We have champagne before dinner usually and a couple of wines with dinner. Don't need cocktails after all that! The cook has to keep her wits about her!

Absolutely! Even my dear older neighbor told me that she was bringing a nice wine. But it clearly won't be a drinking party I'll enjoy some wine and an after dinner liqueur over dessert.

When my family used to gather at our parent's home for the holidays, there would be absolute hilarity until late into the night. We'd play Trivial Pursuit, card games tell stories long after our parents had gone to bed. This was when we were in our fifties! We all seemed to revert to our puppyhood when we got together.

We have a couple of bottles of wine and a few odd beers in the spare refrigerator, and I always offer, but usually no one has any alcohol. We mostly stick to water and diet sodas.

Rhizo, your family sounds like mine. Sadly, those days are over. Neither my daughter nor my son-in-law drink, but I'll have a beer while I baste th bird. (I use melted butter and white wine for basting.) Later, my neighbor next door, is coming for dessert. We'll probably drink the bottle of red wine I have in the frig. She loves wine and, in fact, gave me that red wine.

We have a family favorite recipe for whisky sours. It would not be a holiday without them!

I don't care for alcohol with food, but a cocktail before eating is usually in order when Sis and I are in the kitchen..wine for her, vodka for me. Sis does usually offer wine with the meal, too.

I don't drink cocktails (didn't take a drink until I was 30 so I missed all of the sweet mixed drinks and didn't develop a taste for beer). So for me it is generally full bodied Italian red wine - and only with food. Kind of hard on the bread with olive oil when I get going. I don't like any form of white white - or champagne. I do like tawny Port or Campari - but it has to be on ice - without soda. And I absolutely will not drink and drive - one sip - no driving for me. There is a family reason I did not drink until I was 30 - fortunately I did not inherit the gene. Think of the invitations I used to get because I wouldn't drink and drive. Once I started to take taxis or call my husband - funny what happened to the invitations!

I might the day after, does that count? Probably Prosecco or sparkling wine while my son has sparkling cider and he comes back from hanging out with his dad. It'll be my turn to be with him.

Some of my family are addicts/alcoholics. Three of the five people are recovering. Yay! At this dinner this week, one is praticing and one will be there who just abstains. I'm inbetween. I am perfectly happy without or with it. I haven't had anything recently, can even officially remember when it was last time?, and can do without when I am around them. I remember all the hiding places and sneaky behaviors they had. Ugh. If you have to hide it, it doesn't sound like much fun!

What's ironic? At one get-together we got on this subject and my son asked me, how does someone fix DTs (we'd watched Intervention recently and I was saying how insane some lives get). This same group was there, and I replied "I dunno. I've never had DTs and I don't know what you do to fix it". Looked at them, and the unequivocal answer, without missing a beat, was "Drink more!". Oh the insanity

It's how I knew I wasn't an alcoholic. That logic totally escapes me. It was logical to them. Mom's been sober 33 years and my siblings are each over 15 years. Each of them, one day at a time.

A small glass of wine and that's it. We're not big drinkers.

I have one bottle each of wine, carbonated apple cider, and three bottles of soda-Coke,Sprite,Diet Coke. That plus coffee should be plenty for 6 people.

When we were still at home my DF used to make Hochzeit Schnapps. In English it is Wedding Whiskey. It is made with burnt sugar and 190 proof Everclear and grenadine for flavor. Some people called it Red Eye. We did. He made it the best. People used to ask him to make it for their weddings. We used to have a shot or two of that before dinner. Now I have a brother who can make it almost as good. With dinner sometimes we had Mogen David wine. It is still one of my favorites. I do not like a dry wine or champagne.

We all love sparkling wine and have a few bottles for all to share...3 bottles for 8 adults...maybe a glass or so a person. It's a tradition from my Irish Great Grandparents. When they came here from Ireland in the 1800's they splurged on sparkling wine on the holidays. I think the men also splurged on more during the year.....LOL!!!

No we won't ...just don't drink.

Last time I had something to drink is when some of the KT gals came here once when Moni had peddled her bike from OK all the way up here To Iowa. I can't remember who brought it...I think it might have been granmahony.
but I can tell you we did a lot of laughing .
