Comments (48)I've just finished reading Barbara Walter's autobiography, "Audition". I've always been a huge lover of good biographies and autobiographies and have read too many to count over the years. But, I have to say that this one by Barbara Walters is by far the best, most interesting one I have ever read . . . hands down! It's an easy read with many , many great photos. Long, although it was so interesting that I wished it had gone on for another 100 pages. She has met , interviewed and befriended some of the world's most fascinating people and, after finishing her book, I'm convinced that she's the most fascinating person of all of them. I totally loved this book! Lynn...See MoreIn-flight reading?
Comments (34)cindy grelobe, I love David Lodge, esp Changing Places, Small World, and Falling Down. He's quite a joy to read (tho I think his more recent books haven't been as good) So do I. To your list IÂd add a book of short stories , I donÂt remember the title because IÂve got it in Italian and every time IÂm at home I keep forgetting to check out the original one. Besides IÂve got another book written by David Lodge, titled Ginger yourÂre Barmy, it is the first book that D.Lodge has written and was published in 1963, I seem to remember,(at the moment it is out of print) and it is about two blokes serving in the army in the 50Âs . I think it is also a bit autobiographical. But IÂve never read it yet, because when I got it I wasnÂt able to read in English and the book hasnÂt never been translated in Italian. IÂm going to take it with me on my mountain holiday next August. grelobe...See MoreAdvise for California trip, please
Comments (27)Lived there for many wonderful years. Here in no particular order are some highlights that I don't think visitors should miss: Outside the City (SF): MUIR WOODS- a redwood grove north, over the GG bridge, which includes a beautiful drive there. Avoid on weekends. MONTERREY/CARMEL -including the beautiful 17 mile drive. A good couple of hours south of SF. Beautiful, quaint little towns with a fab aquarium as well as great shopping and dining. NAPA VALLEY -winery tours, great dining, gondola ride to see the area from above, hot air balloon rides for same... In the City: TAKE A BUS TOUR to see many highlights on your first day, including The SeaCliff district and Pacific Heights (many famous mansions, etc.) GG park especially on a Sunday where you can peoplewatch as well as attend art and science museum and Hall of Flowers. Rent bikes for a great day in the park. FERRY BUILDING along Embardareo, similar to Fanuel Hall in Boston, lots of food vendors, etc. CHINA TOWN -authentic, fabulous dining and shopping UNION SQUARE - lots of great hotels and shopping ALAMO SQUARE -for the famous skyline view of victorian houses GG BRIDGE -spend a morning in the Marina District and visit the Palace of Fine Arts, then rent bikes and ride across GG Bridge. Ride back to the Marina for lunch and shopping. FISHERMAN's WHARF -just kind of fun and touristy. Not really high on my list, but everyone seems to want to go SAUSALITO -wonderful, charming town across the GG bridge from SF. Eat dinner there on the water and you will feast on a fabulous, sparkling view of SF. There is soooooo much more. Comments (18)We generally stay in Hilton or Starwood properties due to perks there. And I have a ton of Hilton points so I sometimes use them for free stays, so I book thru their websites. I've seen examples of friends who booked thru Expedia, Priceline, etc, and some have good luck and some not so great. Especially if they have to change plans. My DD really got screwed up in Atlanta one night when they were over there for a concert. The hotel over-booked, they wouldn't honor her reservation and wanted to send them to another hotel, which was unacceptable, so DD & friend ended up driving back to Alabama (about 4-hour drive and this was after the concert around 11-12 at night). She was NOT happy. But, for example, in booking some things on our own for Alaska, I've had better luck calling the Denali hotels direct. I was able to obtain a mountain view King room, get the AAA discount, but did inquire about other discounts we qualify for, secured lots of other information from the helpful person on the line, which I could not obtain on the internet. All the better hotels/lodges were showing sold out for the dates we wanted, and I knew they held rooms for the cruise passengers and tours. Plus our guy we're working with for the cruise part told me to call the hotel direct too....See More4kids4us
