Books to read on trip..........

I need some recommendations for books for me to read while on our whirlwind pre Christmas trip to MS.

I would like to get books on tape-nothing too graphic-sexually or murderous-DD will be in the car with us and while she will be listening to her own headphones she may still hear things...

too many questions...

But I am open to other things too.

I am posting at the library since I am on Christmas break from college right now and that is how I check in everyday.So give me some ideas and I will check back on this Monday.

Types I like:(But am open to suggestions)

I like mystery type things I have read all the Sue Grafton books up to what "T"? Even though S is for silence did not make much sense to me-I couldn't get into the back and forth type storylines....

Janet Evanovich(sp) is not for me.

John Grisham type books are good.

Lilian Jackson Braun "Cat" books are good for all ages. I have listened to a few of them and read the rest. They are light mysteries.

James Patterson books are great. Also, David Baldacci, Brad Meltzer, Stuart Woods, J.A. Jance, John J. Nance, Robin Cook.

If you like CSI-type books, Kathy Reichs is great. Also Patricia Cornwell (her early books are better than the recent ones).

In case anyone missed the PBS special The Botany of Desire which premiered Wednesday, October 28, 2009, you can still watch the entire program online. It's incredible. Book turned documentary. I seem to be doing my Hallowe'en reading early this year, having this month finished two rather large books, both dealing with supernatural themes. I absolutely lovedThe Little Stranger by Sarah Waters, and recommend it to anyone interested in "haunted house" stories. The book also paints a very interesting picture of how life in rural England changed after World War II. A few days ago I finished Peter Straub's sprawling (and quite gruesome) Floating Dragon. I am sorry to report I found it a bit disappointing, especially compared to his earlier novel Ghost Story, which is one of my favorite scary books. I prefer quiet, unnerving scares to gore. Also, the two books were very similar in their themes, which makes a comparison of the two inevitable. Hopefully my next reading choice will be a bit more suitable for summer. The brutal heat has settled on us, unfortunately. I am being a stubborn goat and not turning on my air conditioner until June.

i finish most books that i start, but i have no trouble stopping one if i really don't like it!! it is interesting how some books really appeal to some people and not at all to others! one of my fav books is crime and punishment- probably only because i took a class in college that analyzed it in depth and reading it that way was really amazing!! i loved it and read it a couple of times-- but, i'm sure that i would have put that book down if i had just picked it up and started to read it...

John Lescroart's Dismas Hardy series is about a San Francisco do-good lawyer and his police detective best pal. "Dead Irish" is the first book.

Elizabeth George is the American author of a series of mysteries set in Great Britain. The first book in the Inspector Linley series is "A Great Deliverance". He is a handsome, upper crust Scotland Yard inspector, his partner is a frumpy woman from the working class. Very entertaining.

William Bernhardt's Ben Kincaid books are about a bumbling lawyer whose oddball staffers have to keep him from getting himself killed. I don't remember which title came first - but it's not really a series. All the books stand alone. Funny, but not as slapstick as the Evanovich books.

I don't know if they are available on tape...but I am currently hooked on a very long series of books (you can read them in any order) that all start with "The Cat Who... They are written by Lilian Jackson Braun. Sounds like you enjoy the same stuff as I do, so I'd highly recommend them. They are a bit fluffier (less serious) than Sue Grafton's books and would be great listening/reading for anyone.

I'm presently listening to Lisa Scottoline's Daddy's Girl and enjoying it. It's a mystery, and the protagonist is a law professor (female). The narrator is one of my favorites.
