Snowbound? I feel your pain. It's piling up out there!

I went out to feed the birds, and got covered with snow very quickly. I also put a couple of packages in the mailbox. This may have been a little optimistic on my part.

My son lives four miles from me. I emailed him at work to let him know it's been snowing hard for several hours. He hasn't seen any snow yet where he works. I hope the roads are well treated for his drive home.

The forecast is for about 10" today, and the same amount again on Sunday. There goes yet another Christmas party . . .

AND they're saying we might get the same thing again on Christmas Eve.

I might like winter if we didn't have to drive.

was snowing hard here this am. turned to freezing rain for about 3 hours. Roads are terrible. Hate this weather when it gets icey.

Wouldn't that be a great workout video for winter time (down time for gardeners)? Somehow simulating all the moves we do a hundred times a day throughout the growing season. Fall comes and BAM! down I sit, and that's it til spring (usually 10 or so pounds heavier). I always find that this time of year is the worst - but by the end of the summer, I feel much better, almost no pains at all. I am 50. This year - my 6th winter sowing was almost a non-starter. I just didn't feel motivated - kind of depressed actually - aches and pains. But, somehow I forced myself to do around 30 containers (previous years it was in the 100's) - maybe I'll do a few more while the nights are still frosty up here. But let me tell you, when I saw my first sprout 2 weeks ago, I got that same old thrill - it's still there :)

Ricky's Best Pumpkin Pie Recipe This is the finest pumpkin pie recipe I have ever made. The original recipe (from a 1912 cookbook) used regular pumpkins, the cheese pumpkins used here have more meat and more real pumpkin taste! While you may have to do some searching to find cheese pumpkins, it's worth the effort. I have also increased the amount of spices and decreased the amount of milk to yield firmer pies. 2 cups strained and mashed pumpkin (use cheese pumpkins for the best results, 12" diameter) 1/4 cup maple syrup 1/4 cup dark brown sugar 1 egg beaten well 1/2 teaspoon ginger 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1-1/2 cups whole milk or 1 cup whole milk and 1/2 cup cream 1 9" diameter deep pie crust per pie Cut pumpkin in half (12" diameter) place inverted over a cookie sheet or large bowl. Heat in oven at 325 degrees or microwave on high until top starts to collapse (skin will turn dark brown) or steam in a lobster pot. Scrape out pulp and strain well. Allow to dry and cool before using! The drier the pulp the firmer the pie. A good quality food processor can be used to really mash the pulp into a smooth mixture otherwise chop and mash the pulp by hand. Mix syrup, sugar, egg, cinnamon and ginger together. Slowly add milk and blend well. Add pumpkin mixture and blend well. While the mixture is blending, sprinkle some cinnamon on the pie crust and let it bake in the oven for 5 to 10 minutes. Fill the pie shell to capacity and then bake at 325 degrees in 9" pie crust until firm, about 1 hour. Check to make sure the pie shell does not overcook. Cool on racks for 1 hour and then refrigerate. Pumpkin pie is best when refrigerated overnight and served cool. A regular 12" diameter pumpkin will yield 3 pies, a 12" diameter cheese pumpkin will yield 2 pies. Serve with fresh whipped cream!

Trailrunner - I was reading some of this to DH last night, he thought they sounded like great ideas btw, and when I was done reading the first thing he said to me was,"Wow, I can't believe people take the time to type that much out trying to help someone. " Ha. Gotcha on the wear them only for running. Oh I know not to wear the orthotics and insoles at the same time. I know now (didn't at first years ago!) to take out the pads shoes come with first. Powerstep is the brand of inserts I bought from the Podiatrist. Heard of or any thoughts on them? I forget what name my orthotics are they don't say anything on them but they came in a bag that did. The bottom is hard plastic but the top is blue firm foamy stuff. He said something about it being new stuff. Do you think the Podiatrist would give me a hard time about "put a good padded front made of the new high tech triple layer stuff they have or....you can get a good insert and cut it to fit flush with the front of the orthotic"? Guess I won't know until I try but I'm picturing them wanting to know what I'm diagnosing myself since they apparently didn't think I needed that. Oh, well. I wondered how the ball of my foot was getting any support if I'm use my new orthotics in shoes I took the insole out since there's nothing there. In the past (I'm sure from wearing heels) I've had pain in the balls of my feet. I tried to tell him this too while I was there but he wasn't interested in hearing it since I wasn't having pain. Thanks for the heads up about the glucosamine. I think it actually might be what DH takes! I need to check that out. He gets on me about how I really should take it. I can take all three of those types of pills. That does sound like a lot! I'm guessing it just kills the pain longer? Does that help with the healing process at all. Perhaps that's a dumb question. I checked out that roadrunner site and the chart and I'm not sure if I'm N or PN. I'm under 150lbs and I do under 25 miles a week for N but the PN says, you run races or enjoy fast running. I like fast running. When I said I never considered myself a runner it's because I normally don't do more than 3 miles at a time and normally it's intervals. The thought of a 50 or even 10 mile race makes me cringe. Figured I'd ask but thought N would probably be my best bet regardless? Also, the NB shoes look like they're for trail running and I'm normally on a treadmill, does this matter? I really like that site. It even tells you to order sizes up for some shoes. The current ones I have are on there and it does say to order 1/2 size bigger. Go figure. Onlines shoes didn't tell me that! How's this for the laces? It still feels kind of tight around the top. Probably just the poor fitted shoes. For now, I'll rest from running. I have other sneakers I can wear for biking or whatever. By the time I'm ready to hopefully run again I'll make sure to have good sneakers. Seww - Thanks for the link. It seems very common here that even running stores have people in them that don't really know what they're doing. They just find the size in the back room. I'm at least going to go and attempt to try some on in person. Deedee - Oh my, I laughed out loud when I read that. That wasn't real nice of him! For a long time I thought I must be the only person with wider feet! One time on ebay I bought a really nice and expensive pair of heels. I did not know B meant narrow (I think it's B - whichever one is narrow). There is no way I can wear them. Not possible. It was funny even trying to put them on. They're in my closet because I couldn't resell them. Nobody in the world has a size 5 narrow foot either. :)

Hi purplesky i too have joint pain mostly in my legs like awful restlessness growing pains and i get pins and needles in my feet and hands and my shoulders ache , i have had blood tests done but they do not show up anything different with my hormones yet but my doc says im definatly peri , i have days when i feel totally weird and i feel like ive got some horrible disease even tho i probably havent its amazing what havoc hormones wreak on us ist it, i think its much more confusing to gauge where your at with the monthly cycle thing and symptoms when youve had a full hysterectomy like i have because of the absence of periods you know what im mean , the doctor reckons its difficult to get anything from the blood in peri that indicates a positive result because bloods nearly always show up normal LH and FSH even though most of the time its actually altered , the symtoms dont seem to have any fixed pattern really and are quite changable do you find that

Hi Susan - I worked 12 days out of the past 14, but I'm happy to say I started the winter break today. I'm off until January 12. No pay, but I sure need some time to catch up with housework and a bunch of other things . . . including CHRISTMAS!!

Yes, snowing here also. Started at about 2:30 this afternoon. It looks nice but I hope it stops soon.

Awwww....stop ya whining about a little bit'o the white stuff!! (j/k - I'm soooo envious of those of you that get a white Christmas) I bet Santa is grateful to have somewhere soft to land tho!!

It's 25Â°C (77F) here and humidity in the 90's so it's HOT - I just HAD to eat a bowl of ice-cream to cool down!

Stay safe everyone ... you're right Susan, it would be awful having to drive when the conditions are so bad.

By the time it stopped snowing at about 10am this morning, it had piled up 11 inches and deeper in places of minor drifitng and of course, the snow plow "gifts" on the sidewalk. The snow was too deep in many places for my 2-stage snow blower - it came over the top of the auger housing. That meant I had to a lot of backing up and making double passes. I should have gone out last night in the middle of the storm and made a first pass. The reason I did not was that I waited until the street plows had made their passes because they always cover the sidewalk with street gloop. Well, how short my memory from last year - should have made a first pass last night. It would have kept the depth down to a manageable height.

I had to dig out the mail box and newspaper tube - found today's paper buried in the tube.

Ah! We get a rest, and then we will get hit again Saturday night with an Alberta Clipper that teams up with another low pressure system, and then the bottom drops out of the temperature. Yes, Virginia, we will have an abundace of snow for Christmas.

Don't tell people to stop whining about snow and cold temperatures, ice,etc. until you have gone through it all.

I grew up in the prairies and talk about cold weather and freezing, they didn't have all the warm clothing we do nowadays to wear.

Its not fun to be snowed in, have to get driveway not only plowed which costs you but also sanded too.

Putting your pets outside and your dog freezes his ears in seconds of goign outside to do his stuff. He comes in crying in pain. Its awful.

And how about power outages and sitting in freezing temperatures and you have no water useage, can't flush toilets because you are on a well.

and yes, go outside no matter to give food to the birds who are so desperate and some do not make it through those times.

And the icy roads and sliding and sliding and no control at all and will I make it home or wherever you are going in one piece?

Having to walk up a long windy driveway in the dark because you can't drive your car up or down.

Don't talk about stop whining until you live what many of us have lived through.

We moved to southern California to get away from winters. I remember all the scraping the car windows, trying to get iced over door locks to open, and then trying to get a cold engine to start. We don't miss it at all. We do miss that special morning when you wake up and there has been a thick snowfall during the night and the world looks like a magical fairyland--till you have to go to work or shovel the walk.
