Here's my menu for Christmas Dinner:

Vegetable and dip platter

steaks for myself and DH

chicken breasts for the children/boyfriends

mashed potatoes and gravy

green beans

asparagus and sugar snap peas

Apple pie for dessert

We were thinking of Prime Rib for our Christmas at home on New Year's Day, but we're having a pretty huge group. The price might rule it out.

Shrimp with cocktail and tarter sauce, veggies and dip, chex mix, & bleu cheese ball with crackers before. Then Baked ham, aug gratin potatoes, baked squash, garlic green beans, fruit salad, rolls and Apple turnovers with ice cream for dessert.

Since it was just the two of us (DB and me), we went out, which is our tradition on such holidays. It was difficult to find a place open (except near the beach), but many places in the Marina had brunch specials, and so we ending up going to the Warehouse Restaurant in Marina Del Rey. I had a 12 oz. (small size) prime rib au jus (medium rare) with horseradish sauce, garlic mashed potatoes, and green beans. Kevin had turkey breast with cornbread stuffing and gravy, green beans, mashed potatoes, and cranberry sauce. We also had hot dinner rolls. There was so much food that we took half of it back with us. I saved the extremely rare part of the prime rib and will have it tonight. We had our meal at 1:00 p.m., and for dinner we had spicy chicken tamales (which Kevin bought from someone at work - made by a co-worker's mother!) with green salsa, broccoli rice, bean dip, guacamole, and tortilla chips. We follow the tamales at Christmas tradition, and these were especially good - much better than what I have bought at stores, although she was a bit heavy handed with the chilies, which is why we needed all the side dishes! The Warehouse Restaurant was a lot of fun, and even though it is extremely close to my house (and we drive by it every time we go to Ralphs supermarket), we had never been there. They have a very nice koi pond in front with a fake dock that you can walk out onto. It was very sunny while we were there, but 30 minutes after we got home, we had another downpour of rain. We have the same thing every single year and have done so for decades. If I varied it, there would be bloodshed! We'll be having lobster stew. I will go down to the lobster pound (yes, there IS one in KY - we have a UPS hub here!), and buy the frozen claws and leg meat - SO much easier than boiling up multiple lobster. I already have the Stonewall Kitchen Popover mix - used to make my own but discovered they were very sensitive to the atmosphere and not reliable - these are reliable. I've already bought the miniature cream puffs - in basement freezer. I'll buy the raspberry sorbet next week - they always sell out. I always make the lobster stew at least 3 days before Christmas Eve - it gets better as it "ages". I'll order the fresh grapefruit to be sectioned a week before Christmas and pick it up on Sat before. I'll buy the red currants at Whole Foods that week if they have them. Champagne was bought at Whole Foods weeks ago when thy had a 30% off sale! Oysters will be ordered about 10 days before Christmas Eve and picked up at 4:30 that day, already opened, but still on their shell. It's really a very easy meal with so much done ahead. Haven't figured out what I'm doing for a centerpiece this year - used cut amaryllis in pine/magnolia greenery last year,, but not sure if I can count on the cut amaryllis, even if I order it. I always use white flowers with greenery on my table. Table will be set on Fri before Christmas, as soon as my cleaner leaves. I enjoy admiring it for a few days! Got a note from the laundry in WI that it will be shipped to me in time for Christmas - they had to concentrate on the "before Thanksgiving" orders first.

Several years ago I had planned a traditional Christmas dinner... turkey and all the trimmings. We had just had a new kitchen sink installed. I started my preparations early and unfortunately discovered the sink connections had failed. I informed Mr Wonderful I would not be able to prepare dinner. After checking restaurants available I found out we had three choices.... A Japanese restaurant, a seafood restaurant at 10 PM or Denney's. We went to Denney's along with many others traveling. It wasn't a traditional dinner but the service was excellent and me met lots if people. This year we will have authentic Cornish pasties and a pumpkin cheesecake dessert. Merry Christmas to all. s

I sometimes make Seafood Gumbo for Christmas eve. Regretfully, DSIL doesn’t care for shrimp and my gumbo is full of it. For him, I might make a small pot of Chicken and Sausage gumbo. Christmas Day is spent with my sister and her family, DD, DSIL, and the kiddos, about 12 of us at table. Frequently, we have Eggs Benedict, cheese grits, fruit, Bloody Marys and Mimosas for brunch. Our evening meal is often a whole tenderloin, potatoes au gratin, asparagus or something else green, and dessert. This year, I‘m going to suggest that the tenderloin be oven-roasted with a peppercorn crust. When DSIL and DSS grill it, it is often too rare for most of us. @functionthenlook if you aren’t already set on a recipe for your Ham and Potato Casserole look at Ham, Cheese, and Potato Casserole from Leite’s Culinaria. It is sooooo good! It is basically dressed up potatoes au gratin.

I found prime rib on sale, $3.75lb! They also has #10 lb bags of russet potatoes for .88cents! I did a stock up run and there's plenty for Christmas dinner too!

Those options all sound great. We can't find any local rerstaurants open. tried to find a buffet open one Christmas, we ended up at a Chinese restaurant, just like The Christmas Story Movie. I am planning on ham for New Years Day.

The neighbors have invited us for Christmas Dinner so I'm freed from Christmas Day cooking! I'm doing a happy dance. I know she's making a roasted ham and home made mac and cheese.

I'm providing a desert. I'm making a smaller version of Grandmother's four-layer, fruit curd filled, "White Christmas Cake."

My cake will be entirely "home made" too, but will have only two layers. One topped with lemon curd, the other with orange curd. I'm preparing the fruit today.

For Christmas Eve at home, I'm fixing Wes and me a small rib roast, slathered in garlic, along with roasted asparagus and Yorkshire puddings. I'll make an apple pie since it's his favorite.

Martha's cooking school Christmas cake is very similar to what I'm making.

(If I keel over in a diabetic coma after making this cake, please know that I went happy; I love you all, and I had a very, merry and happy Christmas! LOL)

An article in today's Los Angeles Times says that most restaurants still close on Christmas except for Chinese, Jewish delis & hotel restaurants.

This year I'm doing a brunch at 1 PM instead of a dinner. We'll have baked ham, asparagus & Swiss cheese strata, mixed green salad with lemon vinaigrette dressing, breakfast graham cake, banana bread, & for dessert, carrot cake, triple chocolate cake & magic bar cookies.

We're having a standing rib roast, but I'm still wavering on the sides. Guess I'd better make up my mind, huh? They will be one each of the following:

Green beans almondine or asparagus
Yorkshire pudding or mashed potatoes and gravy or potato casserole
Crusty rolls or yeast
Pumpkin pie or the rum pound cake we bought at Sam's

Better go ask Harry his choice and go with that.

Oooh, I want Lynn's dinner--both of them! Harry wants Yorkshire pudding with the rib roast, asparagus, yeast rolls and pumpkin pie. I forgot about roasted Brussels sprouts but I'm adding them to the menu. I just love them!

We celebrate Christmas Eve, as everyone is either coming or going on Christmas day. We will be having ham, Judean's mashed potatoes, salad, and lots of sides, I'm sure. Everyone is bringing stuff. It's going to be a big gathering.....five great-grands, so that will be fun. I had to rent the senior center across the street because we just overflow my house since the grands have grown up and acquired spouses. I can hardly wait!!

The Christmas Eve menu here tends to lean toward Mexican food...I know it will include tamales and, although not Mexican, Champagne! Just gotta have tamales and Champagne after Church on Christmas Eve! I am going to my son's home on Christmas day. I have been asked to bring a "weird array" of cheeses and goodies. The meal will be a fun surprise. We had a very lovely and traditional Thanksgiving Dinner...we aren't totally "out there"...most days.

Mine will be Sunday a brunch:

Mary B's mini biscuits with homemade champagne jelly OR/AND
sweet crackers with cream cheese and champagne jelly

After we go to the lake to surprise GS with his fishing boat,
we'll come back and have dessert

rosemary olive oil cake with blueberry jam for topping OR vanilla ice cream
