The Kitchen Table

I woke up to a broken furnace.

15 years ago

It is the igniter switch thingy. It happened 8 or 9 years ago and had to be replaced then. At that time DH was in Asia and I had to wait 3 days to get it fixed when he came home. I remember keeping the fire going in the fireplace around the clock to keep the place at about 66 deg. I called him and he came home right away, pulled out the part and call the repair place. It will cost $40 just for that tiny part, but cheaper then a new furnace. He told work that it might take all day to fix and to take a flying leap. We need heat and all the parts places are closed over the weekend. So I guess I owe him a public apology and "Dog House" free card. He is always there to fix things when he can. Also for my birthday he surprised me and bought me flowers and a box of chocolates. Just what I need!

Even my wife wouldn't mind a case of Duraflame Logs as a Christmas gift in your situation. I'd rather be in a warm doghouse than a cold penthouse!

I had that same part go out on my furnace twice. And it's only 8 years old. First time was about 4 years ago, then again last winter. And, of course on one of the most coldest days of the year. I have the maintanice plan, so it is a little cheaper to fix than if I didn't.

This is so awful.... I was working at that time, I do homecare nursing, 10P-6A last night, and this case has two siblings with a genetic syndrome, so there are two nurses. My co-worker weighs nearly 400 lbs, and we work in conjoined rooms in a 100+ year old farmhouse, even an average-sized adult produces a fair amount of vibration/shaking when they're moving about... Lots of people up here felt the shaking, more than one person i talked to was sitting in a parked car, and thought someone was messing with them , bouncing the car...but me, i'm so used to being bounced around when i work with this gal, it didn't even register. I had the morning news on, so i heard about it immediately, said, 'Hey, Charlene, did you know we just had a earthquake?' She's pretty used to being an environmental mover and shaker, too...she didn't notice either!

Gotta love cougars in training : D. I have visions of a soft drink commercial running through my head, Gil. Anybody watching "Age of Love"? Sharon, did you not get any of the rain on Monday night? We had a lot of it with a really ugly looking storm. From about 10 PM to 2 or 3 AM. Green - yes, green clouds formed and they were swirling in every direction. It blew our barbecue off the deck! And it's a pretty big barbecue. Fortunately, not too much damage and we didn't get the hail. Even more fortunate is that it wasn't a tornado. Edmontonians still watch those skies pretty warily - 20 years later. Even after the rain, though, our lawn still feels a bit dry and crunchy so it wasn't enough rain. I actually had to put a fleece on tonight for a bit while I was outside. I just got a bit chilled. But it is a big relief from that hot, hot, humid stuff we've had over the past week. I think I can appreciate the heat just a bit better now that we've had some of this cooler air descend upon us. Shauna

Hey Baldloonie!! Thanks for the opinion. Not sure if the thermostat is a 2 stage by looking at the manual. I can tell you it is a Honeywell FocusPro TH6000 series (TH6110D) Daddo, thanks for the advice as well. A tax credit will reduce the amount of tax you actually owe dollar for dollar. A tax deduction will decrease your taxable income. Since it is a $300 tax credit you get all $300 as a benefit. Basically...If you are getting a refund it will be $300 greater....If you owe the IRS...you'll owe them $300 less.

I always advise people to keep an extra igniter (gas) or ignition transformer (oil) on hand.

They're relatively simple to swap out, relative cheap, and, if you swap the part out and the system works, you've just saved yourself a bunch of money.

What timing, Clare! They keep telling us it's going to get soooo cold this weekend, so I'm very glad to hear your dh will be able to fix it. The flowers are beautiful and I'm sure the chocolates are delish. I myself have a serious (dark) chocolate problem and eat it pretty much every day. Belated Happy Birthday!
