Marshall's Dept Store Coming to Canada

I have no idea what Marshalls is. 6 locations are opening in Canada, 4 around Toronto.

Are they any good? More important, are they affordable? LOL

If they're like the Marshall's around here, they're virtually the same as TJ Maxx (same company): heavily discounted nice clothing, along with bedding, some kitchenware, home decor items, bath & body, etc. I'm a big fan of both stores.

mainly at the Goodwill. If I get giftcards for special occasions, I ask that they be for Cotton Ginny Plus or Penningtons. I always love a good bargain and find some great ones at the GW. I want to buy from Lane Bryant catalogue but can't order from Canada, trust me I have tried. When I go to the States, I like to shop at Dress Barn.

One had vinyl by the yard so you could make your own casual tablecloths. A store in Paris even has a hardware store/garden center downstairs. Francypants, was this some fancy kind of vinyl? Because almost every hardware store in Canada has vinyl by the metre for tablecloths. And many stores have garden centres. I admit I was impressed with the French hypermarche when we lived in Europe in the 70's - I had never seen a store that large. While many of these ideas would be very nice most would likely raise prices which most consumers won't tolerate. I've had a store and returns always reduce profits and sometimes even completely negate profits. How many of us are willing to pay more so some people can return a lot of what they buy. Personally I almost never return anything. I just don't buy things I'm not sure of.

As a former seamstress, sewing instructor, and clerk/manager of an independent fabric store in California I must chime in here. Just my opinion:but when the department stores and Walmarts and KMarts and everyone else, started buying cheap garments from outside our country...yes, it became less costly to purchase than to sew. And as we made those purchases, the quality has greatly improved. But, so has the cost of fabric today and I believe that there will be a resurgence of people sewing clothing as those cheap prices sort of level out the playing field. I do more quilting now and prices of GOOD fabrics has really increased (price of growing cotton and processing it has increased all over the world) and in my travels here in the west there is an abundance of quality Quilt stores and they are increasingly moving toward accessory like items and fabrics.When "cheap labor" disappears, and quality suffers, sewing and seamstresses will come back. Maybe our society has to change too, as in do we all NEED bulging closets? And Why do I see so many items of clothing in yard sales and thrift stores?

Elmer, sometimes your responses reflect a lot of assumptions that are just not true. Not everyone lives in SoCal where cities have their own zip code, the post office is centrally located and their box is just outside their door. We are rural and we live on a "country road". Our boxes sit on the road where anyone can get to them. Usually people don't bother them but we actually caught someone, a neighbor no less, going into ours after just moving in. Our "village" has a zip code that belongs to a community 10-15 miles north of us. It's in a direction opposite to where we shop, work and live; ie inconvenient to use. We use another office closer to us for services and have kept a box there to avoid use of our home's box as much as possible. Over the years, we've had to spend several hundred dollars to replace hit/destroyed boxes and pay PO Box fees, which we shouldn't have to do in order to receive mail. I know all the people at the office where our PO Box is and other than getting the wrong mail now and then, we've never had any issues there. I'm well aware that it's beneficial to have a good relationship with the folks who provide services to us. Over the course of the past 10 years, I've made numerous trips to our post office to meet our delivery person. I was always told she wasn't available by that Post Master. I've left my number and asked if she could call me, but never received a call either. He seemed to block any efforts made to reconcile our situation, not just with me but with other neighbors as well. BTW, I was raised in Huntington Beach. I used to live 2 blocks from my mother and we even had the same mail carrier of whom we were both friendly with. When one of us would mail the other something as simple as a birthday card, it would still take over a week to be received. Go figure!

Jasdip, Marshalls is 10x's better than Winners! But it is hit and miss, like Winners but you can score some amazing deals on high quality stuff. Unless of course, they maintain the same type of merchandise. Like Walmart isn't as good here as in the USA.

I am a huge TJ Maxx!!

Target is trying to come to Canada again. They will probably take Zeller's over. The Hudson's Bay company which is now American owned :-( is in partnership with Target.

I can't leave the states without a visit to Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Target and Olive Garden.

It wouldn't surprise me if we see Marshalls slowly take Winners over and move into their locations. I think Homesense would stay the same, I hope.

They sell the exact same merchandise as Home Goods and TJMaxx. Hope you like not-high-end household stuff.

I have found high end at Marshall's too, but they are infrequent. Nevertheless, I shop there regularly.

Gosh, I sure wish we'd get one here. I used to buy a large portion of my work clothes at Marshall's. Of course, this was 16 years ago. It is like TJ Maxx but Marshall's store seems a lot cleaner and more like a department store than TJM--at least the ones I frequented were.

Cheaper than a department store for sure. I just loved Marshall's! But I don't work anymore so have no need for dresses/suits.

Marshall's, Home Goods, and TJ Maxx are all owned by the same company - TJX.

I have been able to add many pieces to my Lenox Butterfly Meadow pattern of dishes. Sometimes they will just have one or two plates or bowls, other times, different pieces like napkin rings, trivets, dessert plates, bowls, platters, etc. Nothing appears to be wrong with them, not 2nds. If they are, they are usually marked.

There's a mall by me that at various times has one or more of the TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Home Goods stores. I've been in all three at one time or another - Marshalls was my least favorite. It was kind of a big, junky mess. I liked TJ Maxx better - maybe because it was a smaller junky mess. Home Goods seems nicer but it's pretty much the same stuff that used to be at TJ Maxx. I bought more things at TJ Maxx than the others - unfortunately they closed it.

I've been to a Marshalls and won't be shopping at it if it comes to Calgary. I hate Winners and Marshalls is worse. It's like a second hand store to me.

Debby, I find it amazing that people love Winners. I hate their clothing, but do shop there and HomeSense for Kitchen ware.
