too. I believe the icon didn't disappear until about a week after I set up the network. And I don't know if this is related; but my internet connection keeps getting cut off constantly when I'm using my laptop (this started a few days ago). Grrr. I think I may try something I read (about the cut-off internet connection) - and that is - shut off both computers; and unpower the modem and router, and repower them up in order of modem, then router (I have to read the instructions again : P )... That probably has nothing to do with the volume icon on the desktop (which ran like a charm for more than 5 years until I set up my network : / )

right when you plug something into your usb ports then it will pop up down in the systray. be sure you right click on that flash drive and let your AV scan it prior to running just in case it could have an infection, many are running into infections traveling on usb flash drives.

So how does this work? When updates are available again will the icon come back to inform you..

yes it will only stop the sp3 from showing up till the time period of the sp3 blocker runs out then it will likely show up again, the blocker only last for a certain amount of time.
All other updates will appear as normal and the icon will appear to inform you.

You can always go to the windows update website and see what you have blocked and unblock them from there too. You can block IE 7 from there also if not wanting it prior to getting sp3.

Add to raven -- the blocker lasts for 12 months. Will all of the bugs or snafus be gone by then? Probably not since the older software and hardware will still be around.
