Need Info on Setting Up a Seller eBay Account

I have a friend that's wanting to start selling on eBay. Everything has changed many times over since I sat up my account in '99! She kind of look through the set up, but she says she HAS to give all her bank info, etc and also HAS to set up a PayPal account. She's uncomfortable with doing that.

Does she have to do that, or is there a way around it. She already has a Buyer's account.

I've been using Paypal and Ebay for years without any problems and they have my banking information along with a credit card in case there's a problem, which there never has been. Both sites are extremely secure. Probably more secure than shopping with your atm card or credit card at the local grocery store.

She needs to set up a Premier account. She will need to give her checking account info as well as a CC #. I would suggest that the CC she gives be used exclusively for eBay/PayPal and have a very low credit limit...maybe $200.
If she can, she should open a new checking account and only keep a little over the minumum required balance in it.
As long as she doesn't respond to spoof mails asking her to click on a link to "update" her user information, she'll be safe.

Hi all, Love brugs. I had a greenhouse years ago and grew about 5 or 6 of them. I purchased one last year about three feet tall but didn't bloom. Will this year as it grew to about 6ft. Then a nursery owner gave me one which she planted in the ground and was about 8ft tall. It was loaded with dbl blooms that start out white then change to orange. I don't know the name of this one either. I'd love to have more of them but don't have the room in the house as the two I have are in 20 inch pots so what I was wondering is if they could be kept in a cool basement in complete darkness or would they not survive in complete darkness? I see alot of under-coloured neos on our Australian Ebay, or in my opinion anyway, but I think this only affects the seller really, because it doesn't attract the buyers that a good coloured gallery pic would. Then again, I see some terribly vibrant, photo shopped gallery pics, with inflated prices to match, and unfortunately people are sucked in and buy them. (I was one, way back when) and lo and behold, how disappointing when your plant doesn't perform. At least if you buy them thinking they are green, you aren't being fed rubbish, and might get a surprise if you forget to fertilise and grow them in a bit more light! I sell on Ebay on occasion, and always have a pic of the sale plant, but the sale plant isn't always in top colour,as I usually do start them off in shadier conditions and with a little fert. How many buyers get good coloured neos/Bills and put them in the shade anyway? Why has my plant turned green? Luckily they can always come to this forum for expert advice on how to get the best from their bromeliads. Anyway, thats just my opinion, but I agree, it was sad to see the plants not at their best colour, but maybe the seller isn't educated about the conditions needed? I regularly buy from Ebay australia, as its often the only way i can stave off my cravings (lack of local bromeliad sellers. I usually check feedback, and have made good friends with a few sellers, so am getting a network of good sellers and info on those that aren't. Yes! Ol' soft heart here sometimes follows ebay sales merely in hopes that some items "find a nice home." I am so happy when they finally get a bid! Now, I'm an intelligent woman (or used to be), and I need to remind myself that a) these are *things* and are incapable of feeling rejected, and b) the seller is probably more business savvy than I am, as the seller is *marketing* his items for cold hard cash, whereas I give mine away to the local charity thrift shop in fervent hope that someone will be delighted with the good deal she got on my discard. Two years ago, in need of a new frying pan and not having $ to get a quality, new stainless steel one, I began researching old cast iron cookware and how to restore it. At that time, you could get rusty cast iron frying pans cheaply on ebay. I bought a couple, restored them, and have been very happy with them. Unfortunately, now I find it hard to resist "rescuing" rust-encrusted cast iron pieces offered on ebay. They seem to cry "Save me! Save me!" I just hate to see a piece of Americana lost to the dump. My BIL snickers at my cast iron folly, but I now have a nice assortment of cooking pieces, one a dutch oven dating to the mid to late 19th century.

Susan, glad I could be of help. In the description of the classes I teach, I make mention of the material I cover and the things I don't....taking digital photos being one of those things. If they don't have a digital camera I suggest they take regular pictures and have them developed on a CD. I also suggest you have a list of computer skills a student must have before enrolling for your class. It has made my life a lot easier by screening the students beforehand. I do tell my students to use the software that comes with the camera to download the photos and I ask them to create a MY EBAY PHOTOS folder in MY PICTURES and save all of their pics in that folder, being sure to give them descriptive names rather than the generic #'s. I simply insert my photos by Browsing to the folder they're saved in and inserting from there. I can do several at a time quite easily this way. I don't use the Self Hosting option.

I was going to say what Mona said - tell her to be careful of the emails she receives that say they are from ebay - if she is going to get mail from ebay it will show on her ebay account in her messages as WELL as in her email.
I wouldn't set up an ebay acct myself these days without Paypal, too much hassle without and too much time wasted waiting for cheques/money orders to arrive in the mail.
I too have been ebaying for years and haven't had an issue with my bank acct or my credit card registered there - just have to pay attention to what's being billed and contact ebay right away if something odd shows up.
I have received over the years probably 10 emails that say so and so has bid on your item such and such, where no item exists that I have listed. I have received over the years probably at least 10 fake emails saying please click here to update your ebay information. I always send the email (just forward it) to ebay first, they let me know if it's them or not. If it isn't them, they use their resources to track the sender.
Another good ebay defense is to change your password regularly and make it tricky - I change mine about once a month and always use letters and numbers so it's harder for the hackers...never had a problem there either.
The only problem I've ever had with scammers in my life was way back when we had dial up internet someone scammed my phone number off my modem, and made an $800 phone call to Africa - but the phone company was well aware of that scam and I didn't have to pay for it.
Country, if your friend needs help that someone else can't answer about ebay, feel free to tell her she can contact me - i've sold hundreds of items all over the world (and bought a good number as well) - happy to help if she needs it.
