To save postage, our family will send postcards announcing the family reunion dates every year with no problem. I did the same thing last August when it was my turn to host, no one mentioned that they didn't get theirs.

It cost $.28 each, but I'm wondering if your homemade cards would weigh a smidgen more and thus require extra postage? I think the recipient has to pay the difference though if you just put on a $.28 stamp.

They have to be the right size to mail too. They have a certain size as a minimum that the post office will deliver.

I belong to postcrossing and have had about 335 postcards sent to me in the last 2 years. I have yet to have a postcard sent to me damaged. Keep the card average sized. You might want the post office to weigh your card, but I highly doubt it would go overweight, when you consider a regular household bill that can have 2 or 3 sheet of 8 x 11 paper and an envelope going through with regular postage.

I have had no problem with postcards... sent OR received.

I signed up over 2 years ago. You can send up to 5 cards to random people around the world. When they register your card after they recieve it, you can send more. The more you send and have registered, the more you can send. Okay, that makes no sense, but I'm up to being able to send 14 at a time now. You can't pick who you send to, nor who you receive from. It's completely random. I've recieved cards from countries I never knew existed, like the one island that only got the internet a year ago, that's in the South Pacific.

I hate sending to 'newbies' because a lot of people sign up, mail a few cards then never register the cards that weren't sent to them. Until my card is registered, I can't send another card. They 'expire' in 60 days. It's a fun way to meet new people and learn about other countries.

No trouble here. Once or twice a month I print business advertising 4 to a page on card stock, cut it, stamp it
and send it as a post card for 28 cents.

I send and receive post cards all the time. Never in an envelope.

But, those are souvenir cards from trips.

By embossed do you mean textured with something. I would think that could jam their sorting machines.

I do get them and I send 1800 of them every 6 weeks! LOL!!

Much of the junk mail I receive is postcards. My vet just sent a postcard as a reminder. A radio station used to send them in lieu of a letter to save money, which reminds me I need to suggest they do that again.

I'd call the post office and ask about embossed cards. I'd guess they'd go through OK.

I don't believe the line that they won't deliver them. Well, "cancel" that, I know there's occasions that they don't deliver mail from laziness and the like, but they're supposed to deliver it.

I still like how the Post Office in St. Paul, MN had to start having their paychecks delivered FedEx... they kept getting lost in the mail! Poetic justice?

My thoughts exctly! I've never had a problem,either, but I've never sent to this particular town.

By embossed, yes I mean textured, then layered. I didn't do it because I was afraid that the layers would get caught in the sorting machine, but was wondering, cause the sample I made really made my cards look much nicer.

Any of the hand made post cards that we send, we make sure meet the size and weight requirements, so that there isn't a problem. I can understand having to pay more for over/under size and for extra weight.

I will check today when I take the cards in to mail. All but the out of country cards are going as post cards.
