I always (without fail) check the receipt, usually sitting in my car in the parking lot. I think that most people would be surprised at how often mistakes are made.

Not as much as I should. I caught a double charge the other day, but only because I was trying to spend a specific amount to use a coupon and the total was higher than expected. I don't usually look at the prices in the grocery store or keep a tally so I probably wouldn't notice.

It also has to be a fairly significant amount for me to bother going back in, though that's dependent on whether I'm in the parking lot or at home when I notice.

I know I've been undercharged for things (though I will point it out if I notice at the time) so maybe it evens out!

Our grocery store allows those with shoppers club membership, to store their receipts on line. I check them sometimes.

Almost always when leaving a Whole Foods store. Because the total always seems to be 50 percent higher than I expected. I'm usually not disappointed with what I get there, it's just that their prices are higher than elsewhere. Sometimes the same products in other stores can be substantially cheaper. Oftentimes it's products from local producers that WF makes an effort to carry but they often charge much more than local stores do (that also make an effort to carry what's produced locally).

I rarely check when shopping at "regular" grocery or other stores.

Always, always. I watch the price as they ring it through, as well.
If the price is different in the till than on the shelf, they have a code of ethics where you either get the item for free (if under $10) or you get $10 off of the price.

I normally do self check out when grocery shopping, so as I am scanning I am also making sure the price is correct via the shelf or ad price. When a cashier checks me through, I always look at my receipt as I am leaving the store. Most mistakes I find are when the cashier inputs the wrong code for produce or bakery items.

The produce codes can be tricky for them, especially when there are varieties that are similar but different and with different prices. When I see them hesitate, I'll softly mention what it is.

Here's a question - when the wrong code is entered and the resulting price is TOO LOW, do you speak up in the same way one would as when it's too high?

I check EVERY time! I rarely get out of the store without stopping @ customer service. If it's a scan error, then I get the item FREE! I've gotton 5lbs of hamburger, salsa....you name it!

I was at a locally owned store 2 weeks ago and I hit the roof with them. They had advertised feta cheese for 2.49 per pound but the deli folks didn't know a thing about it and were charging $4.99. I had to show them the printed ad and it took 3 tries to get the right price. Whole chickens were on sale at .88 per pound but they packed them 2 to a bag. Fine for me, I wanted two but an older lady only wanted one. She had no freezer room for a second one. When she asked the meat man (I won't call him a butcher), he told her she had to buy two. Again I pulled out my ad and this time got a manager to give the women one bird. No, you did not have to buy two for that price. I did lodge a formal complaint with the store and now they want to play make up and give me all kinds of coupons. Sorry, too late, I am shopping elsewhere. Chicago has plenty of options.

Yes Snidley I do! In fact it happened recently when I was charged for bulk taffy instead of for dried mushrooms, a $3.50 difference in my favor. I saw it as it was being rung up and corrected the code. To do otherwise is stealing.

Yes, I almost always check the receipt on the way out but I try to watch the items being checked too. If my husband is with me it's easier to do because he puts the items up while I watch. Maybe because I'm watching them, I find few mistakes.

Not really. I do look to be sure I got the sale price on certain items. I guess I should look it over more carefully. One time I noticed that the checker was drinking a Cherry Coke and when I got home I found that he had charged me for it! Another time I was charged for 100 cantaloupes when I had bought one.

Self checkout is easier to see. I do watch the cashier but usually get distracted and miss things, so do a quick check of the receipt at home. If an error, I'll take it back on the next visit to be corrected. The store gave up offering the item free if the scan is more than the ad price. The additional senior discount day applies only to reg price items, not those on sale.

At Stop and Shop I use the wand. As I shop, I scan the item and see right there if it's correct. Sometimes things come off at the end. In that case I make sure by leaving it aside hand reviewing at checkout.

The fruit and veggies are the trickiest as some do not have stickers. You then have to look up the code or ask.

For the most part though, I am not checking every item. I remember yeas ago if you caught a mistake, you got the item for free.

I budget myself by amount spent weekly. Let's say my budget is $150.00. I stay within that range. If things are on sale great, but I don't skip on the cherries because they are not on sale this week. Life is too short!

A Whole Foods just opened and it is right across from my exit getting home from work. Sometimes I will run in for the convenience. But, I agree that the same items at Stop and Shop are so much cheaper, so I don't buy them there.
They have my Republic of Tea cheaper there than online, and have things I can't get like plain roasted sunflower seeds.
I have disappointed in the produce. I know it's organic and think it should taste better, but the bananas for example are practically tasteless.

No I don't check my receipts after because I look at the screen as each item is scanned. I typically don't buy a ton of groceries at once, I buy as I need things so it's small enough to keep an eye on the register. And around here I find I have to watch it like a hawk or I'd be overcharged for a couple of items each visit.

Yes, always. I can't say that I remember ever being charged less, but I have certainly been overcharged. It's a pain to have to stop at customer service, so I'd prefer a correct receipt.

Nope. I know how much everything costs. So I know what it should cost in the end. I sort of watch it as it goes through, so that may be the "same"? Pretty much, I get it within a dollar or two. Anything else would stand out. I think. I was really really under this week, and couldn't figure it out. Until I realized, it was tax free weekend (you get school supplies, clothes, and computers tax free once a year here). That affected the outcome.

One time I discovered that I had not been charged for a pair of pants that I bought along with a number of other things. This was at a large store that sold just about everything except groceries.

I made a trip back to the store and told the customer service people-brought the pants, too. They didn't seem to know what to do. I finally talked them into charging me but I wondered if they would rather I hadn't come back.

I was at Sears Saturday and was so happy to see they had the laundry detergent I use on a big sale, $11.99 instead of the regular $23. The register rang it at the regular price and I stopped her, said that is not correct it is on sale for $11.99. She asked where it was and marched over there and then came back said nothing and corrected it. I said well what price is it since she had said nothing and she said yes it was on sale.
I said it might be a good idea to correct that price in the computer so someone else does not have the same thing happen. Then we had to wait about 10 mins for someone to come approve the change in charge to me, they were all so busy joking with each other to come over and take care of a customer.

I do check the receipt at the store, and I check the receipt against my charge statement. I gave up watching items as they are rung up because they often ring up at full price, then the register computer adjusts for sale pricing before printing out the total.

Since Costco opened a store only a few minutes from our home, my totals at the chain stores have dropped dramatically. They probably don't miss me too much, as I seldom bought their high-profit items. (No deli counter, cosmetics, vitamins, sodas, chips, cut flowers, etc.)

Something yes, DH always checked them, and with him gone now I have to do it. I too have had trouble with Sears and their staff. In the appliance area, their is one gal is not nice at all. All she wants to do is wait on you, buy big and she cannot wait to get to someone else. Even her own coworkers don't like her.

I had the same difficulty as you senior gal. I tried to fix it at the register as she rang up only one shirt, not two, but we got so discombobulated, that she forgot to ring up the swim trunks. Even more effort, as I'd left the store! heavy sigh

Just tonight I bought salmon that was on sale, but the new guy at the fish counter didn't use the sale price on the fish. I didn't notice until I was unwrapping it to broil it.

For me, I try to use the self-scanning machines. Either at the register itself, or handheld ones that you can take with your cart and scan as you go through the store (the latter also helps me stay under a certain amount when I want "just a few more things" to help me redeem my gas points coupons!).

Fairly often, and if I find an undercharge, or too much change, I call it to their attention.

Several years ago, when the scanners came in rather than the sticker with the price on each item, there was a bunker with frozen fish on sale, with a placard showing the price per pound over the bunker. When I checked the price on the item, the amount per pound was different/higher.

I called it to an employee's attention, he said that the price on the placard was when it had been on sale, the day before. I told him that I should get the advertised price, he said that the sale price was no longer available, I insisted ... he ended up agreeing and so marked my package.

I walked around the store for ten minutes or a quarter hour, returned to the fish bunker ... and the sale price placard was still up. I asked for the store manager, called the situation to his attention and told him of my suspicion that there was duplicity afoot. That we used to have the price on each item that was going through the register, so could check.

As it is these days, we almost need to write down the price on the shelf for each item, to check with the receipt.

I don't often find errors on the receipt ... and I do find that the line item for sale goods usually lists the reg. price, then the amount of saving on the discount below it.

I wish I could say yes, & I do think it's a good idea, but I don't. I also rarely look @ the total as I blithely sign the credit card receipt. I would probably only notice if it was a big overcharge. We don't buy a huge amount @ a time. Now just today I spotted that the clerk did not charge me for something in the grocery, & I pointed it out so she could ring it up.

I do compare the cc receipts to the bill...haven't seen a mistake there in like...forever.

I do check my receipts, but I also prefer to shop where I can scan my own groceries. I like to bag them a certain way too. If I don't do that, and I buy a lot of items, I can almost guarantee that I will be charged for, but one or two won't make it home.

Walmart used to be very bad about having one price listed for produce and then charging considerably more. Like grapes that were 1.99 a pound would ring up 2.99. It really made me mad, especially when you consider how many pounds they sell in a day. They used to have a sign in their bathrooms that they would prosecute shop lifters. I complained multiple times about it to the managers and asked them....what is the difference? You stealing from the public. It hasn't happened in a long time, but I watch it very closely.

I really doubt that any large business would intentionally overcharge customers. I assume database price errors are inevitable when you consider the thousands of items for sale, the frequency of price changes, and the caliber of employees typically found in a retail operation that management must rely on to maintain correct price information.

WIth self check you may avoid checkout errors due to the laziness, inattentiveness, or lack of ability of a cashier. Pricing errors in the computer system will be there just the same.

I brought the receipt for the salmon back yesterday and received a refund for the price difference.

DH and I were in a Kohl's store last month and I spotted something I think is ingenious. They have little electronic screens throughout the store, instead of a card announcing the price. I'm guessing that clerks no longer have to tour the store on foot, changing the prices posted. It could be done from a keyboard.

I sort of check mine. I keep a running total in my head as I shop. I'm very good at coming within a couple bucks of my total. I'm usually over what the actual charge is.

I should check everything, everytime. I was charged too much for a watermelon one time at Walmart. When we took it back to the customer service, we were told if the cashier just scans the barcode instead of typing the actual numbers beneath the barcode, the regular price, not the sale price, comes up. What a load of crap!

I try to have all my things on the conveyor belt at any store before they start checking me out so I can watch each item.
