this is a real and serious update having auto run enabled is one way that they have determined that the conflicker worm is spreading so they were telling everyone to disable auto run but it is not a real easy process for some to understand so apparently they have put it in an update which will do it through the update.

The .net framework one did not work properly for many and I would just leave it be for now if you have something you install that needs it you will get a pop up asking for it.

Microsoft is announcing the availability of an update that corrects a functionality feature that can help customers in keeping their systems protected. The update corrects an issue that prevents the NoDriveTypeAutoRun registry key from functioning as expected.

When functioning as expected, the NoDriveTypeAutoRun registry key can be used to selectively disable Autorun functionality (e.g. AutoPlay, double click, and contextual menu features associated with Autorun) for drives on a user's system and network. Disabling Autorun functionality can help protect customers from attack vectors that involve the execution of arbitrary code by Autorun when inserting a CD-ROM device, USB device, network shares, or other media containing a file system with an Autorun.inf file.

Thank you, RC. We are so fortunate having someone with your knowledge on this forum.

I think from now on, instead of just clicking on the shield, I'll go to the MS Update site and see what further information is given. There was nothing to indicate that this was a critical update.

And thanks also for the heads up about the Flash Player update.

I am also getting a notification to install this update. I installed it but when I reboot I still get a notification to install it.

I have also tried to install it via MS Updates. Each time I am told the update installed successfully. But when I reboot I get a message to install this update.

Any ideas?

robk88 try going to the actual windows download site, let it scan your pc choose custom then see if it lists it there as needed, then look to the left for your download history and see if it is listed there as having been previously installed.
Start> all programs> at top windows update

I can't get 967715 to install either, I've tried twice, both times from the Windows Update site, review and install, not the shield and both times it shows installation failed.

XPSP2, I have the disk for SP3 but have never installed it - could that be the problem? I've been trying not to put anything into this 6 yr old computer I could do without, hoping to buy new early this year....recent economy may be postponing that.

Do I need to try installing SP3 - the last I'd heard from the local tech I've used and from reading here there have been continuing problems with it. I don't need problems with invoicing to do, tax time approaching :(

Or am I off base and my failure to install has nothing to do the the service pack?

Last night when I tried to update from the Windows update site, I also got an update failed notice. I tried again a few minutes ago and it updated with no problem, also from the Windows update site.

I have no idea why people are having the failure problem, I would try a few more times and of course try rebooting too.

I have not done sp3 either on mine and don't plan on it, it should not in any way stop us from getting the needed updates if they are suitable for our systems.

I have SP3 on 3 computers with no ill effects at all.

FYI - I had taken my computer to the tech at my ISP a few months ago with an issue, also wanted memory added, and asked him if he would install SP3 for me while it was there on their higher speed access (I didn't have the disk at that time). He said he was having his own problems getting a clean installation for customers unless into a brand new machine and recommended waiting...mine is so far from brand new I've hesitated to try.

My update installed with no failures last night, but when I did a restart the shield came back saying there was updates available. I checked my add/remove list and sure enough the update was there! I clicked on the shield again and said yes to the update. The shield went away and I checked the list again after a few minutes and only 1 update shows in the add/remove program list. This morning when I turned on the computer everything is fine and no shield popped up. Everything seems fine.

I'm running XP with no sp3 installed.

If you do the Flash update and use IE along with another alternative browser you will have to do the update more than once. Use the target browser and access the site via the link RC provided above. The Solution portion of the page will provide a link to the Player Download Center. You should be automatically be linked to the appropriate update.

Then, to do another browser do the same process with the new target browser.

Be sure to be aware of the .exe file names if you save them to install. They are ever so slightly different in name and size.

I noticed that, DA, and did the Flash update with each browser I use.

Had no problem doing the MS update this time.

My update installed too, reboot required. No explaination as to why it failed the first five attempts :(

I put the SP3 disk away again, uninstalled...

This is driving me crazy...I've installed this update three times and each time, it says it is successful. Until I read this post, I was thinking maybe they hadn't gotten it right the fist time :o)

Are there any "easy" answers to this...yes, I'm looking for the easy way out. I've just printed off three pages of possible solutions from the Microsoft site and it's going to take some doing to get this stopped, it seems to me...it does say something about "after five attempts"...I've only installed it three times...if I install two more times, will that take care of it? That was sort of "tongue-in-cheek" but not really...why can't life be a little easier?

Well, I'm at my wit's end now...I've read all I can find on this and it has installed on my computer successfully six times...once again this morning :o(

I went to the Microsoft site and it says I have no new updates available...yet it keeps coming up again and again

I finally was able to download and install both KB967715 and the .NET framework 3.5 update today. Both downloaded and installed without a hitch.

Seems that some of these updates are just "not ready for prime time" when they are first released.
