Question's about Taskbar Notification Area

Hello,

I have noticed two icon items showing up after I boot up the computer. They are Kodak EasyShare and QuickTime Player. They show up on the right side bottom side of the taskbar. I can right click on them and temporaily remove them but I would like to know if there is anyway I can keep them from showing up in the first place? I can access them from my desktop, so why do they have them go to the taskbar?

I had the Kodak EasyShare not showing but, I don't remember how it was done, then when I updated it I noticed it is back in the taskbar again.

I was doing a search and found that there is a Taskbar Notification Area (management) and they explained how to get to it.

1. Right click on Start button, select, properties, Taskbar, customize, scroll down to past items, select required item & scroll bar under behavior, offers options, make selection.

I have to put a check mark in hide inactive icons and then click customize before I can find the above information.

My question's are: can I mess up anything by telling it to make it inactive in the taskbar?

If for some reason I would need to have it back in the taskbar, can I reverse the process in the taskbar notification area?

Do what you wish in the Notification Area management offerings. It only controls the icons. Yes you can reverse it.

When you right-click on them in the area does the appearing drop down window offer Properties or Configuration? Either one may offer you a display option that can be unchecked.

Finally, going into the startup and disabling the entries should do the trick too.

The reason they are showing up in the system tray is because both programs are running at startup and in the background.
Hide inactive icons means just that, it's just hiding them, and no you can't mess anything up.

DA is right, both programs should have options to uncheck for start with windows.

DA is right again, you can uncheck under startup tab, start > run >type > msconfig

If you use CCleaner, it would be under tools > startup

It's amazing how many programs want to start with windows and want to be displayed in the system tray and run all the time in the background.
That's what makes a fast running computer when new, slow to a crawl as time goes on.
Everybody should be aware of what's starting at boot and running in the background.

New Dawn is a climber and grows to be a monster in size. Whatever you grow it on, be certain it can withstand the weight. The trunk of my oldest ND is approximately 6 or more inches in diameter now. Looks like something from the story of Sleeping Beauty. It is only about ten years old. Cuttings taken root easily. Climbers spread in girth of plant canes and trunk(s). The canes are sturdy and larger than most other roses and armed with large thorns. They must be tied to vertical supports, but once they reach the top, they grow over and no longer need tying. Their weight holds them on the top of arbors and trellises (or houses). Climbers can be trimmed back and kept as a large bush rose. However, you must diligent in trimming them back to keep them in that form. They WANT to grow UPward and O U T W A R D. Ramblers, however, grow easily up and over trellises, arches, fences, & etc., pretty much on their own, once you get them started. They need tying up the side to prevent the wind from blowing them down. They can be trimmed back and kept as a shrub as well. They are the easiest to train up onto supports, in my opinion. They have smaller, more delicate canes, smaller and like shrub roses, except that they send out long branched leaders. It has tiny more prickly thorns. Some have few if any thorns at all. Most Ramblers spread by underground runners, the clump growing larger and larger unless contained. They are also great for growing down banks so you don't have to mow those difficult areas. They hold the soil from eroding. My Ramblers are OGR - they bloom only in Spring, but what a SHOW! and their fragrance is superb! Both Climbers and Ramblers root easily form cuttings. 'The latest reviews on the updated version of Avast are not good! Is there a way she can download the older version? Or should she just go with a different antivirus?' I read the complete review, and I fail to see just what you mean. In fact, the new UI is mentioned as being easier to use than the old, and I have to agree with that. The final sentence goes on to say that Avast is the best free AV program available. Now, I do use Microsoft Security Essentials on my Windows 7 laptop, but I have Avast version 5 on my desktop, and I find both to be top-notch.

We set my MIL up on Life Alert. I have doubts about whether she wears the tag regularly, but I can say that it appears to work. We got a call from the Life Alert dispatcher one day saying that they'd received a signal but no one was answering her phone when they called. They had called the emergency dispatch in her town and were giving us notification of that. Meanwhile I tried a couple of times to reach her and finally did. Evidently she had accidentally hit the button and then fallen asleep! I called the L.A. dispatcher back and he notified the emergency responders that all was well. They went ahead with a welfare check, replied to L.A., who then called me back with a follow up. I believe her system monitors into the garage, but not much further. My biggest complaint with L.A. is that once we requested information they hounded us night and day to make the sale.

I left somethings in the nightstand drawer when my sister and I were in Las Vegas this past summer, when my Mom passed away. It was mostly costume jewlery but they called my sister in Canada to let her know. The room was in her name. The items were taken to the security area in the casino and she had to fax an ok for the security people to release it to one of my parents neighbors. They were kind enough to offer to go and pick it up for me..... and I got it from them on my next trip out there. I think after a few years it might be too late though. I'm surprised the hotel management didn't call you if they found it..... but it might not have been turned in. I was lucky.

DA & Randy, I tried the start > run > type > msconfig, and restarted the computer then I got a message telling me that I had made a change and it recommended that I select Normal Startup to have Windows start up normally. So I clicked on that and the icons came back. I know nothing about this and was surprised that I would get the message that I got telling me I had made a change and for me to put it back in normal startup for windows. What gives? I am afraid I am going to mess something up here. I have Windows XPSP2, is that why it doesn't want me to make the change? All I did was remove the checkmark next to Kodak EasyShare, I couldn't find the QuickTime player.

I was afraid if I did not tell it to run in normal startup that I would create a mess that I couldn't get out of. I can right click on both Kodak EasyShare and QuickTime and make it go away from the taskbar, but if it is running at startup like Kodak is showing up there then I am at a loss.

Would think both QuickTime and Kodak programs would have menu configurations to show or not show the system tray icons.

Vista comes with windows defender, maybe XP too if you use it as an add-on.
Its Tools/Sofware Explorer/StartUp ..can disable programs like that from starting at boot easily ..and easily restore them too.

Windows Defender doesn't come with Windows XPSP2 but I can download it free from Microsoft. I thought that was for only spyware and stuff though.

If you remove the checkmark next to Kodak EasyShare, that would be considered a Selective Startup.

With QuickTime, you would open QuickTime Player > Edit > Preferences > QuickTime Preferences > Advanced, and uncheck Install QuickTime icon in system tray.
That would stop the icon, don't think it would stop the program at boot.

I'm suprised you don't use CCleaner
I thought everybody uses it.
Then it's as simple as Delete Entry under Tools/Startup.

I guess Windows Defender would work, I only have that on Vista, don't like the why it wants me to update and scan, but I guess there are settings for that.

Quick time should be listed as "qttask" in MSCONFIG, I think some of the problem with these 2 programs in particular is when they are updated they end up starting up again--yes another poorly written program, Always pursue the program it self to stop it from start up as has been said, or a start up program manager that has also been said...

Use MSCONFIG as last resort:

open MSCONFIG place a check mark in those entries you do not wish to start up reboot xp place a check mark in the box that says "DO NOT SHOW THIS MESSAGE AGAIN" Yes you will be running in SELECTIVE START UP MODE...

Why not download and install our old friend Winpatrol. It's user friendly as well as tried and true.Even with all the access Vista gives me for my startup I still find WP easier.

You just click on it and Scotty will appear on the Notification area. Click on Scotty and various utility options will appear. In the startup just disable Kodak and Quicktime. Plus you will have to do one more.

Just like Randy reported, Winpatrol will want to be part of the startup too. So it also has to be disabled and then it will be an on-demand utility. After its inital use and any other future usage you will only have to close WP from the Notification Area by right-clicking on the icon.

Also, remember I stated disable not delete. Delete is permanent, disable is temporary.

Hello,

Well it's taking me a few days to get back to you. We have had thunderstorms here for the last couple of days and it finally cleared. This computer has been unpluged because of severe storms, so sorry I am late getting back to you.

You are absolutely right there. The people who built this computer took out the icon and also took it out of startup and when I updated it the icon etc came back. I have no idea what they used to get Kodak EasyShare out of the startup program and remove the icon. QuickStart has always been there but I just right click on it and shut it down. I also do the same for Kodak EasyShare.

DA: I have heard of WinPatrol but have never used it. I was pretty new here when these programs were brought up and I was afraid to try anything that I didn't understand. No ones fault, just mine and me being scared to try them.

I have never heard of anyone having concerns when using the startup utility in WinPatrol as long as they didn't delete. I can only say I still use it and have been for years.
