My First Before and After pics of a very SMALL weekend project

DH and I bought this home 3 years ago and it was a total fixer upper. I have never posted any pics on here, only because every project is STILL ongoing. It is all DIY, and with 3 kids and 2 full time jobs, finding time to get stuff done is really difficult.

Anyway, we had a built in book shelf right next to our back door. It ended up being a total mess of pictures and knick knacks, that were never in their place. And my kids were always putting toys and other things on it. There is a walk in closet only steps away from it and yet my DH and kids never ever hang their coats in it. The coats always ended up on the back of the dining room chairs. So I had the idea to turn the space into a "mini mud-room" after seeing another GWer turn a closet into one. I'm sorry I don't remember who- would love to thank them! Now the coats don't end up in the DR any more! I'm really happy with how this turned out.

Thank you so much docmom for basically holding my hand so far! lol i watered the seed trays in the greenhouse today :) there was condensation and some seemed dried out a little...and omg, i bought like 3 or 4 books on seed saving and seed planting different seeds. the one contains info on planting alot of different varieties and care on each plant and i keep it close with me when new seeds arrive!! I also can not wait to attempt to save more varieties this year and have much more to offer in fall if all goes right!! I've also informed several family members, if this all goes good, i might have extras to give away. also might do some flemarket or yarden sales in the future...I really love gardening and I'm so glad I am taking time to do a hobby that I love so much again! I would love to find a job in gardening in the future or just to sell a few plants at fleamarkets and stuff. The garden is fun but it's also more enjoyable when you have people ooo and ahhhh over your plants and are asking you questions or ideas. :) : ) :) Thank you so much! ~michael P.S. Hi and welcome! Gorgeous hoya you got there. It's called H. carnosa 'Krimson Princess'. Ok, let me try and answer the questions you had... "When should I repot it?" - You really don't need to repot it unless it's COMPLETELY rootbound (no soil left). Exotic Angel (the company where your hoya came from) uses a very peaty mix, so just make sure you let it dry out completely before watering. When I buy EA plants, the first thing I do is take the bottom saucer off...and I leave it off. This will allow it to dry out faster and allow more air to the roots. If you notice roots sticking out after removing the saucer, you'll need to repot. But in order to get blooms, you'll want to keep the hoya rootbound, so keep the pot as small as possible. "Should I put this outside or inside next to a window?" - If I lived in Florida I'd definitely keep it outside. Hoyas can happily live in temperatures much lower than 70 (depending on the hoya of course...and this is one that will do fine in that weather). You will have more chance of blooms if you keep it outside. But if you decide to keep it outside, just know that the sun may bleach out the leaves a little. "It says high light, morning direct sun should be okay?" - Yes, that should be fine. If you notice signs of sunburn just move it to a more shady spot. In the summer, I put a bunch of my hoyas, including the one you have, in direct morning sun...they do great. "Does it look like this plant is big/old enough to maybe flower this spring?" - That's not an easy prediction to make! Yes, it looks big enough to bloom, but it also depends on what conditions you have it in and on how stubborn it is! One thing you'll learn with hoyas is patience...getting blooms can take quite some time, so just enjoy the foliage until then. You'll know when it's close to blooming when you see a peduncle (the small stems that grow from the main stem...that's where the flowers will come from - and never cut those off, as it will continue to put out flowers from the same peduncles over and over again). "Is there something I need to do to keep this from staying variegated?" - This happens with mine as well, and I just leave it be. I guess if you don't want the all green coloring to take over (which is a possibility, although your's looks like most of the leaves are variegated), then cut off the green leaves. Thanks for the info dpowlan. We had actually planned to put the toilet under the sloped roof and put a small shelf behind the toilet; essentially bumping it out about 6-8 inches, and then put a curbed skylight above it to combat the lack of headroom. Our contractor (at the time) seemed to have no problem with that. We were also going to run our shower all the way back to the roof and put in a shelf and a bench. However when the plumber showed up he told us he was pretty sure that that was not to code. My contractor then called me and said that all the walls in the bathroom had to be at least 5 ft tall per code. Which meant building a wall out from the sloping roof and losing 12 sq ft. Soo our small bath just became much smaller. It is good to hear that the internal dimensions of your lovely shower are 36 x 45. Our "new" dimensions will be approx 42 x 34. I looked at your pics and stopped hyper-ventilating a bit and thought, "Ok that looks roomy and do-able, if we are somewhere close to that size-wise we may be ok" Anyway, thanks for the help. You give all of us small bath people hope!!

Hi Rhoda - thanks for coming by to take a look. I referred to your blog as I did this project and it was incredibly helpful. Keep up the good work! Hockeymom I'll take a picture of the edges and post it. You can kind of get an idea by looking at the picture above with the clamps. I glued the moulding on flush with the edge of the door. On one of the doors I think the moulding went a little over the edge because it rubbed a little against the door next to it when we rehung them. So my son sanded both edges a bit and I had to repaint, but it was fine. I did fill in the seam between the moulding and the original door. I used spackle pretty liberally, let it dry overnight, then sanded the next morning with an electric sander to get it smooth. I think Rhoda used caulk. Any place I missed got filled in pretty well with paint. It was a little easier to have the wallpaper go almost all the way to the edge of the door (that happened on the hall cabinet doors, but the laundry room doors were too wide for a single sheet to go entirely edge to edge). valinsv - I was a little nervous about using the mitre saw, but my son (he's 19) stepped right up and started cutting angles with no problem. I had him do a couple of trial cuts first just to be sure that the 45 degrees was exact (it was). The guy we bought the saw from showed me how to use it. Next project for my son's summer break from college: baseboards! Lynn I might have to go to Albuquerque in the next couple of weeks. I've seen the pictures you've posted of your beautiful house - I'd love to help, but you're so talented I'm sure you'll have no problem with this kind of project.

Looks great! You could probably add some additional baskets on top. Looks like you are in snow country, so you could use them to hold mittens, scarfs, hats, etc.

Yes Val, I intend on adding baskets on top. Just haven't had the chance to buy more. The baskets on the bottom are FILLED with gloves, hats, and scarves. And those are rain boots you see- not only was it a ridiculously snowy winter, but we got more rain this past weekend (in NJ) than we normally do in an entire month! The mud is unreal.

Wish I could remember the other GWer who did something similar in a closet. That was where I got the idea from.

The whole thing cost $35. The hooks were $5 each, and we already had the baskets and the paint. DH did the whole thing in one weekend. I am NOT handy like that. I just have the ideas, and he carries them out for me. In our last house we had plaster walls, and every time I hung a picture we ended up with a huge hole in the wall. He has banned me from all power tools- LOL

Can't wait to show you all before and after pics of my whole first floor!

What a great idea.. You could even do that with a bookshelf that is not built it, but it would have to be anchored to the wall.

Now you got my wheels turning-I need a place for the kids to hang their backpacks and jackets...

We did a similar thing (not sure if I'm the one you got the idea from) but our situation was an actual closet. My kids frequently throw their jackets and backpacks on the bottom shelf instead of using the hooks, but it's an improvement from the chair, floor, scattered areas that they had been using!

Looks like yours is in a perfect spot, too. Nice job!
