Wow, that is spectacular! More than likely, it will be a fine transaction. I always think, what is the worst thing that can happen? I guess it would be that you lose your money somehow, which probably won't happen, but could you live with that?

Have you by any chance looked around in your area jewelry stores to see if there is anything similar or comparable in appearance and price?

It is a beautiful ring, and evidently that is the one you like best, but looking around just might be helpful.

Just a thought since your apprehensive, have you considered having one custom made? I do it all the time with a jeweler I work with. If your not sure of a local jeweler check with your insurance company to see if they can recommend one, that's how I found mine.

The ring is beautiful. I would try to find one locally, or have one custom made. That's just me, though. I have to "see it in person" or work with a dealer I know I can trust.

What about sizing? Yes PayPal will return your money if something goes wrong but with a ring like that I would want a jeweler I could go back to if anything was wrong.

My husband had a wedding ring custom made for our 25th anniversary. It was worth the price. I now can't wear it because of my arthritis but we would never purchase anything like that without seeing it in person.

salgal- it's beautiful. Sapphires are my favorite colored gem - but I can't offer any advice about etsy. I've only purchased relatively inexpensive items.

Does the seller provide a certificate of appraisal with a detailed description of the stones and does he guarantee the value? The appraisal should also state the whether the sapphires were heat treated or infused to enhance the color and the country of origin. When the ring arrives you could then take it to a local jeweler for an appraisal to verify the seller's appraisal.

That's a beautiful photo job on that ring. The band appears substantial and I like the roudned edges on the inner diameter. However, as a warning, things may not be what they appear to be.

First off, is a description of the ring and do they guarantee the materials are as stated? Those blue stones are suspicious - what are those? If those are blue sapphires, they are spectacular. Somehow, I find it unbelieveable they could find that many stones so closely matched on color and appearance unless these are 'treated' stones. Those could be glass. Watch out for descriptors such as simulants or sapphire-like. Some simulants can be quite good, but you need to know what the material is, its hardness and index of refaction. Ring stones should have a hardness of mohs 7 and greater. Quartz has hardness of mohs 7; agate can run a bit harder. Hardness of 8 or more is preferred. A hardness of 7 is equal to many beach sands and therefore can be micro-scratched and dulled if exposed to beach activities. Hardness 7 can be found in many of the grits encountered in everyday life.

An example of diamond simulant widely advertised is "diamond aura". The sellers will not disclose the material although it is very attractive. All I know about it is that it is lab grown.

Lab grown corundum, athough sneered at by some, should be taken more seriously because from a technical viewpoint, it is as good if not better than natural corundums. Sapphire and ruby are corundums and ruby is a red sapphire.

There are a couple of lab grown materials that can rival diamond in appearance and is very hard. These make good ring stones.

Remember, the prime requirement for a ring stone is hardness; next comes appearance and toughness. Ringstones are exposed to grits of all kinds in everyday wear and must be hard to retain polish. Softer stones are suited to items not worn on the hand or wrist. For example, opal is quite soft compared to other gems but is prized due to its color and appearance.

I have a problem with buying over the internet for expensive rings. If the seller can not, or will not, adequatley describe the stones, that is a red flag.

The cut of the stone greatly influences its value. A poor cut allows too much light to leak through the stone instead of being reflected back to the viewer. Check the main stone(s) by viewing it straight on and then begin to tilt it until you can see through it. A good cut will show good reflection when viewed head-on and should maintain good light return up to tilt angle of 10 deg or more. Excellent cuts will give good return up to 15 deg of tilt.

Yes, buying at a reputable jeweler may be more expensive, but you should get a better representation and guarantee of quality.

By the way, I do like very much the design of the ring you have chosen.

Even though they say a lot of the right things, I feel like I should listen to my instincts. I know pictures can be enhanced.

So last night Jim and I had a discussion about it and we are going to take a picture to a jeweler on Saturday to get an estimate.

In my search (quest really) I have seen several very similar styles, but for some reason I keep coming back to this one.
I think it is the tight fit of the princess cut sapphires and also the roundedness of the sides.

Comfort fit is the most important when you're selecting a wedding ring you'll wear 24/7. Keep the rounded sides! I worked for a jewelry store (certified gemologist even) and I have worn bands. Comfort fit 100%. I too love the style. It's gorgeous. Glad you found your ring however you get it.

There is no way that there are 70 diamonds that each weigh 0.40 carat. So, that has to be a TOTAL diamond weight of 0.40 carat. Seventy diamonds weighing a total of less than one-half carat means that they are, essentially, diamond chips. Although the photo makes it appear that the diamonds are each fully cut, there is simply no way that the diamonds in the ring you'd receive would be fully cut diamonds. (And a ring that contains 70 diamonds that are each 0.40 carat in size would be one HUGE ring.)

An "F" color diamond is considered colorless, which is good. The very best color rating for a diamond is "D."

The clarity of the diamonds are rated as VS - meaning they are Very Slightly flawed. But, the write-up doesn't say if they are VS1 or VS2, so I'm guessing they may be VS2. The clarity ratings go (from best to worst) as follows: Flawless, Internally Flawless, VVS1, VVS2, VS1, VS2, SI1, SI2, I1, I2, and I3.

The write-up doesn't say how many sapphires are in the ring. It just says, "set with beautiful princess natural blue sapphire of 1.00 carat." So, again, that's a total carat weight of 1 carat, but you can see 11 stones (and you know there are more than that), so they would each be very small, too.

I think the ring would be a stunning wedding band, but I agree with everyone who has advised you to go to a reputable local jeweler to see about having one custom made for you.

I would take the photo to a local jewelry shop and ask them if they can order one for you.

marie cate. to answer your question I can't have it sized because the gold has a design the whole way around as well as rubies around the whole ring. It is impossible to make it larger. The ring is quite wide.

The finger mate I have looked into for my engagement ring, but the price for me is just a little too expensive. 5 years ago it was around 250-300 per ring.

My arthritis has made my joints at least 2-3 times the size they should be. My rings were a size 4 1/2 & the last time I was at the jewelers just for the fun of it I tried to see what size ring would fit over the knuckles, it was a size 7.

I would assume you are tempted because the price is unbelievably less than local shopping has offered. I would fear "You get what you pay for" here. Sadly much of the educated advise in this thread is also a warning as you shop in the mall or other chain jewelry stores. Any place really as 99% of us have to trust and rely on what the sales person is telling us about the gems in question. Adding miles and mail order into the mix just seems to be a recipe for disappointment. DH worked in a small town jewelry store back in the day. He won't even allow my ring to be cleaned by a local place as he is worried my stone could get switched for a lesser grade diamond. My opinion: more reason to save money, buy less. In the end only you the buyer knows what you are wearing!! But I am cheap that way.

No I would not buy that from them. You cannot look at the ring in real life, you'd need to put it on and see how a ring feels on your finger. I bought a ring very similar to that but it is costume jewelry and it is so uncomfortable on my finger that I cannot even wear it!

The photo of the ring reminds me of a ring DH gave me, it wasn't as elaborate as yours but it was an 'anniversary' ring - a band with a row of diamonds. But like the style of your ring, the stones didn't go all the way around the ring and as your wore it the ring would rotate on your finger and then you could see that the back of the ring was plain. We ended up taking it back for a ring with stones completely encircling the band.

mary3444 - that's a shame that it won't work for your rings. I have 2 rings like that where the stones go all the way around the ring and I can no longer get them over my knuckle. I toyed with trading them in on a different setting but DH says I should just save them and give them to my kids some day.

Arcy, actually it is not an unbelievably good price. Most brand recognized stores have similar styles for much less money.
I am am nervous anytime I spend a considerable amount on jewelry for many of the reasons stated in this thread. I want to be able to have it cleaned and serviced as needed and know I have a quality piece that will last a lifetime. (as a good ring should)

bumping this, cause I found the ring at sam's club, today..it might be a "thinner" version, as it was under $500...but wow! in person it is a dazzler!

He is not a jewelry guy and really doesn't understand the concept of price vs value.

He used to buy the cheapest no matter what it was. After quite a few years of coaching I think I have convinced him to buy the "best quality we can afford". and if you don't love it or it's not want you want... walk away.
We are at the point in our lives that there is nothing we "need" . So we can wait to get exactly what we want.

He will come around on the ring being custom made..Eventually ;-)
