Whole Foods 365 Stores

Following the very active Aldi thread (with a subtopic of comparison to Trader Joe's), I thought I'd ask how you all feel about the 365 stores? I saw my first one last week. I was visiting to work on projects with a non-cook (pantry has chocolate, flour and oil) and we went there for picnic items, so we could keep working instead of going out. It was as large as one of the newer Trader Joe's, with little high shelving. Most of the floor space was open from waist up. There were a few taller aisles of pantry staples. I didn't inspect too closely, but I think it was mostly 365 (house) brand. I was getting a jar of mayonnaise (their's is pretty good) and they did have a few versions, though all 365.

Besides the main floor, there was a whole section mostly enclosed for fresh produce which was a big walk-in refrigerator. Of many of the selections, there were only half a dozen pieces each, in small baskets, but there was a good variety. Outside of this area, they had roots and bulk bins, and the bulk had sort of the greatest hits. It was nice to be able to buy just a bit of rolled oats and mixed nuts, rather whole packages, and they were nice and fresh. There was also an "Asian" fast casual restaurant (I think) and a coffee cafe (redundant but I don't know what else to call them because "coffee shop" here traditionally means a casual restaurant with short order as well as standard dishes.) These both were in wings partially separated from the main floor space.

I didn't look at the meat offerings. There was a sandwich counter which was closed (probably wrong time of evening).

As one would expect, there was a wide variety of ice cream--more flavors per brand than at my local full sized Whole Foods There was plenty of yoghurt in cups but not much selection by quarts. Again, as one would expect. Good sized bread/bakery shelves.

I ended up with some premade salads, though one tasted off and got thrown away, the mayo, some pretzel rolls, a really nice little ripe cheese from Vermont Creamery (labelled made for Whole Foods), a packet of Applegate sandwich turkey (also with made for Whole Foods on the label, but exactly the same as one can buy at Trader Joe's), an avocado, a couple different plain yoghurts, orange juice (365, which I also buy at Whole Foods), the oats and nuts, and a bunch of bananas. Oh, and Three Twins cardamom ice cream. It's good. Three Twins is good. But while I love cardamom, it's not a great flavor for ice cream. It might be better with peaches, for instance, but it's the wrong time of year, so it would have been better with peaches in it

I was really pleased. It's not a store for heavy duty cooking, but I found plenty for grab and go breakfasts, lunches and snacks for several days.
