Comments (43)Yes, welcome to the forum Sameboat!! I joined about 8 years ago when I was stressing over my first time hosting a holiday dinner in my new house. And I was 44 years old so NOT a new cook or hostess but I'm mostly vegetarian and my family asked for organic turkey. Now what did I know about cooking a turkey??!! Folks here held my hand and were so friendly and nice I stayed. And I am a firm believer in the school of thought that Chase mentioned, food tastes best when served in a warm, relaxing manner by a happy hostess!! There's a whole bunch of us here who are all into short cuts, low cal, low carb, high carb, store bought, "inexpensive", whatever floats your boat, no apologies!! Comments (40)Since it was just the two of us (DB and me), we went out, which is our tradition on such holidays. It was difficult to find a place open (except near the beach), but many places in the Marina had brunch specials, and so we ending up going to the Warehouse Restaurant in Marina Del Rey. I had a 12 oz. (small size) prime rib au jus (medium rare) with horseradish sauce, garlic mashed potatoes, and green beans. Kevin had turkey breast with cornbread stuffing and gravy, green beans, mashed potatoes, and cranberry sauce. We also had hot dinner rolls. There was so much food that we took half of it back with us. I saved the extremely rare part of the prime rib and will have it tonight. We had our meal at 1:00 p.m., and for dinner we had spicy chicken tamales (which Kevin bought from someone at work - made by a co-worker's mother!) with green salsa, broccoli rice, bean dip, guacamole, and tortilla chips. We follow the tamales at Christmas tradition, and these were especially good - much better than what I have bought at stores, although she was a bit heavy handed with the chilies, which is why we needed all the side dishes! The Warehouse Restaurant was a lot of fun, and even though it is extremely close to my house (and we drive by it every time we go to Ralphs supermarket), we had never been there. They have a very nice koi pond in front with a fake dock that you can walk out onto. It was very sunny while we were there, but 30 minutes after we got home, we had another downpour of rain. Comments (22)Texas_gem - Your mother was a wise lady. It's a rule I lived by once our first child was born because I could already see the demands set on by my MIL. It's a great decision to make. It's one I passed onto my niece when her first was born because knowing her mom (my ex-SIL) I knew what was going to happen. It's a rule she lives by as well. I'm not sure about the plans. The days of the huge family dinners on Christmas Day are gone as the nieces and nephews are all married with their own families (and whatever issues that may bring up on Christmas Day). Years ago I started a tradition of having a Christmas Dinner in early December just to take the angst of having to decide who to see on Christmas Day and it has worked out really well. Family is all there and we do turkey with all the trimmings. My brother is doing it this year so that's nice for me. Christmas Day is probably just the 4 of us and my MIL. Comments (19)Several years ago I had planned a traditional Christmas dinner... turkey and all the trimmings. We had just had a new kitchen sink installed. I started my preparations early and unfortunately discovered the sink connections had failed. I informed Mr Wonderful I would not be able to prepare dinner. After checking restaurants available I found out we had three choices.... A Japanese restaurant, a seafood restaurant at 10 PM or Denney's. We went to Denney's along with many others traveling. It wasn't a traditional dinner but the service was excellent and me met lots if people. This year we will have authentic Cornish pasties and a pumpkin cheesecake dessert.
