A good day to look back (many pics)

I didn't want to hijack jamie's 'Here's an old one-1961' thread. Many of us have scanned in old photos and since it's the last day of the year I thought it would be fun to share some favorites.

This is Dad and Mom on their wedding day in 1950. If they hang in there for another 9 months they'll celebrate 60 years in Sept.

Jump ahead a few more years to the 70's; my brother, cousins and me in our plaid, polyester, leisure suits. What were we thinking???

And the not so distant past. My family in November 1996, less than 2 months later I lost my first wife, Mary, to cancer. I believe I told that story when I first introduced myself at the KT many years ago. Now the two oldest kids are married, one is engaged, and the little guy sitting on my knee is a junior and looks over the top of my head.

Here is our family in 1991 and again in 2002. My how the kids changed in those 11 years! I still have the same hair cut and own and wear the wild colored blouse in the 1991 pic. I'm not big into change. :-)

Thank you everyone! I haven't noticed any hummer activity at the lobelia, we don't have that many around here and the neighbor feeds them with her feeder. I'm sure they pop by them when I'm not around. I did see a butterfly at the purple lobelia. The bees are enjoying the helenium and the agastache and echinacea planted near it. The camera I use is a Sony Mavica MVC CD-400, an older camera but works alright. I'd rather have a newer one with more mega pixels, this has 4, but it was free so I'll use it until I wear it out. That little green and black bug reminds me of a miniature dinosaur. I'm going to have to search and find out what it is. Karen

I admit to having cheated a little (ok, a lot) by planting food crops in and amongst most of my ornamentals so that I could water them all at the same time. Almost every pot with a flowering bush or bulb in it also contains a tomato, pepper, herb or onion plant, and earlier in the season I had lettuce growing in every bare spot I could find. I highly recommend this technique not just so that you can cheat on watering, but because it's great to grow your own food and many food plants look beautiful. There are a few things, however, in my yard and in our community garden that have never received a drop of supplemental water this year and still look fine. Off the top of my head, I can name these things: lady banks roses (I'm convinced you couldn't kill these, once mature, with any kind of neglect or abuse) climbing hydrangea (mine isn't old enough to bloom yet but it is growing fine and not drying out at all as far as I can tell, seems to still be spreading) gardenia (planted in an extremely dry spot under a large tree where I doubt it even gets much rainfall when we have rain, but has at least a foot deep mulch, mostly leaf mold, all around it) passionflowers (I have two kinds, the one with the startlingly beautiful purple flowers, and the one that makes the egg-shaped purple fruit but has only tiny insignificant white flowers that you have to search for if you want to see. Both are doing very, very well.) lilies of many varieties, although I tend to plant the tall ones (4-6 feet tall) creeping fig (another plant you can't kill once it gets past a certain age) naked ladies or lycoris squamigera, blooming their lovely pink heads off right now (transplants from Ohio that took 2 or 3 years after moving down here to decide to bloom, but are now apparently completely acclimated) verbena bonariensis, not only blooming without water but reseeding and growing new plants everywhere without water, which also grow to maturity and somehow bloom and reseed without any water, and so on into infinity. . . kudzu and poison ivy, about which no more need be said.

I forgot one important detail. In early April, when most of the plants were at 2 or 3 leaf pairs, they were looking spindly (we mistakenly started some tomatoes at the same time, which grew faster and forced us to push the lights higher, so perhaps the peppers were reaching), so we pinched off a few leaves on many of the peppers in the hopes of getting them to bulk up the stems and slow down. The two groups we didn't do this with, Habs and Ajis, actually look pretty much like the store-bought plants. So maybe this mutant-looking situation came from pinching off the leaves. Can anyone comment on this possibility? And if this is the culprit, are the plants shot or can we still use them?

I have spent several vacations on the Winipeg flowage out of Minaki, Ontario. My parents-in-law had a cabin on an island 5 miles from town. The only way in was by boat or swim. The terrain is similar - no sandy beaches. Just a rocky shoreline to bang the bow of the canoe. Landing can be tricky in wind and waves. That country is a stunning place to visit. Once you are out on the water, it hits you. This place could be dangerous. There are lots of ways to mess up, so one takes care not to do those things and then along comes a situation you did not think about. It keeps you alert. Mosquitos can be bad or not so bad, but are ever present. During the day, if there is a breeze that is faster than the flying speed (5 mph) of the buggers, they tend to stay parked on the underside of leaves. When the wind calms at nightfall and the relative humidity rises, they come out. To survive and sleep, you must have good mosquito netting on your tent and you should have a repair kit. However, we noted an interesting phenomonem. If you get in a canoe or boat and move away from shore, you will find a distance beyond which they will not venture. Its in the neighborhood of 30 ft. Those waters are populated with muskies and pike. When these fish are about, you do not sit on a dock and dangle your toes in the water. These fish have a teeth and a ferocious strike. A story circulated one year about a boy who dangled his toes, a muskie struck and stripped most of the flesh off his great toe - unpleasant! The guys made sure they did not go skinny dipping for obvious reasons. They wore suits and had no problems. And now it is story time. There were two young fellows who worked for the "Lands and Forest" during the summer. They had the job of moose survey and tagging. How do you place an ear tag in a wild moose?? It was their practice to go out in a small helicopter to spot the moose. When they found a moose swimming in water, they could swoop down, look for the ear tag and if none were present, tag the moose without much fuss. The moose was terrified however. The guy doing the tagging would climb out on the runners - regular modern cow - no - mooseboys. On this fateful day, they are 30 miles away from the station when they spy a moose in water. The water is almost over the shoulders. Now, there is one predictable thing about moose and that is they are unpredictable. This happless pair swoops down over the moose with a man riding the runner. The moose did not move. Just as soon as the tagger reached out to tag, the moose stood up! It was laying in a couple ft of water. The moose in getting up tips the helicopter over and it wrecks. The rotor hit the water. One person got a broken bone and the other one was knocked around a bit. There they were sitting in water with wrecked machine, one person significantly injured, and the radio shot. The storyteller stopped and never revealed how they got out. Needless to say, the accident was written up and the provedures revised.

My Dad and I in the backyard. I was about 6 here I think.

My Mom, myself (the one with the fat face and dark hair) and my two cousins. We are great friends still! My Mom is now 86 and lives in a long term care home. She has Alzheimers. Look at all the goodies. It must be Christmas!

Great idea for a New Year's eve, Ron, thanks. A photo of my brother and me - made about 1951, or so. My brother turned 65 today. Happy Birthday, Ronnie, my lifelong enemy, my partner in crime and my biggest protector!! LOL

soxxxx, my oldest son looks alot like me. Son #3 is so much like his Mom in looks and personality that it is uncanny. The others are more of a hybrid.

These are all great! Ron, thanks for starting this and sharing your wonderful family. Sandy, the 1899 Millers were an especially gorgeous couple. Moni, you and your sisters clearly inherited healthy genes as well as beautiful ones. Mush, your mom was lovely. . . Alzheimer's is so sad. Sue, thank goodness you rescued those pix. Jodi, what a difference 11 years makes--in your kids! Monica, that first shot is SO Fifties! :-)

The cousins in 1945: me, Barbara (who made the gift bags with my photos on them, and who has painted all the pictures for me), Terry (whom we lost last year following a liver transplant--and BTW, her daughter had a baby girl on Christmas Eve!), our Aunt (yes aunt) Claire, and Henry, who always looked solemn.

LOL Mcmann, it's a strong resemblance! My dad looked like the both of them, too. I tell Joey he could do worse. :-)

Here's a picture of my son for those who haven't seen him. I tried to find one that looked more like the two Harrys, but this one, taken at a ham radio event, is the best I can do for now.

Wonderful pictures everybody!

Here are a couple of me and my brother. I scanned these last week for a photobook. You can tell we didn't know much about cats. lol The first photo was taken in Minnesota I think.. on a family vacation. That's my mom behind us.

Here's my baby. She's about 4 in this photo. She is 20 now.

Oh, I'm truly loving all these photos today!!
These are my favorite kind, I think.
My husband has an old saying, "Pictures stop time", and how right he is.

I'm curious about the lovely Millers, too. Where were they from? There were some Millers from MS in my line.
