I like to make mine on whole grain bread, usually the 12 or 15 grain. I use 2 slices of the Kraft cheese slices and very thinly (paper thin) slices of onion.

When I was just a kid my Mom used to actually "Grill" the cheese in a frying pan, then spread it on bread. It was when I was in high school I found out how to really make it as a sandwich toasted together. Those were some special "Mom" sandwiches back then.

DH likes pepperoni on his, I can do with or without, but do like Velveeta, how it melts!

I had to give up eating cheese some years ago, but the ones I remember with great fondness were made on top of the stove in a sandwich press. The press sealed the edges. The bread was grilled, the cheese melted, and it was all so good!

I woke up from nap thinking about that apple grilled cheese sandwich.

Before I went vegan, I used to love brie on a fresh baguette with thinly sliced pears. Really good.

I like grilled Swiss cheese and bacon sandwiches.

I like mine with Kraft American and a slice of nice red ripe tomto.

I like mine with Kraft American, thinly, thinly sliced sweet onion and tomato. OK...throw some crisp bacon on too. :)

I like a dollop of pineapple preserves on top of the cheese, then grilled, with butter, in a black cast iron skillet.

My DD told me a couple days ago that she had a grilled cheese with apple. Don't remember where she said it was. She liked it.

You have to have good bread for a grilled cheese sandwich. My local grocery store deli has a parmesan bread that they will slice in store. Spread butter on outside, add sliced American cheese and put in hot pan until both sides are brown. Add sliced tomato. Yummy.

Sometimes I make them with Spam! I LOVE Spam.Slice the Spam about 1/2 in thick,throw it in a hot,non stick frying pan and brown on both sides.This is the secret to a delicious grilled Spam and cheese sandwich! Remove the Spam from the pan and wipe out the pan with a paper towel.Lavishly butter (use real butter,not that stuff that's half water)one side of 2 slices white bread.This is the only time I eat white bread.Put a little,or a lot of Miracle Whip(or mayo if you prefer)on one side of the bread.Place the Spam on that side of the bread,top with 2 slices Velveeta or American cheese and top with the other slice of bread.Put the sandwich in the skillet on med heat,brown until almost burned then flip and repeat.Slice in half,corner to corner and chow down! LOL Gotta go buy some Spam tomorrow! Other than this way I prefer just plain grilled cheese.Anything else is just not grilled cheese.JMHO

There are some great sounding sandwiches listed here and I just might have to try at least a couple variations. But, when I think of grilled cheese, I'm thinking Velveeta on white bread. That's what I grew up with :-) I like the butter to be carefully spread so that it covers every bit of the outside of the bread and toasted a nice golden brown. I do make grilled ham and cheese sandwiches sometimes but have never really considered those as a variation of a grilled cheese sandwich, but rather as a variation of a ham sandwich, or maybe even as an entirely separate kind of sandwich.

Mine is boring (but still pretty good), and kind of low fat. Well, lower fat.

I have one of those pump and spray bottles that you put olive oil in, pump it then spray it in the pan (like Pam).

So, first off I spray the skillet / pan with Olive oil.
THen when it's nice and hot I lay the first piece of bread (usually whole wheat) down in the pan.
Then I put grated cheese on the bread (light / low fat cheese usually a mozerlla + cheddar blend.
THen put the top of the bread on the cheese.
Lightly spray the top bread with olive oil.
Then flip it over to let the other side brown.

Really good, and evenly browned. You wouldn't know that it was low fat cheese and low in sat fat. And the olive oil makes it brown very nicely, and you probably use less than a teaspoon of olive oil for the whole sandwich. Probably a lot less than if you buttered the bread.

Grilled swiss cheese is amazing!

The one and only time I use ketchup is with grilled cheese.

After I butter the outside of the bread, before toasting, I sprinkle it with a little Cavendars seasoning. I also like mayo on my grilled cheese sandwich.

I love grilled cheese and also grilled cheese with good quality thin sliced ham. The new cusineart griddler I got makes them sooooo good and fast. I spray olive oil on the outside before putting in the griddler.

There used to be a little sandwich shop in Micanopy which is north of us. It's a tiny little town and all antique shops. Anyway a bunch of us went antiquing one day and ate at this place. I had a grilled ham, brie and apple (Granny Smith) sandwich. The bread was delicious, too. Large--like it'd been baked round. That was a memorable sandwich. We stopped by earlier in the fall and it isn't there anymore. Such a shame!
