Any Disappointments today?

We got ours this early this morning. My DIL's parents cancelled on us at the last minute, they never told us why, we had so much food. Now we are all stuffed to the top. It sure made for a depressing day.

I decided to save time and buy frozen dinner roll dough.
The tenderloin steak was "resting" and I got the package of rolls out of the freezer...read the package to see what temp to set the oven, only to find out that it had to thaw for 1 1/2 hours.

No rolls at dinner this year.

But, you know what? no one seemed to miss them.

Of course, my disappointment was in not being able to go to family celebration at home of DD#6, due to the weather. It was a quiet evening, with local DD and her DH. We went to church, then came back here to ribs and homemade noodles,etc. It was very quiet, compared to our usual houseful of people. But I'm very glad we didn't venture out on the highway in this weather. I think the biggest disappointment was in not getting to see DGD and her new husband who just flew in today, and will have to get back o his post on Monday. Well, at least they got safely to the Metro area, and are celebrating with the family that can make it to the party.

Well, DGD just phoned and put me on the speaker phone, so I could hear them all and wish them a Merry Christmas, and now I want to cry.....but in a good way!

Polemonium caeruleum and polemonium pauciflorum did great at first, and then they started to gradually die off one at a time. There are only two plants left. One caeruleum that's knocking on death's door and a pauciflorum that's starting to look sickly. Of all the varieties of columbine (over 6) not a single one survived. Less than half the seeds sprouted and refused to grow more than an inch at most. I don't know what happened there. Peat pellets worked before. Will have to try again. Bells of Ireland did great at first but grew far too fast and started to fall over before they could be transplanted. They did bloom, but it wasn't anything of interest. Did manage to collect a few seeds. Carnations: all of them became leggy (in the sun) and the majority died. Dianthus "Sooty": a handful survived, but now random branches are starting to wither. Didn't bloom. Liatris: never germinated. Clematis: no germination. Dicentra: two varieties did not germinate. Gaillardia: all but two from two varieties bit the dust Asclepias: some varieties refused to germinate Blackberry Lily: not quite disappointing, but now I have far too many of these and no idea what to do with them! Poppies: several varieties. Never have any luck with these. They sprouted and that's that. Japanese Barberry: not a thing. Disappointing. Hosta: very disappointing. Germinated and then sat there- wouldn't grow at all... and then I forgot about them and they dried up.

Thanks, Ed. I do have Sandy soil, but the daylilies are not planted in that. (I never plant anything in it.) They are planted with a combination of two kinds of soil from 2 nurseries and some sandy soil for drainage, which was recommended by one nursery as a must for their soil. Because I did not want to overwater, I have shut off the sprinkler system and am turning it on 2ce a week to water. I will water this afternoon. Thanks so much for your suggestions. I don't think anything but cactus and natives could live in my soil.

Disappointed in SF Method. Any ideas??

I wouldn't initially fault the SF method unless you've successfully grown these plants before. There are a horde of potential causes for disappointing production, and of course the causes will vary by vegetable type and even variety! Melons - I've tried growing these several years using several different methods--straight in the garden and SF. I've always been disappointed and now don't even bother. If I do try it again, it will be in a heavily manured plot kept well watered. Tomatoes - Can you elaborate on the type of tomatoes you planted, how you supported them, and how they failed to thrive (didn't grow tall or not much fruit, etc.) Tomatoes usually aren't too picky, but they do want lots of sun and benefit from lots of organic matter. I also don't prefer Mel's method for tomatoes. Instead I plant them singly a few feet apart and support them with concrete reinforcing wire towers. The soil is predominantly clay but very fertile and heavily mulched. The tomato plants become 7' tall dense shrubs laden with tomatoes. Peppers - Success depends a lot on the variety you plant. My first year I grew "California Wonder" in zone 5 and was bitterly disappointed. I now grow North Star, Cubanelle, and Jimmy Nardelo and they produce well for me. Eggplants - Always a bit cantankerous. Radishes - What was wrong with the radishes? Usually when mine fail it was too hot for their optimal growth, or they were shaded too much by the other plants--they are so short! Spinach - The only two reasons I can think of for poor spinach production are (1) too hot--they like cool weather, or (2) maybe the seeds were a mite old or improperly stored? Spinach seeds don't live as long as the rest of the vegetables, except for the carrot/parsley family. Also, it's important to keep the area well watered for germination. Carrots - They're a pain to germinate because they take so long, and if you don't manage to keep them watered the seeds just die. Carrot seeds also have about the shortest "shelf life." If they germinate, I often have trouble because they're shaded by my taller plants. Beets - Not sure why these wouldn't work, except they don't like it too hot either. Did you thin them, knowing that each seed "hunk" is actually 4-5 seeds? I also get it trouble sometimes with them getting shaded. My beets did better in the cooler summers of Massachusetts than here in Nebraska. A lot of the plants you mentioned are heavy feeds, so adding manure or doing some cover cropping this winter could do wonders for you next year. I'm trying a couple winter gardens protected by cold frames this year.

thomasville furniture disappointing, any remorse?

I'm in the same boat. 2 1/2 years ago I purchased a leather sofa, two arm chairs, ottoman and two dressers from a Thomasville store in MA. The legs on one of the armchairs didn't match the other chairs and it had a different finish, AND there was a 1" "slice" (not all the way through, though) in the leather at the very top of the couch. The delivery men made a big ordeal of writing up the color, the finish mismatch, took pics, but forgot to take a pic of the slice in the leather couch. That evening when I opened my husband's dresser drawer to fill it with clothes, a 1/2 piece of veneer chipped off the front because there was a little nail sticking out below the drawer inside. So when we called to remind them about the slice in the leather we also told them about the chip in the dresser. They were planning to send a guy out to my living room with stain, and he was going to restain the chair legs right in my living room! I don't THINK so. So we sent it out again to be fixed and it was weeks. It came back okay - acceptable, not perfect. So we reminded them about the slice and the chip and they said we could touch up the chip with a marker can you believe that? And as for the slice they said we'd have to send the couch out to them again so they could reupholster it. How about bringing me a new one and taking this one away when I get my new one? So we never pursued it. We don't like to complain. We are blessed with what we have and I was starting to feel like a spoiled brat. But let me tell you this. We inherited the money we spent on good quality furniture. We thought it was smart to get something we could pass down to our children and we never had any money for fine furniture. I see that chip every day and it's in my face. And I just know one of my boys may very well pick at that slice in the leather. I wish I did squawk more because it would be done and over now and I'd have what I paid for. I feel ripped off. I will not do business with Thomasville again (although I do love those pilar fighting seat barstools!).

Only that my dad couldn't come due to the freezing rain. It made this holiday all the tougher as a transition year.

Today was pretty good but our daughter lapsed into her typical disrespectful behavior last night and ticked me off, again!! Really pretty minor, though, if you look at the big picture!

Ours was quiet, just the two of us today, Yesterday DS, Radio Dokktor and DGS, Willy came over ( we had a convienient break in the snow) and they brought their guitars, they played some beautiful Carols. We all spilled some tears sharing our memories of DDIL, known to most of you as Dirty fingetnails, who we lost in June. The first holodays after a loss is so hard. Oh, yes, and Dok made scallops Alfredo with seafood salad, I made my roasted cherry romatoes and we enjoyed a little wine. It was a sweet and sad day. I hope you-all had a peaceful Christmas, Dottie

As we celebrated last night, so the grandkids and great GK could get back safe today, it is quiet, and not most of the roads in ND are closed tonight, so I would rather have people stay home than take chances.

It was a really nice christmas day this year!
So quiet and peaceful.
No coping with storms, snow, ice, driveway.

It was a beatiful sunny day, bit of a wind, my dad and dog and I had a great walk in town.

I had a great meal by myself and just so full of love.

Its been the best day ever!

Yes, we had to change to Plan B because of the weather.

Plan A was for my family to meet here at 1:00 pm today for dinner, games including Dirty Santa, etc. It has rained and the roads are icy, so we changed to Plan B which is tomorrow at noon. The current forecast is for partly cloudy.

As a result I have had trouble remembering that today was Christmas! And since my DGD was bringing turkey, etc. I was planning on having leftovers for dinner this evening. Instead I had a PB and J sandwich. Bah Humbug!

Oh, well, such is life! Better to stay safe.

well i've given up on cooking w/ chestnuts unless they come in a jar from williams-sonoma lol. my one and only previous cooking disaster/disappointment came 20+ yrs ago when i convinced my mom to let me make a new stuffing recipe using fresh chestnuts. i had searched high & lo in chicago to find those fresh chestnuts but everything went bad when i had to microwave them then peel them. they kept exploding...ruined the stuffing lol.

this yr i easily found fresh chestnuts but after boiling them(no way i'd try the microwave lol), then peeling i found almost every one was moldy! i made the chestnut & sausage stuffing w/o chestnuts and it was actually very good lol. even my dh who does not eat or like stuffing liked it, even more than i did!

but i'm still giving up on chestnuts lol! other than that it was a wonderful day :-) ~ liz

Our day was too quiet. Saw my dad and his wife, and my brother yesterday. Freezing rain was predicted today, but didn't happen. I did laundry and DH cleaned up his home office space just a little (he would say a lot, LOL) We did have roasted chestnuts - only one was moldy.

I can't complain, because we leave tomorrow for a four day trip to Richmond and points south. I go back to work on Thursday.

I always check the My Page of a new poster to see where they are from. I see you are in Arlington. I lived there for many years (many years ago) and graduated from W-L High School.

Enjoy your trip to Richmond. Lived there at one time, too. :)

As stated by many above, we were disappointed because of the weather. Our grandson was at our house and we were having such a good time with him. We were to take him home on Christmas Eve and stay until mid day Christmas....because of the weather, we had to take him home Tuesday and cancel our travel plans on Christmas and Christmas Eve....I was a little depressed yesterday :o(

Don't you hate when the weather changes the plans at Christmas time? In our family we don't care when or where we have Christmas just so we are all together. The kids and grandkids all came Christmas eve and we went to all their homes yesterday to see what santa brought. Two long days but so much fun.. We are blessed...

I thought my knees were getting significantly better, but it must have been all the aspirin I was taking. They weren't so good when I woke up this morning, plus my wrists hurt, too. And I learned that the metallic (I would have said plastic) taste in my mouth could be a symptom of rheumatoid arthritis. So that was disappointing.

I received a new bathroom scale for Christmas, and I stepped on it this morning. That was disappointing, too. LOL

Ours were minor. There used to be a channel on TV that broadcast a roaring fire 9am-12pm Christmas morning. As a joke one year we turned it on, and it somehow got to be a tradition. (We don't have a fireplace in our house) My 5 year old was really looking forward to it. We turned on the channel but no fire :(

My niece and nephew are coming up from Alabama tomorrow and have only seen "real live" snow once. We got 2 feet last weekend, but after last night's downpour of rain and warmer weather most has washed away. I wanted them to get to see a little of it again!

My 5 year old got some cute fuzzy slippers and they are already falling apart after an hour of wearing!! ARGH!!

We had our first white Christmas that I can remember in Texas. It was really pretty but my husband had an accident driving home after dropping a friend at the airport. He slide on some ice and couldn't stop. Luckily he wasn't hurt but our van doesn't look so hot.

MY dissappointment was my arm/hand.Have been having trouble with it since before t'giving.My Dr.,doesn't know what is causing it.I at first thought i was getting lymphadema,but that has been ruled out.Dr thinks it may have something to do with the muscles and tendons,because of the amount of nodes removed.I thought maybe it was that also,but now i'm wondering if it could be side affects of the meds i'm on,2 of them say they can cause muscle.joint pain among other things.

Have an appt this wednesday with a physiotherapist again,so we'll see.In the meantime i can't use my right arm/hand for anything and it hurts.I can't even put the foot rest up on my recliner.Sad huh?? I know others have it a lot worse than i do,so i try not to dwell on my pains.
