New Years Menu/Plans?

My adult kiddos are coming in New Years Eve to spend the night. We will do fireworks for the Grands. They usually like the Sparklers and Roman Candles. We don't want anything with a big "boom". Last year Sammie (Dog) almost had a heart attack over the noise.

I'm having Prime Rib, Scalloped Potatoes, Grilled Garlic Asparagus, Black eyed Pea Caviar, Wheat Rolls and Pecan Pie with Bourbon Sauce. But, I think I might have to make boxed Mac & Cheese for the Grands who are very picky eaters.

There will be 15 of us. So we will have lots of appetizers and desserts that everyone is bringing. We usually have Wine, Beer or Kahlua Drinks on New Years Eve.

I'll be working New Year's Eve and day. Never do anything anyway and at least one of those days will be overtime!

I forgot to say my Meal Menu is for New Years Day. We are having Shrimp Gumbo for New Years Eve.

When you say "rich tomato basil soup" do you mean rich with cream? or only with flavor? How about roasted veggies...red and green peppers, chunks of sweet onion maybe chunks of eggplant maybe zucchini, and a few asparagus spears for good measure..slices of baby bella 'shrooms...toss with EVOO, some Kosher salt...a bit of garlic ( if there is not a lot in other dishes) a bit of sugar, balsamic...and oregano...or parsley or rosemary or any herb that blows your dress up. How about a side of mushroom risotto....? Oven roasted potatoes are always wonderful.....and can go into the oven before the meat. If your soup is broth based....how about that spinach dish ( the name escapes me!!) spinach, cream, lots of fresh grated parm....bread crumbs and baked...has a woman's name!! AARGH it's hell to get old! Peas in a little butter, oregano tarragon sauce....thickened just a tiny bit with corn starch....neeed a recipe....give a shout. What are you saucing the beef with?....could I suggest a blue cheese/walnut sherry sauce?? Linda C

Sauerbraten, red cabbage w/apples & onions, mashed potatoes w/gravy from the sauerbraten, fresh green beans w/bacon, & Dutch apple pie for dessert. Dinner will be later this evening so about 1:00 p.m. I'm putting out appetizers of crispy mini-lobster tacos w/fresh salsa & a fresh fruit/cheese platter. I wouldn't normally do the lobsta w/sauerbraten later but our guests expect some form of lobsta when coming to New England. /tricia

Already a huge help! The coronets (thanks for the link) do not look like that picture in the French Laundry cookbook. I see they require napkins and the comment that they fall apart means a plate after all--and maybe a mess on the plate. May be a no-go. Won Ton spoon is an interesting idea for anything. Love the idea of a shot of Calvados. Not for every palate but it shifts away nicely from Champagne. (We're not knowledgeable enough to start pairing wines with food.) In my neck of the woods, shots of soup have been around -- usually two or three. But don't own shot glasses -- do own multiple demi-tasse. May decide to do two soups if they are both simple. If I do clarified consomme from scratch, just one. Any ideas? I've never had quail but butcher assures me they are ordered boneless. And picking at them or picking them up is part of slowing down the eating without adding more food. (At least that is the theory.) About the two pieces of chocolate: hmm. (Cost 5.00 a piece -- or up to 10:00 per piece. Elaborate. One is enough, in my mingy view.) But you are right about the possibility that hearty eaters (of which the only ones at the table are high health risk) would go hungry. Plan is to have an assortment of bread throughout. Plus in light of your comment, a solution might be to have a more lavish assortment of cheeses. (Problem is the leftovers add calories--I can't control myself.) I realize I sound like a "food is the enemy" proponent. Dr. just informs me cholesterol has to go down to meet new guidelines or else it is medication for me, an outcome I don't want. I daresay I'll relent and add pate before I'm through with this menu. One year we did cassoulet and it was wonderful--but I think I am still carrying those pounds from a week of cooking in duck fat.

"Back in the day" DH and I had a social circle of 8-10 couples who always had a party on New Years Eve, hosted in the home of one or another of the couples. Now there are few of those friends left, or able to be out and about. There hasn't been a NYE party for several years. I was talking with one of those friends last night about the good times we had and how we miss that and those folks who aren't with us now. Great memories! Tradition calls for Black-eyed peas on New Years Day (and for some, cabbage also.) This year I am trying something new: Black-eyed Pea Soup, a recipe given to me by a neighbor. So far, the usual, hopping john, dinner cornbread, roast pork, turnip greens!

DIL's mother and her DH are coming. Everyone will bring something.

No plans yet. I may snuggle up in my new quilt and watch movies. Maybe Mom and I'll go to our favorite steak house around 5:00 when they open. It's in a little town about 15 miles from here. DGK's gave me a GC for there.

NY Eve we usually have prime rib and crab legs but this year I was afraid I would have to work at the jewelry store so I ordered beef wellington and crabcakes courtesy of QVC.

For NY Day it is sauerkraut! Pork and Sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, dumplings, potato rolls......traditions!

We're having a WEDDING!! Our youngest son is getting married, a 6pm New Years Eve candlelit ceremony, and then a great reception. I still have LOTS to do to get ready, but it's great, I am so happy....

Our plans are still up in the air. IF we stay home which it looks like we may do, it will be the first time in over 8 years that we didn't go out or have a party.

Nothing for New Year's Eve.

New Year's Day will be a birthday party for my DGS's fiancÃ©e. My DD (his DM) is hosting it so I only have to show up!

But I realized this morning, I didn't get Blackeyed peas for my dinner. Guess I'll have bad luck next year!

No it's not to late....Run to the store...Get the Blackeyed Peas.

Never...have a New Years Day without Blackeyed Peas....trust me. LOL!

No plans for New Years Eve. Will probably go to bed early. New Years DAy DH always cooks a big pork dinner, but this year it will be just the two of us. Our daughters have party plans with their friends.

We will have our annual. Rib eyes and snow crab legs. DH and I have been doing this since our very first NYE together in 1982! Sometimes the kids are here, sometimes not. When they were younger, they could have friends here, but THEY could not go out on the roads. Then we will sit back and watch some movies and probably be in bed by 11:00! Partiers...we aren't! LOL

New Year's Eve if we are still awake we will wish each other Happy New Year. If we are asleep we will wake up as usual the next morning and wish each other Happy New Year. There will be fireworks in the neighborhood so most likely I will be snuggling with the dogs and holding Buddy in my lap. He is the one who is most afraid of the fireworks.
For our New Years meal we will have hopping john, cornbread, turnip greens and whatever else anyone wants. Those three are must haves.

Excuse my Northern ignorance, but what is 'hopping john?'. I've had Black eyed peas, but not turnip greens.
