Very mixed feelings

My wonderful dear friend, confidant & sister-in-law passed over tonight. She has been ill for a few months but the last few weeks have been incredibly painful for her.

I am glad she is out of pain but I will miss her terribly. We still need to keep Christmas as normal as possible for our Grandson...but it is hard.

It will be a very different time for us all this year.

I'm so sorry for your loss, it is never easy but it is especially hard at this time of year.
How old is your grandson, Taigen?

I understand. My husband died on the 20ieth and was buried on the 24 and it was the hardest day of my life. We had gone to his Mothers for Christmas and his birthday and it was so sad but we made it through and made sure the kids still had their Christmas. Just keep on keeping on and it will all fall into place.

It's going to take a while, Aviastar...the soil up there is extremely thin in many places, so it'll be a couple years probably before I can get it done. For now, I have:Dainty Bess and Mystery Peachy-pink HT right up close to Wland. I also stuck in an own-root Comtesse du Cayla that had out-grown it's pot; perhaps too strong of a colour, but maybe it'll blend in.I put Mrs. Sam clg about 4 meters away;hopefully this'll grow up with an ash tree.I think that's all for this year, unless I decide to plant out my own-root Pink Mermaid behind Wland; it's still kinda small, though. The plan for future years is:put in a peachy-pinkie climber/rambler opposite Mrs Sam (Paul Noel, Paul Transon, Meg...lots of choices),and maybe another such climber can go into the arms of a big wild rose that's already there, between Mrs Sam and Wland,or else perhaps this'd be the spot for the purple-leaved shrub.Lorapetalums do look beautiful, but I got the idea from Internet that they prefer acid soil, so I doubt they'd like my garden much.Cotinus,berberis and Physocarpus op. might be better choices, but there's a real good'un that I found, too: Sambucus niger Black Lace or Black Beauty!!!! Deciduous,but very beautiful, judging from the photos,and quite delicate-looking. Better yet, sambuca does grow wild in the woods around here, so that makes me think it might do well in my garden. I also found a purple-leaf weigela offered here in Italy... Then,in front of the climbers/ tall shrubs,I could put in the more graceful shrub-roses ; those with cascading habits; I'm thinking of Hybrid musks in particular, but maybe also Phyllis Bide, grown as a cascader...another Cornelia, say, and a Francesca...then, if it all seems to welcome a touch of contrast, maybe a dark pum-coloured rose...but for this year, we're at the tail end of planting season, and I've already put in more than 100 baby roses ,so I think I've probably already really over-extended myself! bart

Salvia guaranitica 'Argentine Skies'

I grew Argentine Skies in Louisiana, USA for a number of years. Baton Rouge, LA has hot, humid summers, and occasinal winter freezes with temperatures dropping several degrees below freezing on several occasions each winter (zone 8, with winter temp typically reaching about 25 farenheit, perhaps -4 C?). Like most salvias, Argentine Skies would usually freexe back to the ground each winter. It spread far more rapidly than most other guaraniticas, and was generally more winter hardy. It was always reliably hardy for me in Baton Rouge. However, it was a spring and fall bloomer rather than a summer-long bloomer like the "straight" species or Black and Blue, or a fall bloomer like some of the other cultivars. I too liked the flowers, but wished they were produced in more profusion. Now I am growing Argentine Skies in Pennsylvania, which has cold winters (zone 6, with freezing weather typically from December thru March and low temps near 0 F, -15 C?). With winter protection it has survived the past several winters. In its current location it is overrun by other plants in the summer, so bloom is sparse. I need to move it to a better spot before I can really evaluate how well it will bloom here.

Colleen, you are correct that an uninhabited home cannot be fully insured, and so my brother is looking into having the house renovated somewhat in order to make it rentable. It has the original wiring from 1928 when it was built, and so that may be a major problem. They also need to seal all the holes where the mice get in, and that may not be possible, as some get in through the attic. We did not get an update this week on DF - we tried to call Karen, but she has been out of town on business a lot lately. Unfortunately, her work requires her to travel a lot, including trips every spring to D.C. to advise legislators on banking law, which is her specialty. The other trips are to meet with bankers in other parts of Texas, and so it is pretty boring. We did not get to discuss the estate the previous week-end because our niece tried to set it up and instead ended up antagonizing too many people - she's not as diplomatic as she thinks. Her father (Mike) has very different ideas about what to do with the estate than Kevin and I do. Karen was not feeling well, and I did not want to have this discussion when she is ill. Mother's will went into probate last week, but we know very little of the details yet. Lars

Welcome! We went through something similar, only it was X bad-mouthing DH (then boyfriend). DS was 3-4 when X and I split and DH and I (and X and his GF) started dating. X would say terribly nasty things about DH and it would upset DS very much. DS genuinely liked DH so it hurt him to hear these bad things about someone he liked. DH decided to "back off". In other words, he disengaged from DS to the point where DS rarely even saw him. He didn't disengage because of anything DS said or did (DS was never mean to DH), but he disengaged so DS wouldn't have to hear the bad things from X. This hurt DS even more. Basically, X caused DH to all-but abandon DS. This FURIATED me because I was expected to still be engaged with HIS daughter (attend school and sporting events, etc.), but he has an excuse for not putting any effort into DS. After about a year of that, I quit trying to get DH to care about DS and DS quit asking about DH or expecting to see him or SD. In turn, I quit caring if I saw DH and SD. DS and I had things to do and they had things to do, and slowly (over about 3 years) we were so busy with our separate things we didn't have time for things together. Finally, 4+ years into our relationship, I ended things with DH. It had been a long time coming. He wasn't happy with that (I'm still not sure what he was holding on to), and started re-engaging with DS. DS would be so excited to see DH and SD at his sporting events, and I could see a change in DH, too. He looked like he was enjoying them. Now (we've been married for 6 months, but together for 7 1/2 years), DH and DS have the coolest relationship. DS respects him, and DH genuinely likes DS's personality. I am still DS's parent, but DS respects that DH is a parent, too, even if he isn't his own. They have common interests that don't include me. And DH is seeing his re-engagement pay off. Just the other night, DH told me (for the first time ever) how proud he was of DS. I told DH he could take a little credit for himself because he's worked with DS and DS listens to him. I guess my point is don't back away, but don't push, either. Stay as involved as you always are so she can see consistency. Kids need consistency.

I can understand your mixed feelings. When someone is in a great deal of pain, you just want the pain to end for them, but that leaves such a big void for you. It sounds like you had a wonderful relationship with your SIL. As Ruthie said, you just have to keep on keeping on.....so very sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry! It is hard to lose a loved one any time, but the holidays seem especially hard to bear.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Taigen. I lost one of my sisters a couple of years ago, and I know she was in a lot of pain and was ok with going and is in a better place, but I still miss her. ((((((Taigen))))))

I'm so sorry. What a sad loss. My sister died 18 years ago on December 17th, so she is always on my mind at the holidays. I think she would be anyway, no matter what her anniversary date. It's good that you are thinking of her grandson. She'd want it that way, I am sure.

I, too, am sorry for your loss and can relate to your feelings.

My husband died April 17, 2007 and today would have been his 58th birthday - the pain never goes away for us but we just learn to live with it. Try to think of all the wonderful memories you created with your SIL.

I'm sorry for your loss, taigen.
I, too, can relate. My first wife loved Christmas. She would be as giddy as a little kid during the holidays. We were married on the 27th of December because the church was so beautiful with all the decorations. 16 years later our Christmas celebration was in a hospital room as Mary fought ovarian cancer. She was able to come home for our anniversary but died on the 30th. Christmas is always a tough season to get through.

So sorry to hear of your loss. Your sister may always be with you She may be in a different dimension right now but all that love and care and sharing is still there. She left you with you being grateful that she was now out of pain and that is something to be grateful for.
I think it is a tribute to her to go on with the decorations and the spirit of the holiday knowing that that is what she would have wanted

My condolences on your loss. My favorite aunt died on Christmas Eve and we knew it was coming. Still something I think about this time of year. Hope it doesn't get the better of you. Try to concentrate on the good thoughts, the happy moments and especially the funniest things that have happened.
