Happy New Year! How was your New Year's Eve?
Comments (25)Ours was utterly quiet, although not unpleasant :). Both kids were off doing their own NYE celebration so the house was nice and calm. We ate dinner, chatted, then he went to sleep early and I read for awhile. Boring? Maybe but also a moment to cherish being secure in our lives and with so much for which to be grateful. Actually, our New Year's reminds me of the lyrics to one of my favorite Carly Simon songs, Misfit: There are plenty of late nights If you want to stay up for them You'll just want to find yourself a friend And tie a couple on in a night spot Draw pictures of your soul, win the jackpot Pour tears in your beer It's hip to be miserable when you're young and intellectual In a bit you'll admit you're a misfit Come on home with me We'll turn on the TV About 10 o'clock we'll turn off the light Not every man was born to stay up late at night There are plenty of boats to catch If you notice all the sails in the wind But you better look hard my friend In case you catch a ride on the wrong one In the distance is the one you belong on Oh the water is wide It's hip to be miserable when you're young and intellectual In a bit you'll admit you're a misfit Come on home with me We'll sit under a tree And if you get the itch I'll supply the scratch Not every man was born with a boat to catch It's hip to be miserable when you are young and intellectual In a bit you'll admit you're a misfit A misfit...See MoreNew Years' Eve menu - What's yours?
Comments (35)Terri, I love sparkling grape juice and we always have it at family dinners but I did not think to get some for tonight. Ann, I just happened to catch the Barefoot Contessa last week and she made the Green Goddess dressing. It just sounded so good to me...well anything with a c. of fresh basil suits me just fine! This is a very refreshing and just plain GOOD salad dressing. Basil Green Goddess Dressing 1 cup good mayonnaise 1 cup chopped scallions, white and green parts (6 to 7 scallions) 1 cup chopped fresh basil leaves 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (2 lemons and see My Note) 2 teaspoons chopped garlic (2 cloves) 2 teaspoons anchovy paste 2 teaspoons kosher salt (see note) 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 cup sour cream Salad: 3 heads Bibb lettuce 2 to 3 tomatoes Place the mayonnaise, scallions, basil, lemon juice, garlic, anchovy paste, salt and pepper in a blender and blend until smooth. Add the sour cream and process just until blended. (If not using immediately, refrigerate the dressing until ready to serve.) Cut each head of lettuce into quarters, remove some of the cores, and arrange on 6 salad plates. Cut the tomatoes into wedges and add to the plates. Pour on the dressing and serve. NOTES: I did not add any salt to this recipe due to the anchovy paste. Also, I got a 1/4 c. juice from just half a lemon and a small lemon at that! Comments (26)We will head south on Wednesday. Probably come home on Sunday. Then again we may stay longer. We never know once we get there. I will take my sewing machine and do some sewing for the grandaughters for summer. Never to early to get started. Happy New Years to all. Stay safe in your travels... Comments (23)My favorite New Year's Eves happened when we were young. We went to a very fancy restaurant with another couple every year where there were just 2 seatings, and we took the early one. The ladies were given little red footstools for their feet if they were short, and we all sat in red velvet upholstered wing back chairs. The menfolk would end the leisurely dinner with cigars dipped in brandy. However, our friends moved back east, and my brother and his wife joined us one year. But now we just stay home. DH is in bed by then, and I can catch the celebrations on TV if I am interested. But these New Year's Eves at the now shuttered Chez Cary were our very favorite....See MoreZalco/bring back Sophie!
