Ornaments from the 2010 party- 3 photos

Using frosting, I made little acorns by attaching hershey kisses to the bottom of a mini nilla wafer. More frosting for the stem. Took forever to set up, even in a warm, dry house. IF I ever make these again (and they look better than they taste) I would use melted chocolate as my glue.

One of the crazier people in our swap group crocheted these big hot pads for everyone, they were the hit of the party! I think she made 24 of them. It's a local party, we all bring food and 24 ornies and swap, it's the highlight of my holiday season. We always have so much fun.

All the ornies were cute this year- the monogramed feather balls,, the stitched piece under it (she did about 5 or 6 different scenes) the aluminum wire star or peace sign with dangling crystals, the laser cut cross with glitter and ribbon, my little reindeer bag, an embossed cardinal, a laser cute 3D snowflake, a shiny star with a bead wrap, tiny red mittens that go with a piece from last year, a gingerbread man, a tin that says "to all my flaky friends" that is filled with snow flakes,a tiny, glittery aqua blue frosted cupcake with a red cherry on top that is to DIE for, (I need a better photo of it, this does not do it justice, she had them all in a glass cake carrier, it was precious!) a puffed star made from a strip of paper, a string of bells made from communion cups, a button wreath, a laser cut photo frame snowflake, a soldered cross of flat blue marbles, a catholic medallion dangle and a prize my group won for decorating a lady to look like a reindeer. :) That was a hoot, we stuffed ballons into panty hose for her antlers and then she stuffed extra ballons under her shirt and into the back of her pants so she had this enormously exaggerated bust and butt- stuck a red bow on her nose and we were WINNERS!

It was great fun- good food, lovely women, and 2 little dogs who got into my ornaments and had them strewn around, trying to get to the chocolate inside! We started calling my reindeer ornies "dog spit ornaments". lol I didn't get home until 11:30 which is really late for me! And in keeping with the deer theme, I saw about 20 deer driving home. They were freaking me out, running across the road, acting like they wanted to jump back out in front of me. I don't think I went more than 40 mph all the way home.

WOW!! That looks like it would be so fun how long have you all been doing this??

I love the acorn/kiss cookie~~I am going to show that to my DD to do at my GDS preschool Harvest Feast next year~~you say you would use melted choco as glue~~to attach the kiss to the wafer?? Then frosting for the stem or melted choco for the stem???

Early this morning the sun was bright (finally) and glinted off the Common Grackles at the feeders. Lots of grackles now. I may not have glamorous birds but they certainly are shiny. The top grackle looked like it thought it was King of the World. For all I know, maybe it is. The grackles on the ground were shiny too. I like to have the grackles here because they eat defoliating caterpillars (other birds do too) - flying pesticides. ----------------------------------------------------- I've been having an argument with a chickadee, or maybe several chickadees. Their "dee-dee-dee" call supposedly warns against predators, with the number of "dee's" corresponding to the level of danger. Yesterday and today I heard a "dee-dee-dee-dee-dee-dee-dee-dee-dee-dee" call when I went out to fill the feeders. I find this enormously insulting since I'm feeding the little brutes, so I'm trying to call back a short "dee-dee" every time I hear the long "dee" call. It seems to be working, or maybe they're just amused, because the string of "dees" is getting shorter. Claire (who really needs some spring)

As I recall, the stiffener was made by Aleene's, right, Jenni? I couldn't find it anywhere around here so Jenni helped me out. *hugging on my buddy's neck* I think you can find it online, though, the bottle is now white and pink, I think. I've also read about people using liquid starch, but I didn't try it. The biggest thing is- be sure the stiffener is completely dry before you take the balloon out, or it will collapse. I had that happen a couple of times, so I stuck another balloon inside the mess and blew it back up and then wet it again and let it dry completely again, and salvaged it. Kudzu- I nearly gave up during my first star, I just couldn't figure out the 3-D part of the star, but once I did I felt like such a doofus, lol. I guess I don't read instructions well, I do better with videos. Thanks for looking and admiring, ladies!

Thanks, ladies! Here is how the party works- One woman hosts the party- she sends out invitations, puts up her tree with ornaments from years past, cleans her house, etc. (She has the hardest job!) She provides the cups, plates, silverware, drinks, and a couple of snacks or dishes. She also provides many different serving platters and has her table ready to hold all the different foods that the ladies will bring. She invites 23 other women. Each woman is to bring 24 ornaments that she made by hand and a dish of their choice. They bring the ornies wrapped or loose, in a bucket or bag or on a tray, whatever, and puts them under the tree. Once everyone is there, we all get a drink (punch, soda, wine, eggnog, water) and then fix a plate of yummy goodies. We sit in the LR and eat and visit. Then we usually play some kind of Christmas game. THEN, she draws names and we hand out our ornaments, telling a story about them, or giving tips on how they were made, or why we picked that ornament to make, something. Everyone oooohs and aaaaaahs over the ornament and starts a pile by their chair. Then when they have handed out their ornie, they can use their bucket or bag to hold all the new ones they are getting from their friends. Once that is all done, we usually mill around more, visit, do some private trading with leftover ornies, eat more of the desserts and then finally leave, usually around 10 PM. We started at 6, so it's 4 fun-filled hours. I always bring Woody home a plate full of yummy treats, as his reward for staying home alone with the dogs while I have so much fun. :) It's great fun.

I agree with Janie, make some peanuts using Sculpy or paper mache, Dances. I hope Elmo stays safe this year, yikes! Make sure you unplug those lights when you're not around, Janie. Ideas for the peanut ornies came from pinterest. Adella- get the unsalted, roasted peanuts. Hobby Lobby has that cool yarn, it's by Yarn Bee, Chrysalis/california sister is the color, it's variegated and wild! Here's a link to the directions for the snowmen. Flamey...those ornaments are so danged cute!! I would love to get a group of ladies together here to do that! Looks and sounds like so much fun!! No wonder it's the highlight of your season!!

Lunchlady- I would use melted choc for all of it, or a mini choc chip for the stem- that frosting didn't want to get hard enough. It worked OK for glueing the kiss to the cap/wafer (24 hours) but even 12 hours wasn't long enough for the frosting stem. You can use mini Nutter Butters, too, I hear, for the cap.

I love those ornaments. They will be really cute on the tree.

I like the little acorn treats too. I wonder if there isn't a small cookie that might taste better with the kiss. I might try to make these with my kids some time.

I love seeing these every year! Where did you find so many creative friends? Many of my friends are creative, too, but most are writers or the kind of visual artists that wouldn't know what to do with a sewing machine. :-)

No (rug) hookers in your group? I seem to be the only one where I live, so I guess I'm not surprised.

Janie, I never see that lady except at the party, but I'll try to get it for you.

Susan, we used to have a hooker, but she moved away. All these ladies are friends of the hostess and they've changed over the years, if someone doesn't come for a few years in a row, she stops inviting them and finds new ones that are crafty and willing. There were 2 new ladies this year which was great- one of them made the dear little cuppy-cakes!

11:30, I guess I better get that eye appointment this week. I'm with you - I'm usually asleep long before then, not sure how I'm going to make through the NYE party we were invited to.
