Three men from the Forties (3 pics)

This is Howard, our neighbor and my parents' close friend, just before he was sent overseas to serve in World War II. I've been in touch with his son, my great playmate during childhood and now a lawyer in NYC, and I'll be sharing photos of his family with him. I'm happy to say that Howard came home safely from the war.

Interesting shot. Behind the smoke is my father's cousin Buddy.

This is my Aunt Elsa's husband, Ed, holding his newborn daughter, Barbara (whom some of you might remember from the Laundry Day photo).

isn't amazing how formally men dressed? it always makes me laugh to see men in suit and ties at the baseball games...

Thanks so much for your replies! That's just the strangest thing... They are definitely 3 separate little treelings. I think I will try to separate them and replant them in some gritty mix which I have slowly been gathering the supplies for... And I guess I'll have to come up with two more names for the other trees, too. Hopefully I don't kill them all. Thanks again, guys.

Hi marcia, thanks for the tip! I will watch out for that lychnis!!! I saw that in my parents' yard in BC and it was in a shaded and moist area, so it was tiny. Therefore, I dug it up and flew it back with me LOL. A year later, it's now this huge clump! My parents could not believe it LOL!!! I guess I may not believe it later either.... ROTFLOL! As for the Black Lace, please try it. It's so worth it! Even though we had such a rough winter this past year, it still came back from the base and is now over 3 feet tall. It's just a lovely thing. Donna, thank you! I actually have a Bugbane Chocoholic and is doing quite well. However, it has been "eaten alive" by that 3 feet tall Geranium Rozanne!!!!!!!!! LOL! That Geranium acts like it's on steroid or something and so I probably will need to move that poor Bugbane elsewhere next year so it will be more visible.... As for the Rodgersia, I am so happy to hear that it's hardy here! I actually saw that for the very first time just recently in the Botanical Garden in Newfoundland and I was very impressed by it. However, when I looked it up online, it was listed as a zone 5 plant. So I was disappointed. However, I am pleased to hear that it's really a hardy plant! Donna, do you have a photo of that please? I would love to see yours! Thanks so much.

Thanks everyone--yeah, I'm thinking the medium I used to start them in was a bad choice. I wanted to stay 'organic' so I used an organic soil-less mix but it sounds like everyone is frankly having better luck with miracle grow slow release fertilizer mix. I fed them a very weak organic fertilizer at one month and another weak miracle grow one last night. Now my pumpkins on the other hand...maybe I'll just become a full time squash gardener :) The temperature stays around 66 degrees but it hasn't been that warm consistently, (I'm in college and we're trying to save money on bills!)Hopefully they'll just self correct. Jersey, we are in OKC. Thanks for the encouragement, lilsophie! We've had lots of weather delays here, so we actually have not made a ton of visible progress. There has been some behind-the-scenes work on electrical, bond beam repaired and leveled, and we finally got our new tile (NPT Aquarius line Moorea Lapis Blue) and gray skimmer bodies set. Tomorrow should be coping pour, and if weather cooperates, Tues & Wed drainage lines added to take water away from retaining walls and house when we get tons of rain, deck pour on Thursday.

These are some *sharp* photos. Do you know what the camera was? The 'smoke' pix looks like a professional shot.

These photos look as good as the dynasty shots of the older movie stars!!

I love the "suit" look, and kind of miss it. Men are so handsome in suits, as are women in dresses. I don't wear dresses anymore, but I do remember the feeling when I did - love to get dressed up and wear pearls! A lot of the men in my workplace wear shorts and t-shirts now. Nothing wrong with that 'cause there's nothing like a guy in jeans. But the suit look makes me pretty nostalgic.

Chisue, my dad used professional cameras, though he was an amateur photographer. One was a Speed Graphic, which newspaper photographers used back then. Another was a Hasselblad. I don't remember the others. He used medium- and large-format cameras, mostly. They give so much more detail than 35mm. The negatives I'm scanning now are medium format.

He used to say there are two types of photographers--artists and equipment men. He said he was an equipment man.

I think there are more than two types of photographers. And I think he was a lot more than an equipment man.

I love looking at old photos. We brought some from my Dad home at Christmas. DH is going to scan them & clean them up in Photoshop & make copies for me. He works for a company that owns a printing company as a subsidiary & they have lots of cool equipment.
