Almond milk

Anyone try it?

Our daughter brought me a half gal of it. In one of our conversations I had mentioned I was curious about it and wish it was sold in Qt size. Is it ever good. slightly thick, creamy and slightly sweet. Hubs wouldn't try it. He likes a glass of chocolate milk with his lunch, which I usually mix with chocolate powder. Yesterday i mixed the choc powder in the almond milk, and he asked if I had bought a different brand, it was so good and he liked it because it has a better taste and was a little thicker. I also thought it would be a good substitute for egg nog in Tom & Jerrys.

What is it about men and trying new things?? My dad was like that. Fortunately, my DH was not.

Yes, I like almond milk. But for coffee and tea, I like something less flavorful, so I use Silk soymilk.

Unsweetened would be the healthiest choice, I am assuming, but if you are a dairy lover, and are unsure of the switch, I would recommend trying something with a little bit of sweetness to it first. Though I have not had unsweetened almond, we have bought the unsweetened soy, and it is definitely a different kind of taste compared to regular milk. Dairy milk to me has a bit of sweetness to it. Likewise, if you are used to 2%, I would say almond or soy is closer in consistency than rice milk. Rice milk to me is similar to skim milk because it is thinner. But like I said, we really do enjoy all of the kinds! Also everybody tastes things differently, so try a few different kinds before you decide what you like. Even from brand to brand it is different. I really dislike generic soy milks. As much as I would like to pay less, there is a big difference in taste and quality, IMHO.

Save money and make your own. Almond milk is a good source for calcium. Other non-dairy milks you can easily make yourself: oat, rice, other varieties of nuts, cashews (which is a fruit, not a nut), hemp, sesame, sunflower, pumpkin seed.... A great little book on the subject is "Not Milk...NUT MILKS!" by Candia Lea Cole. Recipes in the book include: Apple Ginger Almond Milk, Banana Almodine Milk, Mellow Carob Cocoa Almond Milk (a great recipe to use 100% Cacao Cocoa), Mocha Mint Almond Milk, and many others. It actually has a fairly long shelf-life, even several days or a week after the sell-by or use-by date, as long as it's kept cold. But if you leave it at room temperature for a prolonged period of time, all bets are off. It will go "off" more quickly the more often and the longer it's left at room temperature. If you are only needing almond milk as a substitute for a small amount of cow's milk in muffins, you could use water or juice instead. Another option is to make an alternative milk as needed, which could mean a small amount of almond milk, oat milk (made with oatmeal and water), rice milk, cashew milk, whatever you have on hand.... All you need is a blender, water and a strainer or a Nut Milk Bag. But homemade almond milk has a very short storage life - two to three days. I keep powdered coconut milk on hand (Wilderness Family Naturals), and that would also be a time saver for a milk alternative - it mixes in warm water and you can make it as weak or rich as you need it. I use reconstituted powdered coconut milk to ferment homemade coconut milk kefir, which is a great substitute for yogurt. Reconstituted powdered coconut milk also works for making pudding, added to smoothies..... -Grainlady

I don't believe in consuming dairy, and I avoid soy, so I use a lot of nut milk. It's easy and cheap to make your own. Just blend soaked almonds with water, though it works best with a high-speed blender. Or, even easier, blend a little almond butter with water and you get instant almond milk. If you make it yourself, it's even cheaper than dairy milk and so much better for you and the environment. Additionally, you still get the benefits of the live enzymes that the packaged pasturization destroys. Hemp milk is also great, and absolutely loaded with nutrition.

I am a recent convert to Almond milk! I saw it on sale and decided to try it and I was floored at how good it is and how healthy it is for you! I started out liking the low fat Almond milk original flavor. And even though it had a slightly sweet taste it still was wonderful in my whole grain cereal every morning. Then I found the "Unsweetened" Almond milk at Trader Joe's and I was in heaven! I don't like milk with a sweet taste and always used fat free milk, but no more. I'm an "Almond" believer now. lol

I bought a half gallon of chocolate almond milk. I drank a glass after dinner as a dessert. I liked it but haven't bought it again.

I've never tried it. Is it madefrom almonds? If so how do they "milk" them lol

We love it! I buy the vanilla flavor. Its even better then soy milk.

My daughter and I use it, as we both have troubles with regular milk. I use it mainly for cereal, it is expensive, the brand I like is about $5 for a 2 litre carton. I don't mind the taste at all. :o)

Nut milks are just nuts and water in a high speed blender. You can make your own cheaply and easily if you have one! So much healthier than cow milk.

The first time I tried it, I was scared to take a sip. I had the vanilla one. It was surprisingly good!!

I have been wanting to try it but on a tight budget if I don't like it I'd probably have to throw it away.LOL I have wondered about giving it to the twins. Would it be OK for them to drink? I make them a smoothie with vanilla yogurt and milk and either chocolate or strawberry syrup every morning.They would probably love the taste!

Unless they have nut allergies, I don't see why it wouldn't be safe. It's just nuts and water and flavoring.

I don't know where you live, Chi83, but here in No. Mn, the price of nuts is very high, so it wouldn't be cheaper to make my own. Because I had mentioned a curiosity about Almond milk, my very thoughtful daughter brought a 1/2 gal to try. I will buy it again, from time to time, but not as a regular purchase like reg. 1% milk.

I could not find it in my regular grocery.

Is it sold in the fresh dairy section or in cans like evaporated milk?

It's in the cold milk "dairy" section. Try another store if its not there, it will be next to the Soy milk.
