vannie, if it was chocolate fudge, Leroy could be more than sick. Chocolate in large amounts can kill a dog. If you possibly can, at least call a vet tonight for advice!

Yep, but not fudge! The dog we had before these 2 brats used to wait for the kids to go to school the day after Halloween and would raid their candy! Kids always left the bag of candy on the bed or the floor in their rooms. She once got a King sized Butterfinger! This was a little doxie that lived to the ripe old age of 19!
DB and DSIL had a dog that would eat anything chocolate! I took over some Better Than Sex cake once, they weren't home so I just went in and sat it on the table.(didn't know the dog loved sweets) They got home and all 4 peices were gone and plate still on the table. Another time he ate Hershey's Kisses a full bag and yet another time he got a box of Russel Strover candy! It was still wrapped and he got it open and ate the entire box!

I always thought it was the bittersweet chocolate that was so bad for dogs, but I don't know of course.

I can tell you that once my DH, who didn't know any better, shared a large chocolate Easter bunny with our cocker spaniel Buffy. Poor Buffy got sooooooooo distended and gassy and was blowing smelly toots for hours.

It was not pleasant and DH was in the doghouse that year.

DOGS AND the Danger of CHOCOLATE which includes your own Dog!

Give chocolate to loved ones, and you could end up poisoning them. That is, if the loved one is your pet dog.

Even small amounts of Theo bromine, an ingredient in chocolate, can cause vomiting and restlessness in pets. Larger doses can be fatal. While most pet owners expect a dog to develop an upset stomach after eating a large amount of chocolate, few realize its danger or toxic potential.

The lethal dose of Theo bromine depends on the size of the dog and the type of chocolate. Ounce for ounce, baking chocolate has six to nine times as much of the substance as milk chocolate does.

Estimates of the smallest amounts that can be fatal are:
4 ounces of milk chocolate or 1/2 ounce of baking chocolate for small dogs, such as Chihuahuas and toy poodles.
8 ounces of milk chocolate or 2 ounces of baking chocolate for medium-sized dogs, like cocker spaniels and dachshunds.
8 ounces of milk chocolate or 4 ounces of baking chocolate for large dogs, including collies and Labrador retrievers.
Cats have much different eating habits and seldom are poisoned by chocolate.
While a very small amount of chocolate may not harm some dogs, it's safest to avoid giving it to them at all. If an accident occurs, a veterinarian should be consulted. Treatment may require inducing vomiting, stabilizing the animal's heartbeat and respiration, controlling seizures and slowing the absorption of Theo bromine. If the animal already is comatose, its stomach may need to be pumped.

Theo bromine does not completely leave the dogs system, as do some foods, my research informs me that Theo Bromine has a half life of 17.5 hours. This means that half of it has gone in 17.5 hours; in 35 hours another half of the half that was remaining will have gone. We can go on and on forever and ever getting less and less, to be silly about it, it never gets to zero!

There always has to be something left for there to be a half of something. Its like a radio wave/signal travelling into space, it will reduce by half over a given distance, it repeats this time and again, but it never gets to zero. Trying to find it after a time will be difficult then impossible of course, as with Theo bromine.
So we have a time factor to consider also apart from a safe amount, its important to remember this on behalf of your dog,,, better still donÂt give your dog chocolate...............

My friend overlooked a box of chocolates on her coffee table and went out, leaving her dog alone. When she got back, the candy was gone, including some of the wrappers.

Poor dog was very sick, and she took him to the vet. This was 2-3 years ago and I can't remember all the details, but the vet bills were tremendous, and the dog only gets a certain kind of expensive food now.

Guess it doesn't have the same effect on all dogs.

My sis got married on Thanksgiving Day in the late 50's & back then all that was served at the reception, was cake--so my mom baked 2 Turkeys & was going to have T sandwiches for the peeps at our house after the reception---Mom put them on the back porch to keep them cold---duh--our 2 cats completely destroyed them! Poor mom!!

A guy I worked with was having a big FB party & was serving a ham & all the trimmings at half time--His wife put all the food out & went down to watch the game----Dang dog had the ham & almost all the food all over the floor by half time! LOL

Yes, I can relate. You can never be too careful with a big dog. They can reach lots of stuff. This week Sparky somehow got a hold of my baking chocolate. It must have fallen out of the pantry when the kids got something. I knew the box was almost empty-I think 1-2 squares. I knew after looking online that it wouldn't be fatal for a 82# dog in that amount, but I expected him to be sick. Nothing happened. No vomiting or diarrhea. He was quite lucky. I think when I replace the chocolate, I'll freeze it for safe-keeping. I know its the worst type of chocolate for a dog to eat.

Many years ago, our dog Lucky grabbed a bunch of fortune cookies off the coffee table while I was at work. I came home to plastic outer wrappers and still intact fortunes laying on the carpet. Another time she took a box of chocolate rum balls from the Bahamas I had been saving for MONTHS and ate them all!

I used to have a catahoula that you couldn't turn your back on ever...when food was around. She would wolf down anything and never taste it.

I use to work with a girl that told the funniest story about her dog - she was a little house dog named Prissy and my friend had bought some of those hard, round solid red and solid green candies and had them in a bowl and Prissy got into them. When my friend got home from work, there sat Prissy with those colored hard candies stuck all over her - she said it looked like she was decorated. lol

Yes just last week Eddie helped himself to my powered dounts I had left on Brians night stand in the 5th wheel....and decided he would eat them on my nice polo comfortor....so I had to take it to the laundry as white powder does not blend well with navy red yellow white...the bum.........................Stacy

Our dog of long ago, a german shepard-wolf mix, was so smart and she loved turkey. I had de-boned the holiday bird and put the meat on a platter covered with plastic wrap and put in in the fridge. The next morning I opened the frig and all there was, was an empty platter, and we had one very, not hungrey dog. I'm not sure, but I think when I looked at her she just burped. LOL

My dog Shilo ate an entire box of See's candy that I had forgotten to put away after coming home from work. I had put all the boxes and gifts on the couch when I came in and then went upstairs to do something....well I came down and she had the biggest smile on her face, (in fact she smiled for days after that) and all the wrappers were left in the box but all the chocolates were gone! She lived a long happy life and I learned a valuable lesson.

Earlier this week I went to the supermarket and bought all the chocolate goodies .... 3 boxes of chocolates, 5 boxes of scorched almonds, 3 bags of choc coins and one box of After Eight mints. I hid them in a big box (crockpot size) on a low shelf in the pantry ... bad move! DH came home Tues night and found gold foil from the bags of coins all over the floor! I put a heavy weight on top of the box and felt secure in the knowlegde that she couldn't possibly move the weight, lift the box lid and cause any more havoc ... wrong move! While we were at work yesterday she had herself another little party! DS got home first and text me to say there was scorched almonds, after dinner mints and a huge amount of confetti sized cardboard packaging all over the kitchen floor!!!! I don't think she's actually consumed alot of the chocolate (luckily!) but she's torn alot of the packaging - two of her favourite passtimes has always been shredding cardboard and dis-embowling soft toys!

Now that box is up on the HIGHEST shelf in the pantry with what remains of the goodies! And I have to brave the supermarket again to replace what's gone .... GRRRR!
