I thought you couldn't wear white until Easter. Maybe that is a "southern extension".

I don't worry much, I am so messy that I usually stick with dark colors anyway, lol.

It's always been no wearing white between Labor Day and Memorial Day here in my part of Ohio. But I wore winter white without anyone giving me 'looks'. lol

I've heard the old "no white after Labor Day" thing, but I never heard of the New Years connection. Frankly, it makes no sense! :-)

But then most things involving fashion make no sense to me. These days I don't have much white any time of the year because I work in a library, where I discovered that books are dirty!

Do people really follow that rule? What about all the white winter coats and white Christmas sweaters? I say wear what you want, not what "fashion" dictates.

We've always worn winter whites - sweaters, wools, silks, etc. No white shoes or accessories between Labor Day and Memorial Day, except for the long-gone white gloves. I also never heard of the New Years connection.

Nowadays, though, many women go bare-legged in high heeled sandals in winter in New York! I sure don't understand that, but take a look at any woman anchor's legs - not even nylons anymore. Lots of the teenagers at the High school also go barelegged in sandals all year long. It's so fashionable, you know. They look ridiculous shivering on the bus stop, with open coats and no hats in Wisconsin in winter. So, what the heck! Wear white if you want to!

I try not to wear white. Shows dirt, and if I am eating spaghetti, and I get sauce all over it. LOL

I never had any fashion sense.....but since I wore white uniforms most of my life, I generally stay away from white.
But I think white wool slacks and a red sweater or a green shirt look nice for a Christmas.
(Maybe it is because I live in California.)

I'm from Texas. As I said above, I kind of like it. It saves my white stuff until January. It's not like any kind of hardship or anything! I don't really care if people where white anymore, but when I was a kid we thought it was kind of tacky before New Years! Funny, huh?

I don't think of "winter white" and "white" as the same thing. Winter white is a nice creamy color. I probably do subconsciously follow the no white after Labor Day "rule", because actual white really doesn't seem to fit with fall and winter. But a nice winter white is, in my opinion, perfectly appropriate and not a part of the so called rule.

Bigbaby, I'm from Texas too and when I was a kid the "older generation" didn't wear white from labor day to Easter. On Easter everyone decked out in their spring pastels, white gloves, shoes & purses. The young people ignored the white rule and dressed in whatever the rest of the kids were wearing. Since then, I believe I saw a fashion talk show about this and the concensus is that that rule went out years ago and nobody pays attention to it anymore.

When I lived in San Francisco, no one who worked in the Financial District ever wore white shoes, no matter what the season. It's been 40 years since I worked in the Financial Dist. and I still can't bring myself to wear white shoes.

Another that doesn't wear white Labor Day to Memorial Day. White slacks, skirts, shoes, purses are all put away. I do wear winter white just not 'white'. I really don't wear much white even during the season, I'm not a size 8 or smaller....and my butt looks 3 times as big it if I wear white!!! LOL!!!!

I always thought it was no white from Labor Day to Easter. My Southern in-laws are sticklers about it.

When I lived in New Mexico, I noticed that people didn't really follow the rule. We had 300+ days of sunshine. It was only cold there for about two months. You could wear shorts most of the rest of the time.

I only heard a rule about white shoes, not to be worn between Labor Day and Memorial Day. I rarely wear white shoes at all.

I always understood it to be no white dress shoes, purses, or gloves from Labor Day until Easter. I still follow that rule.

Winter white is excluded, as it is 'winter' white.

What I never understood is why it's called "Winter" white when it's cream colored? Snow isn't a creamy color.

Shouldn't winter white be white like snow and white worn in the summer have that tan, creamy look? What am I missing here?

I've only heard the rule to not wear white as applying only to shoes and purses, and this does not apply to 'winter white' either - only true white.

My mother knew all the rules and we dressed according to them. Here are a few. No patent leather shoes, white shoes or sandals after labor day. Never wear black with navy or brown. Never wear a mix of metal jewelry. Shoes and bag must match. Never wear suede or leather in summer. Never wear black to weddings. Winter white is cream and usually wool. I have a few friends who still abide by these rules. I think they are outdated and silly.

White is such a cold "color". I don't wear it in the winter.

And, I have always put white shoes away after Labor Day, and don't wear them until Easter. Philadelphia thing, I guess.

Crazy - no fashion police have arrested me yet. I have
a pair of white jeans, and I wear them whenever I
want. LOL There are lots of winter white dress pants,
skirts, etc., for sale in the stores.

Just who made the "rules" so long ago that our society has felt obligated to follow? I grew up hearing the rules and never questioned that they were to be obeyed. Who in my early days would want to have fun poked at them? Now I dress just as I please.

By the term *RULES* I believe they mean "rule of thumb" not 'rules' as in a dictate.

A 'rule of thumb' is just an easy guide. It does not mean it will never look right. Shiny patent leather shoes at a festive New Year's Eve party will work. Thick, suede leather shoes on a hot humid summer day will never work. Sandals in December in Wisconsin is a 'No' but in Florida or Texas 'Maybe'.

I wear whatever color I want. I have seen some
gorgeous white winter outfits.

The last time I owned a pair of white shoes was 1986, and I only bought them because I was the maid of honor in a wedding where the bride wanted white shoes. I don't think I've owned a white purse since I was a child. I don't wear white pants or skirts because they accentuate your butt, and I don't need that.:)

So I follow the old rule, but only because I don't like wearing white.

I say,wear white anytime you like. My current favorite dressy outfit is a black wool wrap skirt with a white angora sweater. It's wintertime here!

Dark colours soak up more heat from the sunlight than does white. Even though we get less of it in winter, when we're outside in the cold, we northerners need to make the fullest use that we can of every bit of it that's available.

Now that the ice on the Arctic Ocean is breaking up in summer, it'll be soaking up more of the sun's heat than has the pretty well white ice in past years.
