No..I love Spring. If doing all the planting and weeding and freezing of produce is too much she should simply cut back on what she does...maybe grow a butterfly garden instead...that's fun too and less work!

I like the warmer weather, getting plants in etc, but don't like it when it goes from cold to HOT1 Warm is good!, Especially with so much white stuff on the ground.

It sounds like your friend is dreading more the passage of time and growing older and wondering how much longer she can be self sufficient. I think that is a concern for all of us, but as for me, I look forward to spring. I hate cold weather, and what I call call cold weather, you would snicker at. I dread winter. It is much harder for me to get out in the rain and mud and take care of my animals. If I didn't have to go out and I could sit by the fire and cook and watch tv, I'd probably like it a whole lot more....but I am afraid to slow down. In fact, as much as possible, I plan to speed up. I think in order to be happy, you have to have something to look forward to....I am looking forward to being outside more and maybe riding again. Looking at some new places for sale. Making plans to move...if this place sells....and I am already packing.

That's true, Marilyn, and I am as well. I've watched one of my neighbors up the road, a wonderful gardener, give up gardening plot by plot, and now I'm forced to do the same thing.

Something else that mars spring for me is the arrival of ticks. I'm fairly certain I never fully recovered from the tick bites I received in 2010 and 2011. And then last year a tick embedded itself in my head--in March! That was thanks to the warm winter, I'm sure, but ticks will be here in great numbers this year, if not in March, surely in April and beyond.

The thing I dislike about spring is having to shed my winter coat. In the winter I can throw a nice coat and scarf over any crumby outfit to go run errands. In spring, I have to change into something decent, plus expose my rolls of fat to the world.

I do like winter because I can be cozy inside my house. The neighbors kids (who are cute but boisterous) are not playing and yelling in their backyard, or kicking the soccer ball against the fence. Winter is quiet. Spring also means that the horrible heat of summer is on the way, my most disliked season.

And I hate getting old, too. Once spring arrives and I head outdoors, I realize each year that I am a little slower than last last year. Blech.

I am so ready for spring!! The trees are budding out, the flowers are coming up and blooming, the grass goes green again... and the warm temps return.

YEAH! I can ride my bike more often again! :)

I do love spring--the warmer weather, the soft pastel colors of the new grass and flowers, the opportunities of more outdoor activities, gardening, etc.

BUT

I detest the hot weather of summer. My allergies are almost unbearable in spring (including a few migraines most weeks). So yes, very mixed feelings here at times

I hate long cold winters so I am looking forward to spring. The allergies will start up again but my lilacs will be in their glory. I am hoping for a cool summer.

Ah Alisande, I get it - there's a lot of work associated with the warmer weather and longer days. The intense activity can be taxing, but to me, it part of the rhythm of the year - and much more rewarding than some busy times.
I admit, getting the garden bed cleared of the winter crops, improved and replanted needs to happen pretty quickly- especially in my climate. The flower beds are in dire need of of much and weeding.
But, the joy and satisfaction balances the effort.
I suspect (and hope) Spring joy will find you. Let us know when it does!

I also don't look forward to Spring. I'm with the others who suffer with allergies. I'm allergic to everything that grows outside. Not ideal when you live out of town with woods all around, haha. Last Spring my allergies were so bad my eyes were crusted shut every morning. The constant pressure and pain in my forehead, cheeks, eyes, ears, temples are completely draining after awhile. And all that is WITH Allegra, 2 nasal sprays and allergy shots. Used to be so much worse.

It also means the heat and humidity of summer is near. I just can't take the heat and humidity.

The good thing about Spring/warmer weather?.....hmmmm, motorcycle rides with DH.

I agree with the blogger 100%. I like winter and dread spring like others dread winter. I am a freak in my own family .Kids and husband love this time of year and like to spring ahead with the clocks. Daughter said it's her favorite day of the year. My favorite day is when we turn them back. Spring is noisy and much more frenetic. And every spring it does show how much older one got over the winter. I'm outside for an hour a day now walking the dogs, but in the summer we are out all the time. I worry about ticks and fleas, but mostly I dread the drought and super heat we have every year. I never want to give up this big old farmhouse and the yard with the ponds and beehive but they are just worries I don't need. Already the spring got off to a bad start when I found my hive of bees dead for the third year on a row.

Ah, beautiful spring! I have been waiting for it since November. It can't get here too soon for me. I love everything about it. Come on, Spring!

I can totally relate to your friends feelings about spring. I used to feel somewhat the same way about outdoor yard work in general. Now that I've given up my house for apartment living, I can just sit back and enjoy the change. I used to hate summer too but central air conditioning solved that problem very nicely.

Right at the moment, I'm truly anxious for it to get here! I'm looking out at about four more inches of new snow, and the forecast is for more during the day.

I have mixed feelings. I hate the cold weather yet go out in it everyday to walk my dogs and I love not having to deal with bugs and sweat. But I hate putting all those clothes on and the coats and boots for the dogs. It takes so much time. Also, there is a lot of work to do in the warmer weather. In the winter I don't feel so guilty just taking it easy, but in the spring/summer I feel like I should be outside. Also, I have to get up early and walk the dogs so they don't get heat stressed, whereas like today I can lounge and go out whenever.

I forgot to mention the allergies. Mine are almost as nasty as katlans.

But I am so ready to quit being a couch potato! I veg inside during the winter. To cold out. Usually to wet and cold out.

Gimme spring. I will sneeze more, blow my nose constantly, but I get to go outside... work in my yard, ride my bike, go an walks... sit out in the sun or shade depending on temps....

Yes, please give me spring.

Her lament is not about the Season of the Year, but about the physical demands of the gardening -- which she is Imposing on herself -- and the fact that her personal Spring is over. It's natural to miss that vigor and to wonder how one will cope with accelerating physical decline. I try to remind myself that there is indeed 'a time for every purpose under Heaven', and to embrace My Season.

We go to daylight savings time tonight. I don't like waking up in the dark, and I really feel old when I'm tired before the sun goes down!

Not dreading spring at all. I admit though, my garden was put to grass for several years because my kids had more summer events than hoeing time. I have a huge farm yard that needs attention, horses, cattle and all the care of the animals. We're on the road to work, camps or sporting events quite a bit. When we have some time we'll travel to one of the grandparents who live out of town.
Spring is something I look forward to. Walking out to the mail box on our gravel road without a coat or winter shoes. The birds singing or pecking on the new green grass, as the dogs find it jolly to chase the bird hunting cats. The cats are feeling perky too and don't seem to mind the play.
Unlike your friend, I don't put up spinach and eggplant for the winter. During the winter, I hope what we find in the produce isle will suffice. Saves me a bunch of stress in the spring and summer. As much as I like to garden I've finally learned what makes me stress and what I can handle. So there are tomato barrels on the deck, fresh corn from the in laws and squash, apples and other foods from friends.
I may not be as rewarding as a freezer full of summer harvest but it does save me plenty of time. Works for me.

I love spring and all it represents....The call to my garden even at 73 years old means sore muscles and back spasms but I love it. I do too, as she mentioned, look for that brief period when winter takes hold and I don't have to be out there and can rest and relax....

I'm not a gardener do like to sit under my Patio table screen I like fall and winter best and dont like the long days

i look forward to shedding my winter coat and boots.

I love spring - no more or no less than any other season, as they all have their unique appeal to me.
I do look forward to being outside more, and the longer days. I am even looking forward to my gardening!

Even though I live in the country, ticks aren't a problem here. I am remembering being attacked by killer bees last spring, and I know they will start to swarm soon. I wasn't allergic last time....but I wouldn't want to go through that again...plus, it almost killed one of my dogs. I hate the idea of getting older. I don't feel old....although I am reminded by my bad knee and my wrinkles. My knee has hurt for so long, I am getting used to it. I solve the wrinkle problem by not looking in the mirror any more than I have to.

I love spring, but can't do much outside at all anymore, our son does a lot, and I guess I'll sit on the porch and watch. Frustrating at times!

dedtired - I am just like you - I put on the hat, scarf and coat over my "house outfit" to walk the dog etc. and look just fine. For the summer (note I did not say spring because really spring is usually freezing) I have 2 cotton coats that I bought at consignment shops - they are not lined and are about the same weight as a cotton housecoat. So I put those on, particularly when I have to walk our dog - he is always on a leash so I have to go out with him. I have summer hats that I put on my head (auburn hair - coloured of course, but it fades and I burn in a nanosecond anyway). I also suffer horribly from allergies and am allergic to anti-histamine. I did try the shots but had a reaction to them but I so love the really warm summers - 90 F would suit me just fine - with no sun. Bugs love me - the whole animal kingdom does. I remember back in the day when we actually had 4 seasons, now we seem to have one - winter and a bit of summer which is really like spring used to be.

heather_on - Bite your tongue. Please not a COLD summer in Ontario (at least not in Toronto). We have had a few and frankly I do remember people complaining about them. I hate the snow and ice and my 9 year old dog loves to eat it and we seem to have salt alternative everywhere. I have been looking at him and asking him why he can't use the toilet - that is how much I hate going out in the cold. It isn't the walking part I hate - it is the "out". Eskies are very cat like - except they need to go out. So I am hoping for a "real" spring - back when "put on your Easter bonnet" was possible.

Well I'm looking forward to spring AND a slightly cooler than normal summer. I do not enjoy days over a ninety. Yesterday, I spotted about five fish in my pond. The rest are still hiding. Looking forward to seeing my first robin of the year.

I like the warmer weather, but warmer weather brings the snakes! so cold weather is best for us here.
I think I'd rather have summer when they are more in hiding to stay cool.

Nope, I love spring. The chiggers aren't out at first and everything is fresh and blooming and I plant my containers full of flowers and the hummingbirds come back and the other birds sing and make nests, I love all that. We missed that when we were living in FL, the reawakening of springtime.
