Have you made cake balls?

I haven't tried them yet but I would like to make some to take to our Church Christmas dinner. Is this a good idea or should I think of something else? We are going to a restaurant so I thought a tin of them would be nice to take as a quick dessert. Or.... do you have a better idea.

The original recipe using canned frosting is way too sweet. I can't gag them down, even to be polite.

I've had them made with a home-made cream cheese frosting,and those are much better.

I've never made them...they seem like a lot of work. They look good, though.

I did try this recipe. I would suggest cutting ground cloves by 1/4 tsp & I ran hot fruit mixture through the blender on puree in 3 small batches before adding pectin. I think it would make a great spread on pumpkin bread or a glaze on baked ham. I was talking with my aunt and a couple friends prior to making, and they all said to leave out pecans- maybe add after the fact when a jar is opened, so I did. The jam leans slightly toward the pineapple taste & I believe the pecans might bring it closer the 'carrot cake' taste. Next time I will toast & grind pecans and add them to the hot jam mixture just before I ladle into jars. The jam is very sweet, looks & spreads nicely.I will put it out with sourcream pumpkin bread dusted with powder sugar at Thanksgiving & see what kind of response it gets. ~Rashell Here is a link that might be useful: GardenWeb

Alexa- I did the same thing. The first time, I followed the box/can recipe. The second time I made them, I tried to glam them up, I guess, by making scratch cake/homemade frosting. Same crowd of eaters, basically. Honest-to-goodness, I think the box/can was a bigger hit!! LOL! Oh well! Given how labor intensive these are, relatively speaking, I guess the box/can saves some time! I love the fact that I can make hundreds of them when I make them and freeze what I don't use. I do love these things, though!!

Tried the mini donut maker, similar concept, but with no stick. We tried a regular cake mix and used less liquid than called for, almost like batter for thick pancakes. Worked well they were uniform in size when we used a large tablespoon to fill each cavity. Yesterday we tried a chewy brownie mix, and found it just a bit too thick and had to add a tablespoon of liquid. Came out well. Dipped them in cream cheese icing just as they were cooling off. Strange that they do not put any kind of instructions in the boxes from the manufacturer. It would help. Each time I have used it I only make a batch, in my case 7, and store the rest in a tupperware container in the fridge. Quick dessert or snack when you want one NOW. I wonder if you froze your pops for a few minutes maybe ten to fifteen, before adding sticks that they might grab on better, and would be easier to dip or put toppings on them? ps chocolate seems to burn fast so keep an eye on it when cooking in those little machines.

So interesting to hear about that area! I would love to go to Wales and as a matter of fact, to England. I have been to Scotland and Ireland, including the north, so I nearly made it. My great grandfather was a coal miner, so that makes perfect sense. He came to Pennsylvania to work in the mines. What an awful way to make a living. Had to google abseiling. We call it rappelling and I would not do it so I did not inherit the gene for that! Thanks for the insights. I wonder if my ancestors made Welsh cakes. Most of the rest of my family came from Germany in the 1700s, so the cooking was PA German, known as Deutsch or Dutch. The cakes do sound yummy.

I am also curious. I was thinking I might make a batch of cupcakes, which always disappear fast, but sneak out a couple cupcakes and frosting, as an experiment, to see if we'd like them! Those pretzel rings with hershey kiss and M&M are easy and seem to go over well.

they aren't a lot of work at all. as a matter of fact, you could use a boxed mix and canned frosting, if you aren't a from scratch baker.

when the cake comes out of the oven, crumble it and then using a hand mixer, mix it fine like. then add about 3/4 a cup of frosting. refrigerate it for a few hours and then using a melon baller, form your cake balls. you can frost them and decorate them at this point, or to take it to another level, once they are all frosted, then dip them in confectionary coating and let set. you can decorate these with additional icing or non-pareils or jimmies (sprinkles).

i think it would make a fine dessert to your church dinner, joann.

Take something else. The cake balls are horrible.

We had them at work, and 70% of the people hated them. God awful sweet.

Is the restaraunt OK with customers bringing in their own desserts?

I would think some wouldn't mind, but you might check first.

Still so many mixed feeling on these things. I want to try them but hate to mess up again. Last night I tried the buttermilk fudge someone posted and it was horrible, and burnt tasting. I may have did something wrong but I followed the directions & had 2 thermometers in the pot. I posted a cake ball site they look so good. If I do make them I will either make my own frosting or use much less.

Yes I made them once... never again! I thought they looked yummy, cute and fun to make. They were NOT yummy, no one liked them, too rich. Mine were NOT cute, just looked like big blobs of chocolate. And they certainly were NOT fun to make. Too much work when they didn't turn out pretty. I used a red velvet cake mix and canned icing. I dipped them in chocolate. I guess I just don't have the patience to make them pretty.

I would just make cupcakes and ice them. Looks like the consensus is they're not good. It would be a shame to go through all of that work and nobody likes what you made.

I vote for Oreo Balls....our pastor's wife brought some to the finger food get together last night....they are awesome! Here is a recipe,,,,but like her, I would use the paraffin wax to make the balls shiny and easier to dip!

OREO BALLS
Printed from COOKS.COM

1 pkg. Oreos
1 8-oz pkg. cream cheese
1 pkg. almond bark

Twist Oreos and take apart.
Scrape cream from cookies and put into large bowl. Add cream cheese to bowl and cream together.

Put remainder of cookies into a Ziploc and seal. Use a rolling pin to finely crush.

Add finely crushed cookies to the creamed mixture and stir.

Roll into 1-inch balls and chill.

Melt almond bark.

Dip cookie balls into almond bark and place on wax paper covered cookie sheet.

Let set and enjoy!

Makes about 3-4 dozen.

Can I be different? I'm not crazy about Oreo's, can I use a vanilla cookie and the cream cheese and maybe add a peppermint extract? Would that work?
