Last year it was the faeries in the string balloons, remember? lol Of course you don't, I'm teasing.

Anyway, this year I decided to take it easy and do something simple. I made multi-colored Moravian Stars and hung a beaded dangle from the bottom. I sprayed the stars with clear glitter first, then attached the dangle. The stars are made from colored printer paper cut into 1/2" strips and finished, without the dangle, are about 2" tall. Not too tiny, not too big, just right.

The light has to be just right for them to look this gaudy! lol

This was last years, there were 24 of them and were a big hit at the party -

I hope they don't throw rocks at me this year! lol

I remember the faeries in the string balls and I remember you working so hard to perfect the balls!

Those were beautiful and so are the stars! Great work!

Hi Brent... thank very much for your feedback! Always nice to hear some others' opinions. Sorry about all the pics... I knew there were lots so gave fair warning in the subject heading + resized them all! :) I, too, like evergreens... but what was the deciding factor for me was that the city planted 7+ spruce outside my fence in the park already (see pic #5). Just thought it may have been a bit much for my taste. Part of the reason for the paper birches was to give some different colours (white bark + turns nice yellow in the fall). They say that birches survive in poor soil conditions... but I still think they are a bit finicky. So we'll see how they do... When I have guests we usually sit up on the deck or are in the hot tub. People generally don't venture down into the lawn area. I guess not much to look at down there yet until stuff starts growing up and filling in. The river rock was actually an extension of the rock that I put in along the south side of the house last year... more for functionality than anything else. I just found that the south side of the house was frying the grass... no amount of watering would save it so cut it out and installed the decorative rock. I kind of like the effect of the rock and the bluestem... reminds me of the cottage. But of course different strokes for different folks. The kids factor could be an issue sometime down the road (gulp). I'm a single guy for now with no kids... but you never know that can always change...! Leitneria floridana has been hardy through 2 winters for me here in z4a. The first winter was wimpy, but last winter got down below -25F, although not for a long period as it normally would. No flowers buds priduced yet. Mag. sieboldii is hit or miss here, depending on the seed source, but I have had one since 1995, and it blooms and fruits regularly. Decorating Unfinished Basement for Teen New Years Eve Party

Thanks for the advice - drywall is not an option right now with this timeframe...our son is in college and our daughter is a junior in high school so at this point, we won't be finishing the basement. We do have a bonus media/pool table room on the first floor so this is the usual teen hangout --it's just not big enough for dancing. I did buy some silver tarps and some beige drop cloths to see which one will work better. I was planning on stapling them to the floor joists above. There are some hvac ducts and pipes that we will have to work around so we would need to cut the material to fit around these. I was thinking of trimming this out with duct tape if we use the tarps and with patterned burlap ribbon if we use the drop cloths. Are we safe to have the tarps or fabric next to the hvac ducts? Found a cool large silver ornament that looks like a disco ball on sale at Hobby Lobby and bought 5 strings of white lights so far. The main problem is hiding the storage area. Thanks, ladies. Yes, it's a lot of fun and it seems like the ladies are really outdoing themselves every year. I do have an idea for next years ornie, in fact I have almost everything I need to make them. I saw on FlickR some ornaments that look like those candied fruit slices, you know the ones you see in the nice candy stores, they look like a slice of orange, or lemon, lime, etc. They make them in citrus colors and red.... well, these were felt, 2 colors in each one, like dark green/lime green or dark yellow/bright yellow, etc, and covered with "sugar", which was a square crystal glitter. Simple, but VERY CUTE. I was thinking of making a set of 3 for each lady. I bought all the stuff to make them in case my ships didn't turn out. So I'll be making those, and I won't wait until early December, either! lol bRAT Kat- those are his little mittened hands you're seeing, ya perv! lol It's not a good photo, I realize that. He is absolutely the most charming, old-fashioned little guy, we all flipped over him. The 2 girls on either side of me, their guys had glittery felt shoes- mine has plain. I told them their little guys were gay. lolol And their little scarves are so cute, a tiny button holds it in place. He is perfection. I recommend these kinds of parties to everyone. What a great way to get together, have lots of fun and good food and be creative AND get a huge assortment of ornies. Oh. I don't do a tree anymore, I'm sad to say. Too many cheesy cats in this house that would tear it up. I keep some of the ornaments and share some with friends. I have a lovely assortment in boxes! lol Thanks, WC, about the cat. I hope to hear from the vet this morning that I can pick him up. Fingers crossed!

I wasn't around much last year, so I am glad you posted both this year!! Your party is going to be a great hit! I like the idea of beads on the bottom of the stars!

Thanks, ladies! These were so fast and easy, I totally feel like a cheater!

The string things are made from crochet thread wound around a balloon, then dipped into fabric stiffener and then squeezed off, because it's thick. Then hang them overnight to dry and drip, then puncture the balloon and pull it out. Then I cut a hole in them and wrapped the cut edge with twill tape applied with hot glue, ow. Ow. OW! lolol Then I tied my little "Felt Wee Folk" faeries into them, one each. I needed a way to present the faeries that was fun and unusual and the string balloons were made possible by Jenni CA who kindly mailed me the stiffener and string. They took forever to make though, like 3 whole days, if not longer. lol They were about the size of a small spaghetti squash.

I do remember! But what I forgot was...I wanted to make snowmen with my grandson with balloons and strings but I forgot all about it *blush*
Oh, and honey, wow, I made ONE of those stars just the other day...so hard...it was my first one, and I made it from an old tape measure, and it wasn't quite long enough. But I had to keep going back looking at the photographs to even get it as far as I did. I asked my husband to look at it and tell me how to do it, and he looked but said "no"..........lolol
So hat's off to you, those are GREAT!

Oh the fairies!!!!!!!!! I sure remember them. I have the one you sent me in my sewing room and she twirls in the breezes every day. I just love her.
When we cleaned out my MIL's house all those bottles of stiffener were headed for the trash and for some reason I got them out and brought them home. Boy am I glad I did. I never in a million years would have used that stuff. I was so glad you had a use for it.
This years ornaments are just as spectacular!! The colors are great!

As I recall, the stiffener was made by Aleene's, right, Jenni? I couldn't find it anywhere around here so Jenni helped me out. *hugging on my buddy's neck* I think you can find it online, though, the bottle is now white and pink, I think.

I've also read about people using liquid starch, but I didn't try it. The biggest thing is- be sure the stiffener is completely dry before you take the balloon out, or it will collapse. I had that happen a couple of times, so I stuck another balloon inside the mess and blew it back up and then wet it again and let it dry completely again, and salvaged it.

Kudzu- I nearly gave up during my first star, I just couldn't figure out the 3-D part of the star, but once I did I felt like such a doofus, lol. I guess I don't read instructions well, I do better with videos.

The stars are cute. I tried to make those before but I guess I don't have the patience for them. I think I managed to get one done and tossed the stuff aside. I love the fairie ornaments. those are really cute.

Thank you so much! I LOVED making the faeries, I must admit. Loved everything about them, from accumulating all the "ingredients" as my DH would say, down to making those messy balloons. It will be hard to ever find anything to make again that I will enjoy half as much. They were just right up my crafting alley.
