And I agree...it is ridiculous that people who make that much money try to cheat the government out of their just debts. Then, they go on the campaign trail and say that "the rich" should pay more taxes. They never seem to realize that they are "the rich", and are welcome to send the treasury as much money as they wish to help those less fortunate. I also hate that many declare bankruptcy to get out of paying their debts, and then continue to live lavish lifestyles.

Among those who have filed bankruptcy include: Stephen Baldwin, Kim Basinger, Gary Busey, Francis Ford Coppola, Walt Disney, Merle Haggard, LaToya Jackson, Don Johnson, Cyndi Lauper, Meat Loaf, Lorrie Morgan, Willie Nelson, Wayne Newton, Burt Reynolds, Debbie Reynolds, etc.

This shameful practice also applies to companies, such as Dow Corning, Eastman Kodak, Kmart, Pepsi Cola, Polaroid, Purina Mills, and many airlines.

IMO, if you file bankruptcy and later become wealthy, you should pay back those who you cheated in the bankruptcy process. The bankruptcy laws just aren't fair!

Wow I did not realize that many of the wealthy people and companies have filed bankruptcy. Doesn't it affect your credit scores? Or do they get by with whatever they do? Just wondering.

Generally, this stuff happens because the celeb (or celeb wannabe!) has "people" to take care of things. Those "people" are not always trustworthy nor do they always know what they are doing. I don't know the details of any of these folks but I have read many instances of where the accountant "cooked the books". Personally, I would not let anyone control my money without me looking over their shoulders constantly. My accountant likes me because I review my tax returns and have pointed out errors....errors caused by software programming changes.

You don't have to be smart to be a celeb....just remember that. There are some smart ones out there but they are not the majority.

To be fair, some of the celeb's are brilliant in their chosen career, but don't have a lick of sense or knowledge when it comes to handling money. Some didn't even graduate high school. They have to have someone do that for them. They could look over the shoulder of the money handler all day long & not understand a thing. They can get "taken for a ride" just like any of us possibly could, whether it be with our auto mechanic, our insurance agent, our doctor, our plumber, our stock broker, etc. etc. None us can be an expert in all things. We do what we like to do or know how to do, then we hire out the rest.

I understand that celebrities may not have the knowledge to handle their own financial affairs. Let's use Wayne Newton as an example: He declared bankruptcy in 1992, when he was $20 million in debt. He now has $100 million, and at his salary of $250,000 per week, that amount will continue to grow in leaps and bounds. I think he should pay the people/companies who were cheated out of their money when he filed bankruptcy. My conscience would not allow me to live his lifestyle and sit on his bank accounts, knowing that I had cheated anyone of their just due. (I happen to like Wayne Newton, and he may have repaid people, for all I know--he was just a handy example.)

That makes sense Wanda... to pay back if you come into big coins after filing bankruptcy ... at least from a moral perspective. Not sure how that could legally be administered, tho'.

As for some of these celeb bankruptcies... I'll bet when he was deep in the throes of his $20 million bankruptcy, Wayne Newton was probably still living high on the hog, didnt miss a beat, nor a meal, nor his blue velvet sheets. (Oh, that was someone else's song, wasn't it?LOL) Wouldn't be like us common folk file bankruptcy,... lose house, job, all income, move to a shack or under a bridge or mama's couch. Just like companies that file bankruptcy & go on being "the company" maybe with a slightly different name,,,,, but still rakin' in the coin.

Once you bankrupt, you can pay the debt off. BUT, once you begin paying, you've opened the debt up again. It's why I decided I'd wait until I won the lottery to pay back--so I could pay lock, stock, and barrel. I'd hate to start paying back now and them say, ok, so now you also owe back payments, penalties, and legal fees. No way I could afforded the whole shebang. If I could've, I wouldn't have bankrupted!

Because they know the government will just keep increasing the national debt and or taxes on accountable, responsible people and they will carry the burden for these losers?

This is yet another example of why I don't think income tax rates should be increased on anyone. Instead stop the waste such as this - change the law and don't allow tax obligations to be eliminated in bankruptcy. Why should other people have more of their hard earned money confiscated to pay more tax because these people don't.

I think that before anyone goes spouting off about which people and which companies have declared bankruptcy, they should do some research and then accurately report whether the person/company discharged all of their debts via the BK, or whether they filed for reorganization, which allows them to pay off the debts while the creditors are barred from continually bombarding the person/company with threats. It's irresponsible to claim that all of these people/companies have "declared bankruptcy," implying they've discharged all of their debts, when it is highly likely (even absolutely positively true) that at least some paid off their debts.

And, no, I've never declared bankruptcy. Never even been close. But years ago I worked for an attorney who handled some bankruptcy cases.

I read this morning where Google shifted several Billion dollars to Bermuda to avoid taxes. They would have paid over 2 Billion in taxes had they kept it in the US.

That is common, unfortunately, Jasdip. Why there are so many who have no problem with large companies/conglomerates not paying their fair share of taxes (rates, without loopholes,) is beyond me.

I can't blame companies for taking advantage of legal means to reduce their expenses including their tax expense. Again, the knuckleheads in Washington should do their jobs and eliminate this kind of "waste".

And both times the casinos filed, they did NOT file to discharge their debts -- they filed for reorganization which allowed them to repay the debts.

This is all about entitlement. The rules don't apply in most of their cases so why would the tax rules?!

I think the OP had it right in the first place. Interment goes with deadbeats doesn't it?

Seems to me a lot of this can be resolved by making them operate under the same similar rules the "little people" (and no, I'm not referring to vertically challenged) do. When the studios, networks, etc, pay them, they withhold taxes. Even someone who hires a housekeeper has to do this.

And just because they don't know how to handle money is no excuse. They can afford to hire competent people. If not, use a little common sense and do it yourself instead of trying to bilk everyone else.

OJ Simpson claims to be broke so he doesn't pay his debts. Granted, most people in the entertainment business and even the interment business pay their taxes. Its a few deadbeats that don't. But the point about them maintaining their lifestyle is accurate. Michael Jackson was basically broke and still living the lavish lifestyle when he died. The best thing to happen to his family financially speaking, was for him to die. It brought back a fortune.

My peeve is the ones that hype themselves for fundraising. "Give to the poor, unfortunate _____ (du jour)". Yeah, if you would open your checkbook, wouldn't need our money.

don't forget to include all those political hacks that owe $$$ to the tax-man. they aren't innocent either and why can they get away with it?
