A Very Good Day (no pics)

I went to the nursery today and got a Honeycomb butterfly bush, Duranda Erecta (standard which I love), 36 alyssum plants, and some hot pink perennial verbena. When we got home, I planted all of the new plants plus three more of those new azaleas.

Yesterday I finished removing grass and weeds (okay digging out) the 15'X26" section where the new roses are going to be planted. Today I Preened the area and found my "missing" peony in the existing rose bed. A few of the pruning chores were handled, and one of the new iris bloomed (Brat).

Then I spent about 2 hours just sitting in the shade, petting white cat and enjoying my garden, the birds singing, drinking coffee and looking through some rose books. Now how cool is that!

What a great day. You sure are organised and ambitous. I never manage to get stuff planted on the same day I went out and bought it. Usually it's unload the car and water all the new plants and that's it. And no gardening for me today even though I have lots to plant as it is raining all day.

Isn't it nice just to be able to actually sit, relax and enjoy the garden? Bet that doesn't happen too often LOL!

That was a very good day. and to be able to get all that done and still relax to enjoy your garden, nothing could be more perfect. I had rain all day --- finally went out with an umbrella, cause I had to at least take a quick look. things are changing every day now.

lol... not to hijack this thread, but while I'll agree basketball takes more athleticicm, baseball takes more intelligence of the game and hand eye-coordination. I can hit three point shots all day and dunked when I was in highschool but put me in the cage against a 90 mph heater, even if I know it's coming I can't touch it. Another couple of notes: Dan seems to 'get the most' out of everything he plants. The blue iris against the yellow-gold leaves of A.Shir. 'Auream'. The blinding colors of A. pal. Beni Schischihenge. It's all just really amazing.

The Bustopher, I planted those delphiniums a few years ago, and they keep comming back each year. Many people here have mentioned they have probs growing them too, but somehow they seem to do OK in my garden. I don't have full sun though, so that may help when the summer temps rise.

Helene, so sorry to hear these latest developments. The elevated white count would seem to indicate some sort of infection in her body, isn't that correct? I think you're right to be considering hospice. They are experts in pain management and will ensure that your mother is comfortable. It's also support for YOU, too. What I learned from my mother's hospice nurse is that many people wait too late to seek the help, which is just a shame. There is still such a negative impression of hospice out there, as a "last gasp." I thought it was that way, myself, and when they first mentioned it to me at the nursing home, I was horrified. I'm glad I did it when I did, however, because that hospice nurse was wonderful. I could reach her at any time -- she gave me her home and cell numbers -- and it was much easier and more direct than calling the doctor who was assigned to Mom's care. Hope you are able to sleep a bit tonight.

A very satisfying day for you. Don't you just love it. You really got a lot done today.
I cleaned up an old bed today. Got rid of a bunch of plants I've decided I don't really like. Last year I got rid of a huge amount of heirloom bearded iris that I don't like any more after I have more of the newer ones. Never really got a lot planted in there, so this year I have a huge bed to fill.

Hi Rita, DH and I were out fairly early...his desk top computer has suddenly developed big problems so we took it in to have it checked out (he is on his laptop now) and I went by the garden center after wards since it was very near.

Home and I cooked lunch, then went out and planted. Hey, planting is easy after the 8 hour day of clearing the new rose area. So, I naturally deserved a break and took it. It was great.

We had a bit of rain Monday, but not util night fall (perfect). I understand the umbrella fully.

Sometimes it is necessary to shovel prune. A big bed? To Fill? Now that is exciting.

So maybe thats the secret. I never start out too early and have just about given up cooking LOL! Certainly no cooking of lunch, maybe dinner, ha. Sorry about the computer problems, don't I know what that's like, aweful!

Nancy- Sounds as if you need lots of new iris to make up for the old tossed ones. I just like the new ruffly types so much now and I am hooked on them. If you have lots of room with not much planted try zinnias, they look great en mass.

Glad you had a great gardening day Kay. I have been on vacation all week with beautiful weather. Sunday evening I twisted my knee, re hurt it twice since and haven't been able to get not one plant in the ground, aaarrrgggghhh!!!!!

I did it again today! More plants, and dug up a strip about 2'X30' to plant zinnias...I planted Both swamp milkweed and the regular orange and yellow butterfly weed. I have some really gorgeous petunias, but didn't plant them today. And I got seven roses from Vintage!!!

Katladie, whatever you do, guard that knee. Ice it and elevate it. Knees are no plaything.

I picked up some pretty Wave Petunia's a few days ago, to plant in my 2 long cement planters.I wanted purple and the tag in them said Purple, too, b ut they are starting to bloom now,and they are not purple, but, I am going to plant them anyway..Then I have a 6pk of regular petunias that ARE purple..Haven't decided where I am going to plant them at yet.

This is funny! Down here in FL, the petunias are getting leggy with the heat and they will have to be pulled out very soon.

Jean, good for you. The annuals always add so much color. I usually plant some red petunias here each spring. And Sharon, isn't that the way? Just when yopu have time and need to get things done. Hope your kneww gets better soon.

Kay, you sure have been busy this spring and the garden is getting larger and even more beatiful. I usually grow some Milkweeds here myself but I used to have more than I have now years ago. They die out on me after awhile. But then others grow from seed here and there. All that space for zinnias sounds heavenly.

Kay: I got Honeycomb last year in the fall along with 2 other varieties of butterfly bushes for our new patio area. The butterflies quickly found the new treat as well as the hummingbirds. I'm waiting to see how they did over the winter since they they leaf out later in spring here.
