New Years menu....Fancy or simple?

SIMPLE at our house, everyone has wined and dined themselves out over the holiday season here so every New Years it's at mom's place. Depending on how many make it here (weather) it can be 6 or 20 I just have to know how many before hand, always having enough for a couple of strays picked up along the way. Ours is Beef Dip (roast in the oven right now) Salads, Tossed Green with a Raspberry Vinaigrette (thanks Ana), Greek and maybe a Hot Pepper Salad. The Frozen Lemon Mousse is in the freezer so all I have to do is go pick up my Tim Horton Buns and make the salads tomorrow. There will be a selection of wines to choose from but if I guess right the coffee pot is going to get a workout, been there, done that, don't do it anymore LOL.

So what have you guys planned for dinner on New Years? Fancy or Simple?

Annette that sounds lovely , We have been warned to expect a blizzard with hurricane force winds tonight so are staying put. We will have Jay's shrimp pasta with avacadoes, tomatoes, peas and horseradish sauce.

I put sauerkraut and ribs (western style ribs)in the slow cooker this morning at 9am. It was done to perfection around 3:30pm, and I added steamed dumplings on top. Then I did a foolish thing - I ate TWO big plates full...oh,my..why? I'm so full I could bust. Hate when I do that.

Will be staying home also and watching the ball drop in Times Square on the TV. Happy New Year to you all and thanks for letting me join the cottage forum even tho I don't have a cottage (I WILL build one some day in the orchard. I may be 90yrs old, but I will have it!). Everyone be safe if you go out tonight!

If you are planting strawberries from seed the first year, you are supposed to pick the flowers off until July 1st so the roots can grow and you will get a bigger crop. You are also supposed to get rid of 1/3 of your crop keeping only 1/3 of your runners, next year do the same of your older plants replacing 1/3 of them, etc., each year keeping your strawberry plants at between 2 and 3 years old at all times. Always move them to a different location because of bugs each year, cut them back to 1 inch tall in fall and move to their new location. This is from books and internet and most say the same, but that is for everbearing strawberries. If you have June bearers, you never cut your runners because that is where your crop comes from. Do you know what kind of strawberry you have? It will help, there are 3 kinds, everbearing, june bearing, and another I can't remember similar to everbearing. I thought when you bought plants, they were on their second year? I might be wrong, but you can ask your nursery where you bought them how old they are. And speaking only from books, the cucumbers do not like wind either, they call them ridge cucumbers because you usually plant them in a ridge, a few inches deep in the row, this gives them a sunken bed and protection from wind. I can't say from experience this is true, and my cucumbers did better as ground cover producing much more than the year before, but location is probably the reason why too. I changed them to a different row the next year and on the ground you can say they may have sprouted more roots making more plants.

Glad to do it! No thanks necessary. I probably won't post pictures each month because the blocks will be the same but with all of them different this month, it seemed like a fun idea. I'll do it again in June when we do the blue/yellow stars. I think that's going to be a pretty batch. And I can hardly wait until the month with the Santa Faces!

I would suggest Louisiana irises for a foundation planting. They look great all year round, evergreen, lush but tidy. Not a very long bloom period, but I think you'll prefer having a foundation planting that never gets scraggly at any point of the year. I have the "Black Gamecock" variety along the west side of my house in Houston, and have been very happy with them. They come in a lot of colors. Bulletproof, very happy with wet feet (which so many plants hate), and after the first year I basically never water them. All I do is pull out some dead leaves once or twice a year. Agapanthus could also be good--I see it here a lot planted in a similar way, but I don't have it myself so I can't speak to how easy to grow they are. Don't bother with lavender--I can only keep it alive in pots. It can't handle any sogginess at all. Check out salvias (but not all of them!), coneflowers, inland sea oats, and native hibiscus (aka swamp mallow--does that sound like LA or what?) for a cottage garden look in a gulf coast reality. This ain't England, so don't be imitating those pretty little houses on Masterpiece Theater. I agree that you shouldn't change the grading. If you really must, definitely get a company specializing in drainage to do the work, not just a landscaper--and not the cheapest one either. Gulf coast houses live and die by good drainage. Don't do anything until the autumn, except spread Microlife 6-2-4 fertilizer to activate the biology of the soil. It's really too late to plant at this point--3/4 of whatever you put in will get fried.

Pretty inspiration photo! We had this kitchen layout in our last home, except we had a wall that would be located at the bottom of your plan. This included, oven/microwave combo, pantry cabinet and desk area. The counter space between our frig and sink was less than what your plan shows. Our coffee pot sat there and the cabinet above housed the drink ware. To the right of the sink, was the dishwasher- a good suggestion! Make sure you have enough aisle width, ours was tight since our island extended in front of the frig. Having the refrigerator in that spot was great for accessing the table and also outdoor dining/grilling, which we really enjoyed. On the subject of islands, ours was one flat surface. I loved it! No prep sink. Having never had one, I can't speak on their function. We did a lot of buffet style for family gatherings, so one large, clear surface worked great for that. It also served as a workspace for kids school projects. The only thing that got on my nerves, was the actual island seating. Our entrance into the kitchen was where yours is, but with having the wall, traffic flow got quite congested. Definitely could have used another foot or so. Kids and pushing chairs back in- just doesn't happen, unfortunately. We started with four stools and ended with two. They never really sat their all lined up, maybe one or two at a time. Conversation wise, no one likes to be the awkward person sitting in the middle! Also, I really disliked moving all the chair legs in the kitchen to sweep or mop around. :( The microwave might be too tall for the younger ones to reach, but maybe you want it that way. I would worry about spilling or hot things from above. A drawer type could work, but cost more as commented on. If that's not an option, might be more practical for one in the corner counter space. It obviously, wouldn't have the built in look though. Looking at the pantry, I think the storage could be better utilized if you didn't have the angled walls. Will it remain this way? Considering windows, we had one above the sink and I always wished it was larger or more of them. Looks like you will have that benefit. :)

Simple for the two of us tonight as well. I cooked shrimp in a recipe given to me by a former coworker from Mozambique which is always a great hit and simple to prepare as well. For dessert we had farÃ³fias, a traditional Portuguese sweet which looks like clouds and it's very light and delectable. At midnight we will open a bottle of champagne and eat the 12 traditional raisins, one per each stroke of the clock.

For lunch tomorrow I'm planning to cook a paella for the two of us. Family will probably join us for tea, so I baked an apple cake and a type of custard pie with "gila" pumpkin jam which is another classic for us around Christmas and New Year's time. We also have "bolo rei" (king cake, a type of fruit cake) which is a traditional cake in Portugal at this time of the year.

Have a wonderful New Year, dear cottagers, and see you all in the garden next year, i.e. tomorrow!

We had quesadillas (sp?) and blueberry pie. I found blueberries in the freezer that I picked this summer and forgot.

We have no Champagne, so I offered DH some 20 year old Scotch that is now aged to 40. He declined the drink and made us coffee instead.

Happy New Year and a fine, peaceful Garden Year.

Just wanted to remind my fellow cottagers that, if you manage to have access to it, do watch the New Year's Concert from Vienna. The Vienna Phylarmonic Orchestra hosts it every year in the Musikverein premises in Vienna and it's simply a magical event, featuring the waltzes and polkas of the Strauss family. The Ballet of the Vienna Opera usually makes an appearance as well. Ever since I was a child I watch this concert on TV every New Year's Day. I'm not sure how easy it is to catch on a TV network in the US and Canada, (it's a must in Europe) but if you have the chance, don't miss it. It's a lovely and uplifting way to start a New Year!

PS: The flowers decorating the room are also not to be missed. A traditional gift from the San Remo city in Italy, the display of flowers in the room is always exquisite.

I joined my cousins last night for a lovely Prime Rib Roast, with mashed taters, roasted parsnips and onions and brussel sprouts! and of course, Gravy - yummy!! Apple pie with cheese for dessert. Did our Christmas gift exchange before dinner - got lots of fun stuff for my garden. We watched Ron James, a Canadian comic, had us tearing up we were laughing so hard. Very Canadian, most Americans don't get him as he is quite topical, though Sarah Palin did not escape unscathed! Then I came home to stoke the fire - stupid front door had blown open a crack!! Arrgghhh!! Watched George Strombolopolos to Midnight, and celebrated with his audience. He had Sarah Palin on the show as a guest - interesting interview. It was just getting warm mid am today - I added a Hudson Bay wool blanket to my bed and was just fine. Today, I will be treated to a full turkey dinner, with all the trimmings, with old friends. I will bungie the damned door closed just in case. It was a bad year for doors here last year, and apparrently this one isn't fixed yet!!
