My mom is gone

Her turn around last weekend was very short-lived. She started going downhill again right away. She had a stroke around Thursday (Wednesday was the last she talked). They moved her to hospice on Saturday and today she passed away.

My mom passed away on November 30th...

Instead of intubating my mother on Thursday, we asked the doctors to give her something to at a least help her calm down...they administered a morphine drip...she passed away on Friday morning at 11:30 am. (throughout my mother's numerous hospitalizations, I called the hospital nurses' station to ask about her progress because I was normally caring for her at home; my body clock automatically had me up at specific hours throughtout the night because i would be checking on my mom's oxygen levels, or making sure that she ate to prevent nausea.

Feeling a little better today, Monday. I've spoken with my siblings and they understand I can't come for a visit right now, my husband is in a Rehab Hospital himself due to an exacerbation of Mulktiple Sclerosis. My brother is the Executor of the Estate. My two sisters have volunteered to help with the sorting of her belongings. I wrote my brother Bill "Billy" a long letter, thanking him for taking care of Mom for the last years since Dad died , for visiting her every day when she was hospitalized, for getting her hospice at home, and told him I will not challenge the will. I trust him, we were best pals growing up, and I know he'll do right for all of us. Mom wanted no wake or funeral; we will spread her ashes when the summer comes. Thank you for all your responses. kath, I bet that since your Mom was teaching you when you were a child, the fundamentals are somewhere in your brain still. That would make it easier to pick it up again. It's harder as an adult to learn a new language if you've never studied a foreign language at all. Why not give it a try? I studied four languages when I was in school, but the one that really stuck is Spanish-- and I think that is because when I was about 9 and 10, my best playmate was a little girl my age from Ecuador. The Spanish we spoke to one another was "playground" Spanish-- in other words, the sort of thing kids use just playing, kid's syntax and colloquilisms. But then when I studied Spanish as an adult, it proved to be be a sound foundation to build on. I haven't tried cds yet, but know people who've used them to pick up basics or refresh a language they'd studied in high school before going overseas on business. I am saddened to read this news Paula. My condolences to all of your family, her friends.

Years ago when my Dad passed away I found at family gatherings he was always with us. We all have something of our parents in spirit and character. My friend lost her mother last year and she finds her Mom sending her signs when she needs them - sometimes in songs on the radio (when she wishes she could talk to her mom). Sometimes my friend will notice something while passing - an object that relates to her mom.

My heart goes out to you.

I'm sorry to learn of your mother's death, and for all the ups and downs. When death comes it's hard to believe that it is over.

My own mother died a prolonged death from leukemia. It was a relief when she finally passed away, but still oh, so *final*.

It will probably be very hard for quite a while, but...time DOES heal. One day you will be able to think of your mother with only love -- no sorrow.
