Wow OJ, clementines only $2.77.

I paid $7.99 the other day and was just happy to find them!

Living up north where there is only one grocery store isn't all ways the best.

I've even gone for apples and there were no apples in the store!

Small towns are nice, just not for shopping.

Sorry to rain on your parade, Kathy. You could visit one of our discount grocers (don't recall just which one) but the special was last week, though I think one is offering that price again this week - till Thurs.

You could likely find a box of clementines if you were to visit one of those stores in a nearby Canadian city ... but I think that your customs people would be somewhat displeased with your effort to take them home with you; you'd have to eat them all on the spot, I fear!

They're usually around $5.00, but were on special at the price that I quoted.

However, we often are rather jealous of the low prices that you U.S. folks pay for a number of grocery items, as they often seem to be more expensive, around here.

We used to say that part of the missionary's training program was to learn to make a nickel do a dollar's worth of work.

It's been over 45 years since I left Korea, where we'd worked to help refugees try to get back on their feet, having left their earlier place with nothing but their clothes on their backs ... and, in an area devastated by a recent war, there were precious few jobs to be had.

I noticed that an hour ago, while eating a cupcake from a paper cup, I took a dull table knife to scrape the crumbs from the paper cup. I don't do that often.

I hope that you and yours find this season to be an insipring one, encouraging you to have an even more generous spirit. My boss recommended a couple of thousand years ago that we love our neighbours as ourselves ... and it seems to me that others might find that a better family, community, nation and world might develop were more of us to practise such a project more thoroughly.

Last week I paid $4.89 for a 3# bag of Clementines. They were oh, so good. When our grocery gets them in, they are usually in 5# crates which is hard for me to bring up in my little two wheel cart up our second floor APT. I had asked the produce guy if they could get them in the 3# bags and he finally did it. Dottie

Thank you, Carly and Mike, I'm doing fine, I've just had some disturbing issues coming up with both my job as well as my husband's, which has taken me away from forum activity. My citrus are all doing very well, time for some micronutrients, as for us in this part of S. California, the cold temps in combination with our drenching winter rains just leach out all the micronutrients in our soil, and what's left gets locked out due to our somewhat higher pH. So, I need to apply micronutrients to the soil as well as with a foliar application starting now. Interestingly, some citrus are nearly unaffected, like my Cara Cara, while others, like my blood oranges are really getting chlorotic looking. I think I'll also apply some chicken manure as well, but not so sure extra nitrogen at this point in the season is really helpful. It truly is a micronutrient issue we have here, especially those of us on DG (decomposed granite) soils. So, my line up is pretty much complete, unless I come across a Sumo mandarin in the near future (although I have a little seedling limping along). Picked one Oro Blanco a little early just to test, and it was so sweet, it tasted like it had sugar on it, but it was a wee bit dry. First crop, so not expecting great things. Evan, most likely just marketed by Sunkist, purchased from USA commercial satsuma growers. I think citrus, especially mandarins, are really seeing a renaissance here in the USA, as parents try to find healthier snacks for their kiddos. One of the reasons the "Cutie" marketing ploy to sell small, seedless, easy to peel super sweet mandarin cultivars has seen such success. I find this funny. I've always had a love affair with that type of mandarin. Growing up as a kid in Orange County, I always looked forward to my little Clementine mandarin tucked into the toe of my Christmas stocking. It was better than candy. We had citrus all the time, the first house I lived in (and was born in), was built in an old Valencia orange orchard. My dad went to the developer and told him not to take out all the beautiful orange trees - to leave a few in each backyard. That it would sell the houses faster. The builder did, it did sell the homes faster, and we had 3 or 4 beautiful orange trees in our yard, and had fresh OJ every morning. Fond memories of citrus as a kid. Patty S.

I am doing pumpkin pie this weekend. Here is a great recipe for pastry: http://www.mennonitegirlscancook.ca/2008/10/gluten-free-pastry.html I change it to full lard (can't have dairy) and used more tapioca in place of corn starch and more rice flour in place of potato starch. My MIL makes it as is and really likes it. Sorry I have no say for original recipe because I have to improvise but still love it. I improvise another recipe (Company's Coming Almond Torte) to this : 1/2 cup butter (I use coconut oil but give butter to those not bothered by dairy) 1/2 cup sugar 1 cup ground almonds 3 egg yolks 2 tsp vanilla Mix all these and fold in 3 egg whites I will lay out fruit (canned peaches usually) on the bottom of a parchment lined 8x8 pan and pour batter on top. Bake at 350 for 35 min or so. Top with whipped cream. I use this one a lot. It is kind of like a sponge, I think.

Mtn, I went to the larger market chain after I wrote my post and still a lot of empty shelves. No eggs, limited supply of milk, no paper goods (limited to one package if there are any) . No chicken. Limited variety of canned soups. Plenty of vegetables and fruit, and this time they had a "normal" selection of bread. I also found some fresh turkey thighs that DH loves and will be happy to cook in his Green Egg. So I think part of the problem is that I would need to stop in at the 4 local supermarkets to get everything I would normally use, which isn't a great idea at the moment. The expensive market has a good selection of beef, but you will pay $32/lb for a steak, so not in the budget for many. I think it is just a matter of population density and some hoarding. But OMG, there was a woman at the supermarket with 4 kids. A baby in a stroller, maybe a 6 and 10 year old and an older teen girl. No masks or gloves on any of them. Why wouldn't you leave the kids with the older teen, even if you just left them all in the car outside? Everyone else was keeping their distance, most were wearing masks and a fair number also had gloves on. They had a line outside to limit people in the store and to give everyone a cart that had been wiped down.

I paid $8 just before Thanksgiving (US-Nov 26) and $3.99 this week. I love clementines, wish they were available year-round.

We used to get clementines from Spain at the holidays. They stopped importing them and now they are from California. Not the same, and we sure miss the REAL ones as we call them. They were pricey but worth it!

I am heading to Walmart tomorrow just to see if I can find some. They were 7.99 at the grocery store on Monday. I usually buy them at least twice a month during this time of year. I love them! We always got one in the toe of our Christmas Stocking-
