I would if you still wear gloves.

Remembr how women used to be chained to fashion dictates??

gloves, minnie~

wow, I am old

And NO open-toe shoes after Labor Day, either!

My little church only has 30 members and our mission is to maintain a longterm homeless/rehab shelter for 25 men.

As a consequence our services are held in the chapel of the homeless shelter and many of the residents attend with us.

Understanding that most of the men have very little wardrobe, we don't mind if everyone shows up in a Tee shirt & jeans. Who knows, it might be their best Tee Shirt.

Personally, I believe the Lord would much sooner overlook your wardrobe as your absence,,,and who cares what other ppl think? Are we really attending services for the weekly fashion show or showing Love, Honor and Respect for the Lord?

A few years ago I would have said yes, those rules are gone, but lately I am feeling many of them are back and I too was wondering. For me, the determining factor would be the weather. We are having a hot spell that makes white feel very appropriate.

No white between Labor Day and Easter. :(

baaaaa baaaaaa

Yes you can, and to heck with the fashions.... wear what you feel like!

Moni, who does what she wants. :)

I agree with Moni 100%. Who says you have to live by the fabricated rules of some arcane society? Wear what you want! Also, there's such a color up in the North called "winter white", so you can say you're wearing your winter white.

As Fall approaches, I naturally gravitate towards darker, more earthy colors - those are my favorites anyway. Maybe it's conditioning all those years growing up with that "no white after Labor day rule", but then again I'm not normally a conformist so I guess I just like to wear the same Fall colors I'm beginning to see in nature right now?

Not only are the fashion "laws" relaxed these days, but when we get older, we have earned the right to do and wear what we please! LOL

When I first started working, I wore white gloves to work every day - that was back in the mid-60s!

If what you wear is guided by lore, then if most brides can 'wear white' you can wear white after Labor Day. LOL Please, I don't mean this as a comment about brides.....just about old wives tales. By the way, this old wife of 57 yrs today, I wore blue (we had an informal (cheap) wedding) but according to the lore...I could have worn white!! Glenda, my dear, wear what you are most comfortable wearing. In my opinion comfort over all, for me these days. Enjoy your day.

Lots of fashion ideas have changed. I was looking at some photos I took last year in Vatican City that I posted on Flickr. Most of the people in line for St. Peter's Cathedral were wearing jeans, jackets and running shoes. They were from all over the world. If you look at photos from 40years ago they were dressed up, women were wearing hats and heels.
If you go back 100 years they were wearing long skirts. Wear what is comfortable. I don't wear white as much because it seems to attract dirt. The minute I wear a white sweater or blouse I manage to spill some food on it.
I don't think anybody under 40 has even heard that its not fashionable to wear white after Labor Day. Who would tell them--Lady Ga Ga? Madonna? I don't know who said it in the first place.

Warning
Jenny Joseph

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick the flowers in other people's gardens
And learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausage at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I'm old, and start to wear purple.

I think she's trying to say we've earned the right to do whatever we want. As for white in September, I'm with arcy, if it's a beautiful warm summer day I feel comfortable wearing white. If it's a dreary coolish autumn day, I tend to wear darker colors. Do what makes you feel comfortable.

Just my thought.

You are going to a new church with a new friend.

What if you were the only person there wearing white?

Why risk being a "stand out?"

Wear something other than white.

Then come back and tell us if any one else wore white that day.

Sue

Uh......off white, cargo pockets, putty colored long shorts are "in" for men OR a white tank top or T-shirt for women..otherwise white is out! It's not in style at all right now.....for clothes.....for decorating your house....that's another thread. lol

Eh Glenda.....how many low cut jeans you wearing these days? Anything higher than your navel are granny pants!

I love you....wear whatever you want.....

I just got home from breakfast Kiwanis meeting and I wore my white capris. I wear what I want when I want. We don't have fashion police in Iowa.

OMG! What IF you were the only person wearing white! OhMy! The HORROR!

I Am wearing white :o)

Pants, light green striped knit shirt with my jade necklace and OPEN toed shoes!

It's on an elementary school campus, while they are building.

I am. September can get hot outside and white is comfortable. Besides....you can wear white blouses and no one notices. Considering some of today's fashions wearing white after Labor Day is nothing.

I am still wearing white pants and shorts. I go by temperature, not the calendar.

Glenda is my age and unfortunately we grew up in another time and we grew up southern where old customs don't fade away very easily. We are able to enjoy doing much of what we want but honestly when it comes to old customs and that sort of thing, many of us consider them basic rules.

I wouldn't wear the white slacks to church after Labor Day...everyone will be looking at her saying, "doesn't she know better" ...........

Well, I'll go with the white anyway. Material isn't the light weight kind.

Already made up my mind,

Nah, don't think so on: everyone will be looking at her saying, "doesn't she know better" ...........

The key words in Glenda's post were: NEW friend and NEW church.

We all have seen Glenda's pictures when she is on a cruise. We know she has lovely clothes.

Many churches, especially in the South, have unspoken "dress codes."

My reply was meant to consider the new friend and would she be embarrassed if her new friend showed up wearing something like those low cut jeans, and a blouse showing lots of cleavage!! Yes, that is quite exaggerated; just making a point.

Glenda asked the question, but she didn't mention that she was considering wearing pants. In some churches that would be a no-no, white or any other color.

Sue

Friend told me casual dress: capri's, pants, dresses.

Times changed from way back when I was younger.
Never heard of wearing pants to church. Now you see almost anything.

Now there are two kinds of services: contemporary and regular.

This church services are contemporary.

Now Glenda, you know you CAN still wear white, but MAY the fashion gurus approve?

Monica(who is wearing a medium weight, zippered sweatshirt today), 10 days into Sept - because I WANT to.

We're headed back to summer temps. High's in the upper 80's for next week. Sunday supposed to be 86.

No white between Labor and Memorial Day, blouses are not included. I still adhere to that rule, but we do wear open toed shoes and sandals, as long as they are not white!

Wear whatever you like. If you look good in white and have white shoes or hat or coat, wear them with pride. Those OLD rules are for OLD ladies, not me!
