How do you wrap gifts?

How do you wrap gifts at Christmas time, do you wrap as you buy them or wait til you are done or almost done shopping and then wrap?

I wrap when I am done shopping or almost done shopping.

Wish I was more organized and did it as I bought them. But I am so absent minded I'd forget what I bought!

Not that many gifts, this year. So I bought gift bags from Dollar Tree.

Used to: tradition was that everyone had to receive at least one gift wrapped with comics from the newspaper.

I usually wait till the end and then have a gift wrapping frenzy, this year, I have wrapped as I have bought. I don't know why I mixed it up...just wanted to get it done, I guess.

Growing up our Christmas tree was always colored lights and a hodge podge of ornaments usually with our names (sister and I) on them. We'd get ornaments every year. Since there was so much going on with the tree we pretty much used whatever wrapping papers we liked. There were always tons to pick from and honestly it all looked good. Now I decorate a small tree with my ornaments the same as when I was growing up and it still makes me smile. Very homey and reminds me of my childhood. BUT, the big tree we have (did our first one last year) since there were only a few ornament colors I picked wrapping paper to match because honestly it would've bugged me. This year we changed the blue ornaments to red so it's red, white, silver, cream and I bought different paper to coordinate. Years from now when we finally have kids I'm sure all this matchy, matchy perfection stuff might go out the window!

We're planning a closet -- typical hall closet size -- that'll have a lock instead of a doorknob; thus, it'll be accessible only to me and my husband. This closet'll have shelves top to bottom, and maybe basket type shelves on the inside of the door for bows, ribbons and so forth. The closet will serve a couple purposes: - gun safe - purchased-ahead gifts - gift wrap - a small amount of cash that we keep on hand As for buying ahead, I do pretty well with it. It's rare that I buy something that just sits around forever and ends up at Goodwill. When I wrap things, I just do basic wrap and use a sticky note to remind me what the item is. I add the bow at the last minute so that I can stack boxes without messing up th wrappers. I like the idea of putting your gift wrap items near the dining room. Practical and efficient.

I enjoyed the ideas. I give my kids,nieces & nephews money every year but like to make it fun. Can you tell me how the person baked the $$ in the bread idea? I am always looking for new ideas. Here are some I have used. The first year I orderd little snowmen ornaments from oriental trade catalogue. They were wooden and opened up and I hid the money in them, bought a cheap gift and wrapped the gift and used the ornament as a decoration to the gift wrapped box. I had to watch because they did not care about the ornament and threw them aside. I have one daughter in law who I have decided can smell $$$ and usually figures it out. In the past I have orderd plastic puzzle boxes but it is expensive. Also they did not have patience and hit the box with a hammer to get to their loot. I have used an old book and glued pages in back section together. Cut out a section dug like a hole and put money in. If you ever saw a hide-a- book, it is along that line. I also purchased the chineese take out boxes and filled them with fortune cookies. A special fortune cookie had $$$ in it. I have a pattern to make fabric fortune cookies(easy & Cheap) So I put the $$ in the fabric cookie you could use real ones but they break easy. Another take on this is to change the fortune to you will receive $$ in your future and wait to give it to them later in the day or in another time. I have used cd boxes nesting boxes picture frames, and balloons. I used stockings that I made for them and put $$ in it ,a double gift. Here was a favorite I ordered money machines-they were a small box with money printed all over and said money machine and a slit in the box and a tab that said pull. You taped the money together with removable tape roll it and put it in the box attache dto the tab & they pull the tab and money continues to come out. You could make them your self with any box or even use a kleenex box, cover it with play money write money machine yourself and do like above. They really liked this one. They assume by now it will be money every year. This year we bought a new house and have not sold the old one yet so they knew we were really tight on money and have heard that all year long so... I used a roll of indiviually wrapped toilet paper. Separated the roll 1/2 way in using a table knife and my fingers and folded the money and stuck it down in there. the card board roll inside bends but I straightned it back out fluffed the edges of TP. Put it back in its wrapper. I made up a poem about times are tough and we don't have much money so we wanted to get them something useful but funny. It went on about something that would last and they would remember how much we loved them all year through.(You are on your own there or e-mail me and I will send it). I have to admit this one really stumped them becasue at first they are looking around shaking the roll,turning it upside down and then got this look on their faces like I think they mean it and started thanking us for the gift and changing the subject real fast. I have to admit I had a funny look on my face and could not make eye contact. I can't lie very well. A few minutes went on and guess who figured it out?(money smeller girl)She was searching for it under the table so we would not see her just in case they weren't getting $$ I have anohter idea but some of my family live in differnt states sometimes thay are home and sometimes we ship gifts. I want to plan a scavenger hunt and wrap clue #1 then hide the clues #2 #3 #4 each wrapped of course until they find the final gift. I give them all the same amount so it won't matter what one they find or pick up. We also celebrate different days so that will help but will take some planning. 2009 I am going to use glycerine soap. I am going to the local craft store and buy supplies to make my own bars of soap around the money. I saw this idea in a catalogue but it was expensive and you did not get a guarantee on how much money was in them. I may make different shapes for different interests or not. I have 11 months to worry about that. I am always looking for new ideas so keep them coming. becca elf

I've made fabric gift bags that get reused every year. On the other hand Dave likes to take the leftover shreds of any old wrapping paper and wraps things with a million little pieces of paper. If the gift is small he sometimes does the wrap it with shreds. Puts it into another box (like cereal, any cardboard) and then wraps it like crazy again. Drives everyone nuts unwrapping it.

I wait till the end too. This year I used a lot of gift bags because I bought odd shaped/hard to wrap items like squirrel baffles, car mats, bags of jerky, round container of cd-r's... that kind of stuff... and YES, this is what people asked for! lol

I wait till the end and the tree is up. I separate everyone's gifts into stacks. I do keep a list of what is for whom. But then if I decide someone has too much or too little, I may move things around a bit. Then I wrap one person's gifts at a time.

I had one of those great ideas... then never followed through... was going to buy christmas theme fabric, and make various size bags.. look for closeout after Chrismas/
well sounded like a good idea... but never came to be..
seems life gets in the way...LOL

I used to do all my Christmas gifts in one day. Take a day off from work in December, generally early in the week. Get to the mall at nine, with a list, and buy all the gifts. Remember to save all receipts. Bring them home and wrap,wrap,wrap. Then bundle up any that need shipping and take them over to my local shipper. They are great, just bring the gifts and they take care of the rest.

I'd need to be sure to label them when wrapping ...

... or I'd forget what was in which!

(Actually, I figure that bags're best - one can, with care, reuse paper ... but to reuse bags, it's really much simpler.

Once the tree is up, I wrap as I buy. If tree isn't up, they go in the closet and will be wrapped later

I actually love to wrap Christas gifts, so I do most of them at once, with Christmas music playing and just a nice, happy feeling. Of course, the cats like to "help" ... which doesn't always turn out that way. But that's part of the fun, and they like it too.

I'm looking forward to doing it on Saturday.

Does this happen to anyone else? No matter how organized you are or how big your work surface, there's never enough room and you always lose the dang tape and scissors!

One year I bought a tape dispenser that fits on your wrist like a bracelet, that worked great. I wonder where it wandered off to? lol

I used to wait until I had everything purchased and did them all at once. The prettiest year we ever had I did all the wrappings in variations of green and silver. As I was boxing up gifts to mail, I remember thinking that those were the nicest ones I had ever done. Probably because of the 2 color theme.... I just know that was my best year, wrapping-wise. And I carried it over too, to the dining room, green tablecloth, white and silver china (my mom's set) silver deer candleholders and matching napkin rings. Man, it was pretty. Usually it's a mass of color around here, but that simple combo really worked. It kind of got lost though as people arrived on Christmas morning and stuffed all their colorful packages under the tree, but I enjoyed it up until then.

I usually do it all at once...I used to not put them under the tree until Dec 24th after the kids had gone to bed...but then they figured out who Santa was so now their under the tree after I get them wrapped...

Flames I put my silver tree with the color wheel up last night...Now I want to put some gifts under the tree so I'm gonna go looking for silver and gold plain paper...since its what I have my mind set on...I probably wont find it! Their just empty boxes but it looks pretty to have gifts under a tree!

I wait and wrap everything at the same time usually the first part of December, as everything then needs boxed for mailing to our family. The boxes get sent out early to avoid that postal rush, then my poor family has to look at all those presents until Christmas. LOL My granddaughters and daughter each get a new pair of pajamas to wear Christmas Eve, so that is the only present they can open early to get them washed and ready to wear.

Yes, I've become the gift-bag lady, too.....never really cared about wrapping. DD#5 used to love it, so I would let her do a lot of them.
