Do you check your sales receipts?

Often I don't check my grocery store receipts. Fortunately I did check today but only after I got home.

I discovered that I had been charged $25 for 48 (yes, 48) pounds of bananas. I had purchased about 4 pounds. I'm sure the store will correct this unless they can prove that I have a house full of monkeys!!

Yes, I check my receipts MOST of the time, but especially Walmart receipts - they are 'famous' for charging for more than the cost of the items or for more than you actually got. They have cameras over all the registers, so it's not hard to decide if a claim is true or not. I also tally in my head as I go along, so I have a good idea of about what the total should be. If it's more than a few dollars off, I don't leave the store until it's corrected.

you bet they'll repay you plus, in some states, extra...that's just plain crazy...

we save all recipts plus i have a tub on the table to save anything from christmas...i also save them for a month after in case the family need to return something...

I use firefox (love it!) and double check on IE. I don't have netscape installed (I really hate it!!) so I can't tell you about netscape however I can say that spewey is right and that IE handles some html coding poorly. I have had problems with picture resizing (my fault). Firefox sizes larger photos to fit on the screen. IE doesn't do this. Sometimes I forget this and check my page and end up with this huge photo. So I have to go back to photoshop and resize it so it doesn't fall off the screen in IE. Other problems I have seen have to do with formatting. I will double check my code and it appears fine however IE doesn't seem to handle it like firefox. I guess I should just start developing using IE and that would save me a step! -renee

Been there, done that...lint is such a HUGE annoyance to my life. We're in a 2nd floor condo where the dryer vent ducting goes to the roof through the attic over 20 feet and several elbows. My husband bought the condo years before we met, and the ducting was clogged after several years. At the time, he decided to disconnect the vent from the duct. The resulting moisture did some damage to the cabinetry (swelling of the particle board, even under layers of oil-based paint). Soon after we married, he decided we needed to fix the problem correctly. He went up into the attic and disassembled the ducting, brought it outside, and blew it out with his air compressor. I pushed some cleaning tool through it as well. We can't be doing this regularly! I mean preferably, never again! So, I had him put a filter -- a gallon paint strainer -- over the dryer vent where it connects to the machine. This clogs every month or so, we pull the machine out, disconnect the vent, clean the strainer, and put it back. This is still an annoying chore, but not the nightmare of dealing with the whole duct run. My husband had a cool idea, that what we need to do is sew a new, longer strainer that tapers to a skinny point, so that even when it clogs at the point, there can still be air flowing past the clogged strainer, and we should be able to go longer between cleanings. We got a new dryer last summer, and pulled the ducting out of the attic to clean it -- but it was already clean as a whistle. So, our secondary filter system has kept the duct run clean for 9 years. I found you can buy secondary lint traps with a door that opens to clean them out, but we don't have room to install the box in our laundry room, and I don't think it would work any better or be easier to clean than our homemade filter. When I redo the floor, I plan to put magic slider thingies under the dryer feet to make it easier to move in and out, plus I won't want to gouge my new floor. I have researched other solutions. People claim that solid metal vent will maintain better airflow than pleated, but I think it will still clog because we need 2 90-degree elbows to get it connected to the duct in the wall. And if it clogs, how do we pull out the machine with a non-stretching vent? If we could move the duct in the wall to match the dryer vent outlet, that would eliminate 2 elbows and would probably help... I also found you can install a secondary fan in the ducting near the exit, increasing the airspeed in long ducts so the lint won't clog. They cost $150-200, but if I never had to clean out the duct run or pull out the dryer to clean my makeshift secondary lint trap ever again, it would be well worth it. I also think that our ducting is leaky somewhere, because rooms on the other side of the wall (our master bath) get crusted with lint all the time. Finding and sealing those leaks would probably improve airspeed some, plus save me tons of work cleaning the lint all the time. I think the additional fan is the way to go. In 2 other areas where we replaced an ineffective low-cfm cheap fan with a high-cfm good one, like the hood over our cooktop, it made an amazing difference, night and day. I've used the Sunday paper insert places. Don't have need for a check printer anymore though. I last got them from the bank and will reorder through there if I need more, but I'm sure I won't. My last box cost about $4 for shipping and no charge for printing. Actually I got two boxes for that price since they goofed and started the checks at 1000 rather than 10000 as I ordered so I got the reprint free of course and the bank manager said to keep (and use if I want) the "error" checks. Which I did and will if I need more. I had to take a look at the last checks written in about the last year. Two to the plumber last September. One to the guy who shoveled for me this past winter and 3 medical bills that weren't set up yet in the electronic payment. I'll probably have checks left for my estate to use.

Fairly often, and if I find an undercharge, or too much change, I call it to their attention. Several years ago, when the scanners came in rather than the sticker with the price on each item, there was a bunker with frozen fish on sale, with a placard showing the price per pound over the bunker. When I checked the price on the item, the amount per pound was different/higher. I called it to an employee's attention, he said that the price on the placard was when it had been on sale, the day before. I told him that I should get the advertised price, he said that the sale price was no longer available, I insisted ... he ended up agreeing and so marked my package. I walked around the store for ten minutes or a quarter hour, returned to the fish bunker ... and the sale price placard was still up. I asked for the store manager, called the situation to his attention and told him of my suspicion that there was duplicity afoot. That we used to have the price on each item that was going through the register, so could check. As it is these days, we almost need to write down the price on the shelf for each item, to check with the receipt. I don't often find errors on the receipt ... and I do find that the line item for sale goods usually lists the reg. price, then the amount of saving on the discount below it. ole joyful

I always check my grocery receipts. One time my total seemed very high and I was charged for 100 cantaloupes instead of one. An honest mistake. Another time the checker (young kid) was drinking a can of cherry coke and when I got home I noticed that he had charged me for it! You better bet I was back at that store in a heartbeat to point out his "mistake".

Like kay, I keep a running tally in my head and usually I'm very close. If not, I check the receipt before walking away from the register.

Yes, and a number of times, I've found that I was charged for things I didn't want--several times, WalMart has added a service contract on things without even asking.

Also a good idea to carefully check your change. We've been shortchanged a number of times lately. Not sure if the sales people are that stupid (how dumb do you have to be to not be able to read and count out the change the register TELLS you to give the customer) or if they're purposely doing it, and adding our change to a friend who may come through the line later? Frankly, I suspect it's the latter--it's been happening too frequently lately.

I mostly buy groceries at Krogers and I don't check my receipts until I get home because I don't like standing around the area of the checkouts, which is right near the door with people coming and going.

Recently after shopping at KMart, and checking my receipt at home, I noticed a bag of Hershey kisses had not been rung up. It was about 2 weeks before I got back to KMart, and I took the candy and receipt to show them. I was thanked, twice, for doing that.

So it works both ways.

I self scan and look each time I scan something. It was BOGO blueberries and blackberries. I scanned one for $3.99 and the next said 0, but when I got home I was charged for both. So I took the receipt in and got my $3.99 tonight.

Of course I check. Why wouldn't you?

I also stand to the side of the pharmacy counter and make sure I've received *my* order -- correct medicine, correct strength, correct number of pills. (I don't actually count the pills until I get home; that hasn't been an issue.) They won't credit your account if you've left the pharmacy, and I don't want to make another trip anyway.

Always check your recipes.I brought Liz Taylors parfume.I brought two and was charged for one.I took it back .It works both ways.Honesty is your best policy.

No I dont. But I watch like a hawk when I'm at the checkout. And I prefer those scan yourself checkouts. If there's a problem, I deal with it before I leave the store.

Lazy? Careless? Distracted?

Me: Guilty to all of the above. I have often vowed to check the receipt or watch the screen when the cashier is ringing up, but more often than not, I never even look at the total when I sign for the credit card receipt. Sometimes I'm still taking things out of the cart & can barely keep ahead of the cashier's ringing things up.

I feel like I would notice if the total was way out of bounds, but ... maybe not? If I had to pinch my pennies, I undoubtedly would focus on this more, which, I know, flies in the face of my saying "I am not a spendthrift."

I rarely do though I really should. I watch usually as things are rung up, especially if I bought sale/clearance items because they often don't ring up correctly. If something seems higher than I expected, I'll take a look then but I'm not as diligent as I should be, especially since I use cards for 99% of my purchases and there's less connect with the money when you swipe a card compared to counting out cash.

When you go to those "self check out" you are knocking some kid out of a job.I will stand in line no matter how long it takes.You are paying the same thing.Please think about it the next time.Jobs going overseas and people doing what someone else could be paid for doing.

Yes.....I went back to Safeway today, I drive past that store every day so it's not out of my way to stop, they over charged me $1.36....but why should I shop a sale and NOT get the advertised price? Right!

I do now. Two nights before this past Thanksgiving I needed to get some last minutes groceries as the number of guests had changed.

I bought:

2 bottles of Candied Ginger 50% off of $10.99 (each)
Garlic 4/2.00
bag of Potatoes $1.99
Butter $1.49
3 - 12 packs of Coke
a loaf of Bread

The cashier who rang me up said the candied ginger was on sale as a BOGO, on top of being 50% off of each.

My bill came to $37!!! I KNEW that was high but there was 30 people in line behind me, so I took it all to my car, got in and re-read my receipt.
The cashier charged me FULL price for BOTH of the candied ginger and for 4 heads of Lettuce (What?!?!)! The heads of lettuce alone were accounting for $8.00 of the overcharge. So I go back in to their service desk and wait for 35 minutes their and straighten it all out. The nice lady gives me the garlic that they mistakenly added as lettuce, for free. And I got $15 back for being over charged for the candied ginger. A major, major mess, but one I learned from!

I especially check Walmart's after a cashier insisted a salad dressing was a dollar higher, when I said it wasn't. I told her I would wait while she went to the isle and checked it for herself. She did and in a huff and I was right. My Mom and I now mark on each package the price of each item we add to our carts. Less confusion, reminds us, helps the cashier (weather they believe or not :), and keeps track of the total easier, too :)

I know during the holidays you will get over charged more mostly by accident, the cashiers are tired and overworked, so I understand it happens, but it is a hassle :)

I'm like beeohio, and I know that I should not. The funny thing is that I double check every charge that comes thru on my boss' card and our business account.
