That is so beautiful. Your house and garden look immaculate and the roses are blooming their heads off. The only problem I see is still way too much lawn! Do you see more roses in your future?

If you want beds at the end of the driveway, make them large enough to fit the shrubs you plan to plant there (kept low enough to see over, for safety) and think about the shape of the adjacent lawn rather than the shape of the beds. In particular, pay attention to how you will mow along the edge of the beds without leaving awkward corners or bits that have to be trimmed by hand. Think of the position and placement of the tree and any shrub plantings in relation to the house. You want to use them to enhance the appearance of the house, while using them to make the transition from tall house to flat lawn seem less abrupt. Make the house "nestle" into the lot. You don't neccesarily need beds out at the end of the driveway, and may be planning them because other people have them, but without a real purpose. They do "dress up" the driveway entrance, but you want to call attention to the house/entry, not the driveway. Unless your border continues up the driveway on the right side and curves around to lead you and your eye to the entry, it only distracts from the house. As they are, they are too small to make a "grand entrance" and may only serve to increase your maintenance chores. If you use the juniper to hide your trash cans, try to use a couple more elsewhere in the planting plan. A one-off plant can tend to call attention to itself, defeating your purpose.

If you're going to own a car it requires that you know something about car maintenance: periodically, the oil and tires must be changed; it must be washed and fluids filled, etc. These are things one learns to do in order to have the pleasure and convenience of owning their own vehicle. Similarly, if you're going to own a lawn, you learn to mow it weekly, edge it periodically, and keep the weeds out, etc. Groundcover is no different. Depending on what plant you make it of, you must learn how to prepare for it, what maintenance that plant requires, and how to control it. Groundcover requires a bit different approach than grass, but it is not necessarily harder or more time consuming. It is just different. I find it to be easier so my yard is 100% groundcover. The number one difference is that weeds must be kept out. This is not harder than weekly mowing. It's just different and there are methods one can employ to make the job easier. In the long run, groundcover can be considerably less work after it's established (which depends on the plant used) than a lawn. Your example of "battling an ivy plant for years" has me thinking that no one is employing any effective methods of controlling it. It is a bit like never mowing, edging or weeding the lawn and then blaming the grass for being out of control. One thing is for sure, only weeds will be happy if you try to grow grass where there not sufficient light to do it. It boils down to the fact that you must have something growing to cover the ground, or you must cover the ground with mulch (and replenish it ongoing). The something growing can be a sad attempt at a lawn (which is what is there now); it can be groundcover; or it can be a mixed variety of plants (like in that picture above). What else is there other than solid hardscaping which is not the least practical? Of those solutions you can already see exactly what one of them looks like because you have it now. You can probably envision the mixed variety of plants covering the ground. Is there any question that it would not be the highest maintenance of any solution? If you take another look at the left side of the photo I submitted of the houses with sloping fronts, you'll notice that it is solid groundcover. It doesn't look like there's a weed in it. You can see at its left side a sharp division where it abuts its neighbor's grass lawn. Each planting is distinctly separate. The groundcover is neither running into the grass, nor is it rampaging over the edges of the walk or steps. How is this even possible? The fact is, it happens in millions of places all over the country. It's obvious that one can learn how to employ plants in such a way. Or they can refuse to do that.

The meadow isn't going to be substantially different from what you currently have. Left totally alone, it will turn back into forest surprisingly fast. Even if you left it for a year, it would fill up with enough woody plants that it would need serious equipment to clear. So it is less a different object, than that your opinion of it changes. Personally, I wouldn't bother trying to preserve the view of the garden by the road. I'd be perfectly willing to deepen or create a shrub border between the road and the lawn, then create a new garden on the other side of that border. That should eat up a fair amount of lawn.

Wow,I knew I was going to see some roses when I seen your post,but this is just gorgeous.I never seen any roses growing anywhere when I lived in Illinois,and I was born and raised there.I bet your neighbors love it.Your roses are beautiful and very healthy looking.Thanks for sharing them.

Well those are just some great pictures of a gorgeous yard. Your roses, grass and home and really inviting. Can you tell us what a few or your roses are? I recognized the 'much reviled knockout hedge' unless I'm mistaken under your windows:) Not too sure about the other lovelies.

Really pretty. Thank you. I'm hoping one day I will have the skills to make all my roses huge and floriferous like yours. I'm guessing you have really good sun and respectable soi in your location.

WOW! All your roses are gorgeous! I bet people love driving by and your neighbors enjoy the view. It's like your house is wearing jewelery and the neighbors you show are very plain. Your roses show your TLC in every terrific photo you've posted. Thanks for sharing.

I have posted these pics multiple times but I am just amazed that they look so good this time of the year and just wanted to share the pics. I thought the late frost this spring would do everything in and everything looked withered and DEAD, most of them including living easy and carefree wonder died down to the mulch line. It's amazing how quickly the came back up. All the shrub roses made it. I lost my hybrid teas, except ofcourse Love and Peace which is a hardy beast lurking under the HT tag. I am a little dissapointed with the climbers, Rosarium utersen, Eden, Viking rose, no rebloom so far. Ramblin red always has a spray or one..Now all the roses have established themselves, I have stopped being a perfectionist needing spotless leaves and gardening seems easy again!
