What I did with my paintbrush this weekend (pics)

I don't have much skill in decorative painting, but I have enthusiasm! :-)

Here are some ornaments I painted. This year a friend of mine adopted a poodle who had lived her whole life in a cage producing litters for a puppy mill. Her new name is Boo.

I encouraged another friend to write a short story for Woman's World this year, and when it was accepted I decided she needed an ornament to commemorate the occasion.

And here's one of the ornaments I made for my late cousin Terry's grandsons.

I painted a couple of inexpensive wooden masks for two little girls in the family. When I took pictures of them just now, I saw a couple of rather serious mistakes. In this one, his whiskers are coming out of his nose. I've had multiple cats in this house for 30 years, and I didn't know that whiskers don't spring from a cat's nose??? LOL The recipient doesn't have a cat, so maybe she won't notice. Or maybe I can tell her purple cats have a different arrangement for their whiskers.

In this one, I neglected to put hair at the sides of her head. I assume that what the bumps on either side are for. This recipient does have a head, so I'm thinking she'll probably notice. This picture looks like the princess has blue nostrils (to go with her blue blood?), but actually they're grey.

And finally, this is what I did with two Styrofoam snowflakes from Dollar Tree (6/$1). I painted two of them like this (metallic gold in the middle, metallic silver on the outside, with gold dots), and my plan is to glue them together with wire sandwiched between, and create a tree topper. They weigh nothing . . . it was like painting air.

Susan, I think you are very good! You have great line skills - I wish I did. I am still working on this one. It is a tin piece I bought at a bazaar for 75 cents. The saddle club has an auction and I am taking this. Several of the people have sheep so I think they will like this one. I am also decorating an old iron for a friend. It might be done by Christmas.
The flash lightened this up a little. There is a quilt on the end of the barn - a nine patch design.
I think the background will be black or dark blue and I might letter it with "have you any wool?"

Nice work. Mine would look like a 1st grader did it. You have nice writing.

Yes everywhere I want to plant things will have to be fenced eventually. We plan to put a new shop there at the bottom and will fence an area for the plants. That 4 1/2 acres really looks huge from the top. Lucy if you go past the shop and start up the hill our property is right past the church on the right side of the road and goes all the way to the top where the houses up there are. I think the road is High Chapparel up there. Someone built a garden at the top edge of his land. He showed me the stakes where his property ends and I guess the people with the house thought they owned all the way to where the cliff drops off but they don't. There are massive boulders up there that are really beautiful but it would take a crane to move them, lol. I'll be satisfied with a walking trail and clearing around up there to sit and look over the valley. Brought home a nice holey rock to plant some small sedums or something in to place by the pond. The deer in the pic look fake but they aren't. They go right on peoples porches and in the garages if you leave the door open. The only thing I have found they don't bother much is mums and lantana. Its big dreams but maybe I'll win the lottery one day, lol. Right now its just nice to have it cleared enough to drive up there. Planted a bunch of wildflower seeds and going to take the bushhog up there and cut some of the tall grass so I can see them in the spring. I'd like to have the water tested in the spring. Its right across from the old pony express and stagecoach stop. Wouldn't it be cool if our town was named after the little cove with the copperas water on our property. It would be the closest source of water to that original settlement. Cat tails are growing in there right now but no other pretty plants. I'm itching to dig out a deeper pool, lol. If it will support them I would like to have fish in there someday.

Yeah, only 3 layers of floor... but they screwed the vinyl down (before tiling) with a long drywall screw every 3-4" or so. My knees are KILLING from trying to unwind them, and I'm only about 1/2 done. ...But... it does feel good to dig in finally! Hopefully by the end of next weekend the demo will be done. Exciting! As soon as I get all the permits in hand and materials ordered, I get to shift my focus to things like sink, faucet, granite, tile, and lighting. Fun!

Thank you everyone. Wish I could remember the other GWer who did something similar in a closet. That was where I got the idea from. The whole thing cost $35. The hooks were $5 each, and we already had the baskets and the paint. DH did the whole thing in one weekend. I am NOT handy like that. I just have the ideas, and he carries them out for me. In our last house we had plaster walls, and every time I hung a picture we ended up with a huge hole in the wall. He has banned me from all power tools- LOL Can't wait to show you all before and after pics of my whole first floor!

Lydia, I have a question for you. I have some plain windows that I haven't touched yet. I got them for $1 each. I love the way you did your window and I'm wondering if you think I could add some caming to them?? I've never actually looked at the caming in stores, but would that look strange? Or is there something else I could do to dress them up if I did something like yours. I just love the way you did that window. I think I saw it last year when you posted it. Or somehow I got to view it because I couldn't believe what a great job you did on it! I'm not that creative. :) Anyway, love your window project!

Kathy, you're a real painter! In my usual fashion, I've bought numerous books on decorative painting (and many bottles of paint!), but have yet to really get into it. I'm probably intimidated by my cousin Barbara's work. Like you, she really knows how to do it. But someday I'll try.

After reading the story of Boo - it breaks my heart. But,

Oh, Molly, my friend really did a good deed. Boo had never experienced a home, soft places to lie down, affection, or play. She didn't know what to do with any of it at first. But she's learning! I saw two photos of Boo, one taken when they first got her, and the other just recently (a few months later). What a difference in her expression and eyes!
