Darn! It's upsetting when these things happen.

I had a similar experience recently with my friend's cat who ate a one-foot piece of yarn I left on the floor. Yarn is very dangerous when eaten by cats. I was worried sick and checked her stools for the yarn. It came through pretty fast, and I was very relieved.

When are you leaving, Friday or Saturday? Surely it will pass through by then. If not, whoever takes care of Dusty will have to watch for any signs of distress or changes in behavior. Let's hope for the best!

I am sure Dusty will be just fine. It is a worry, though. I know, Georgy is the first dog I ever had that will eat anything. Pencils, pens, batteries, screws, coins. You name it, she'll eat it. I am always fishing something out of her mouth and it is a worry.

I understand your worry; I would be, too, although things will most likely be ok. But how about taking Dusty for an x-ray, just to be sure? See how it's positioned (sideways wouldn't be good, point side up would most likely be better than point side down, etc.) It would ease your worry and get a jump-start if there is actually anything wrong. Better safe than sorry.

Try not to worry too much. Most likely things will be fine. If not, I'm sure you would see some signs of your dog in distress. I've lost track of the number of things Sparky has gotten into. I had to create a facebook page with pictures LOL. He used to eat the kids crayons (before the facebook thank goodness) and the sparkly ones made for some interesting poops.

On the other hand, it may make his tail pop up when he needs to go for a walk

This Christmas my 11 month old black lab ate half the residents of the nativity scene that was under my x-mas tree. I did not realize it until I was picking up the "remains of the day" and noticed some odd looking things. The only thing left in the nativity scene was baby Jesus and a few animals. No more Virgin Mary, Joseph or the wisemen lol. Thank goodness my lab was ok.

Not too funny because those things are sharp and imagine them cutting their way through a winding instestine.

Next time, pull them out of the bird/lamb/what "EVER" with pliers. They don't work anyway.

We have paid for granddaughter's cat to have surgery TWICE for eating things he shouldn't.. The first time he ate a brand new package of 25 ponytail holders..They were actually put up in our daugthter's vanity drawer, he is very clever and standing up underneat it and working it with his paws till he gets the drawer open... they plugged him up good. The xrays of his intestines looked like a braided rope.. then the next time he somehow got ahold of a sewing machine bobbin and ate all the thread off of it... That time they had to take all his intestines out.. all 12 feet of them, lay them out and every 12 inches cut a slit and get the thread out, He even had some wrapped around his tongue. Yes.. we would do about anything for that child...but we told them they better keep things put up, that was the last surgery we would pay for...

I know it does seem funny, and we have all made the "wonder when he'll be done" jokes, but the timer still hasn't passed. I really wasn't expecting it until this morning. He pooped 4 times yesterday, no timer. But he is still hungry, and acting perky like nothing is wrong. If he doesn't pass it this morning on our walk, I will take him in for an xray to see where it is. I leave on Saturday for LA,so I've got some time but I would hate to leave him if he has to have surgery. I do feel better hearing about all the things your pets have eaten and passed without problems. Thanks for that information!

My sisters dog once ate a dish towel and had to have surgery to remove it.
My own dog ate a rubber band Christmas day. She's acting fine, eating drinking and pooping so I assume it came out okay. Why would a dog eat a rubber band? It was on the asparagus I cooked for dinner, it got covered withy beef grease from the prime ribs I was making in the oven, fell on the floor and Molly consumed it.

Is this going to be like the "My cat threw up in the washing machine" thread? It's going to have a bunch of responses but no real information? *grin*

I"m sorry sleeperblues! I was not trying to turn your anguish into a joke and I'm sure no one else was either. Just trying to say that dogs eat lots of stuff and most of the time it all comes out okay. While cleaning up dog poop, we often were trying to figure out "stuff" was.

Oh dear. This is truly serious. A perforated intestine is nothing to laugh at - I completely understand your concern.

I feel your pain!! I had an Afghan Hound that ate every thing! I had roasted a whole chicken with potatoes and carrots in one of those cook in bags, we ate the chicken and stuff but the carcass was still in the bag on the counter to be put in the trash, quick as a blink he jumped up grabbed it off the counter and snuck off with it. He ate the entire thing! bag, chicken carcass and all. All in one gulp it seemed.
Well we were very worried and followed him around and lo and behold a couple days later he was out in the yard trying to do his business and have a bit of a problem. My husband had to put on some plastic gloves and lend assistance!! It was the entire bag still in one piece. No sign of the chicken LOL

I had one of my Great Danes that would eat the rocks that were below the bbq grill where the grease would drip down on them, no matter how much we tried to cover that up she dug till she got those rocks and ate them. Never a problem she would pass them.

That same Afghan hound had got loose from the original owner and gone trash can hopping, had apparently eaten a large wad of aluminum foil. Well that was a problem because it will not pass and will not deteriorate quickly. In fact this is how I became the owner of that dog, my vet called me and asked if I could take it on that the current owner traveled and just could not deal with the dog. I said sure. We ended up having to give him special digestive enzyme pills to help break down the foil, his other bad habit was drinking toilet water and I had the blue cleaner stuff in my toilets, well that nearly killed him, it ate holes in his stomach. I had no idea he was drinking in there. But to this day I will never put anything in my toilets again I had no idea that stuff was so dangerous
Long story short he lived to be a very old dog and ate many more things in his long life including an entire Christmas ham and an entire Christmas Turtle Cheesecake! and a shoe or 2. And survived testicular cancer and the removal of um them.

Dusty may be waiting until he can bring it back up. Our first Westie swallowed my diamond ring that had come off while I was shampooing him. (I didn't KNOW he had; filed an insurance claim, chose a new ring, etc.) About three weeks later we came home to find Charlie sitting in the kitchen smiling over my fur-entwined ring, which he'd thrown up. Our vet said a dog would keep in his stomach until it got 'wrapped' so he could more safely bring it up.

First of all, thanks for all the stories (Ravencajun, you are a saint to take in that Afghan, and I'm glad he found you!). I'm not offended by any of the jokes--like I said we've been saying the same things.

Dusty is just a little guy, only 12# , so that's why I'm so concerned. After our morning walk, still no timer. I have palpated his stomach and it doesn't seem to be tender and his vital signs to me (who is not an animal vet by any means) seem normal.

My final guests have just left, so I think I'm going to call the vet and get him in for an xray and see where to go from there. Thanks for all your concerns, and I'll keep you posted.

Sleeper, thank goodness you have a sense of humor. Sometimes that is what gets us through very difficult situations.

Advice from my vet when the dog swallowed half, about 2 feet, of canvas leash.

Dose with mineral oil for 3 days! It will coat the stool and object and let it pass out naturally.

Sure enough, on day 4 he pooped out a red leash, all in one long piece. Even the buckle!

Pkramer, wish I would have known about that (at least to try) before he had his surgery. Cannot believe your dog did that, you must have been freaking out. Glad it all came out well in the end, pun intended. Thanks for the tip, I'll make sure I get some mineral oil to keep on hand, Just in case.

How do you get a dog to drink mineral oil?

I tried putting some olive oil in the cat's wet food because I heard that is good for fur balls. None of them would touch their food.

My daughter once needed mineral oil and we used Hershey syrup-can't for dogs but a little gravy or broth would work. Good to know about the oil for dog isuues. Might need that one day!
