What do you serve for your holiday breakfast and lunch?

We have Christmas dinner about 7pm on Christmas Day. So I always struggle for breakfast and lunch too. I used to make a quiche for a brunch with fruit, and then serve cold cuts and cheeses, crackers and fruit for mid afternoon lunch.

This year we will try freshly baked coffee cake, Danish made with canned crescent roll, fresh fruit and coffee. Lunch will be the quiche Lorraine. I make it with Swiss cheese and bacon.

We have no Christmas eve traditional meal, so this year it will be roast chicken and veggies with fresh black berries over ice cream topped with chambord (black raspberry liqueur). If I ever find time to bake some cookies, I will add them to the dessert selection too. Younger DS loves spritz cookies.

But I find I am stumped for alternatives. What do you serve as meals before or after your holiday meal?

Usually sausage links and scrambled eggs, with orange juice and coffee for breakfast - around 10 AM.

I serve the Holiday meal sometime between 3 and 4, with hot and cold appetizers set out maybe an hour before.....so, no need for lunch.

I used to do the big Christmas Breakfast thing--but it really got to be too much. This year, we're going to DD's for breakfast, and will be having bagels and baked apples.

Christmas Eve is the one night of the year that my husband cooks dinner. That means we're limited to either pita pizzas or hot turkey sandwiches. This year it's the hot turkey--he'll be accompanying it with Stove Top, and Tater Tots. Hey, it's okay with me to have a night off in the kitchen.

Our Christmas dinner, at my sister's will be around 2 o'clock. Generally, there's no need to worry about supper on Christmas--everyone's usually too gorged to have another meal. And the next day we'll be going to a wedding anyway.

I use microwave ovens a lot but unless you have several large ones, they would take too long to heat food for a crowd. For regular ovens that can hold a low temperature, fully-cooked foods can be kept for hours at 170. Moist foods will hold even longer than dry ones -- just cover them to prevent drying out. But figure an hour or longer to warm it up from refrigerator temperature (depends on how big/solid the pieces -- surface-to-volume ratio and density to the scientifically trained). Remember, you are not trying to recook the food, but warm up the interior without hurting the exterior, so while higher temperatures will heat faster, they'll also recook the foods. If your oven can't hold a low temp, or if the food will be out for serving for a long time, consider a warming device like a Salton hot tray. Food safety is about keeping foods hot (or cold) -- what you don't want is perishable food sitting out at room temperature. Most home-cooked foods are not heated for the long time period or elevated temperatures required to sterilize them, so it's safest to keep them hot or cold. And don't knock cold foods -- I happen to love cold chicken and sliced brisket (but with ketchup or another cold sauce rather than gravy) on a hot day. (Okay, the potato kugel would probably be better hot.) If the chicken (or any other food) is in a flavorful sauce and isn't supposed to be crisp, make it at least a day ahead for best flavor. For stew-like dishes, no reason not to make them as much as two or three days ahead, but the longer they'll sit, the lighter the hand with seasoning. The way I handle after-services meals is to have appetizers ready-to-go in the fridge. That way guests can get comfortable while we serve drinks and wait for everyone to arrive. I serve mainly vegetable salads and pickled vegetables since they are on just about everyone's diet but don't spoil the dinner. If people are likely to be very hungry or dinner will be delayed, gefilte fish, herring salad, deviled eggs or some kind of egg spread are satisfying but light first courses for meat meals. Cold soups are nice, but I reserve any that can't be sipped from a cup without the help of a spoon for served seated dinners. As far as menu suggestions go, our guests really enjoy guacamole -- a family tradition since DH is from Texas, but "good eats" to almost everyone.

I will be having the family at my home this year. My three kids and their families alternate with us and their in-laws for the major holidays. The kids all like to be here at the same time, so it is the 3 of them, their spouses, 4 grandchildren, my Mom and Dad (they live an hour and a half away), two of my Aunts, two cousins, and my cousin's daughter, and her husband and son. And my BIL. In all that's 22. I will have to do this buffet style, and set up tables in the living room. I'm sure it will be chaotic, especially since my one son and DIL will be staying with us with the two babies. And then my parents will stay over too. Wish my house was a little bit (or a lot) bigger. But we will make due. I'm just grateful that we can all be together.

I just tried a simmering potpourri for the first time and it made the whole house smell so Christmas-y! I had fresh peel from my breakfast orange, so I put it in a saucepan w/ water, a couple of broken up cinnamon sticks and a spoonful of whole cloves & put it on the stove over low heat. It's still going right now & I'll definitely do it again. I also get the free trimmings from HD and arrange them around the house, since our tree is vintage aluminum. They don't sell balsam, though & that's the most fragrant, IMO.

Happy to hear your lunch was a hit. It sounds delicious. My grandmother used to make apricot squares and used a scallop edged tool for the lattice...so pretty. My aunt gifted me a scallop edge cutter, but I have never been successful with the dough and it always ends up undercooked on the bottom, but then again I’m not much of a baker. Speaking of which....I did try your bread. I found it did not come together with the 1 1/2 cups hot water, I needed to add more. Also, I cooked it in a Calphalon pot since I don’t have a dutch oven. Well, it was a total bust. Took an hour to get it browned on the outside and it never cooked on the inside. I realize now I did not let the oven preheat long enough snd maybe it’s the pot? Maybe my flour was old? I followed all instructions to the letter. I am going to try it again with fresh flour, but you don’t find you need to add more water? Thanks for any suggestions.

Being as there will be no one here Christmas day, I'm taking to my friend's for their family brunch, scotch eggs.

She's serving, well, her DH is preparing waffles and to go with that canadian bacon, bacon and sausage. My scotch eggs, and her kids are bringing or will be preparing brunch there.

Beforehand we'll have mimosa's as a starter.

No special breakfast here and there is no lunch. We have dinner at 12:30 or 1:00. For supper if we want anything, there will only be the two of us then, we eat leftovers. Having, turkey and ham and all the trimmings.

We're having brunch around 11 and after that it's whatever until dinner. Brunch will be OJ, ham, cheese scrambled egges and biscuits. That oughta' tide him over for a while. ;-)

I cook for DH, myself and the kids. I always make monkey bread in the morning. Kids can open stocking while it bakes. I sprinkle powdered sugar on it and call it snow. Pot roast is our tradition for Christmas dinner, which will be served mid-day, neither lunch nor dinner, around 2:00. In between I put out munchies- crackers, cheeseball, cheese cubes, deviled eggs, grapes, pepperoni... We open under-the-tree gifts while the roast cooks. If they get hungry in the evening, we pull the leftovers out. We end up playing a lot of games and watching some movies, so the rest of the day after the meal is laid back. I like having all the work behind me by then, relax the rest of the day.

I do not have a traditional Christmas Eve meal. Depends on how busy I still am, sometimes it's pizza! ;o) I'm OK this year, so I plan to put a pork roast (actually almost 4 lbs worth) in the crock pot tonight, let it cook all night, shred it up tomorrow dinner. Between that and Christmas day leftovers, we'll eat Sat and Sun, too.

That's my plan. I really do not enjoy all this cooking. If I didn't think it would disappoint DH and kids, I would not do it. I'd find someplace that serves dinner Christmas day and go out! Oh, that would be so much nicer! Make a reservation, we'd all dress up and go out together, no cooking, no clean up. I resent the work, the time it takes to do it compared to the time it takes to consume it... Not worth it. I feel unappreciated.

we're alone christmas breakfast/lunch...so will eat whatever is in the house (i have cinnamon rolls and bacon) light lunch..soup? dinner is big affair at dd2's home we'll meet at 3 with entire family. ham, and pot luck sides are the menu. i'm making bite sized pecan pie-like dessert with purchased cheescake bites and something else. i'm also making dh's fave corn cassarole. dd2 is making cheesey potatoes, 1dil kid friendly mac and cheese (we have 7 grands), 2dil a salad. dd1 is bringing pre dinner dips..no lack of food, lol...

We don't expect anybody here until after 3pm. So, since I love breakfast, it will probably be eggs and rolls of some sort.
I told DH that he has the run of the kitchen for the entire meal for Christmas Eve when every one will be over.
I am not going to even enter the kitchen. And this will be hard for me to do! He is a good cook, and he would rather be the dinnertime hero. Sweet~

No kids here this Christmas, so we are on our own. Today we will go to a movie and then out to dinner. This is a tradition we started when our girls were little. We have also been invited to an open house today and tomorrow, so may enjoy being with some friends and neighbors also. I may not have to cook anything, but I am going to make an apple pie this morning that we can enjoy.

I'll make Monkey Bread and Breakfast Casserole tonight...get up in the morning and put both in the oven...sometimes it's ready before we open gifts or during...we'll munch on that and then have Christmas Honey Baked Ham around 3 or 4...I usually make a Christmas Eve Dinner and then we just eat leftovers Christmas Day but my youngest DS has to work till 7 so we've changed our plans to tomorrow!
