Thanks and can I put Windows on compter with XP?

Thanks for all the help. Now my computer is almost back, hubby working hard. I have XP professional Service Pack 3, AVAST, etc and want to know if I can just add Windows 7 and Office 2007 without a problem I really don't want to wipe the computer out. I did research out the forum first. The computer is a homemade, not a name brand. Any help would be appreciated. I have 400.09 Gigebytes (courtsey of Belarc Advisor)

Adding a current OS to that old of an OS is sometimes a tricky thing to do. I haven't tried it yet personally. What I've read is they highly recommend a clean install. Is there a particular reason you want to overwrite it rather than do a clean install?

You still need to back up everything. It sounds like all your programs need to be reinstalled. It's not as easy as it was to load Windows98 over Windowns95.

Have you run a compatibility check on the hardware? Do you have the drivers for Windows 7 for your hardware? How old is the computer?

I debated about loading Win7 on my XP notebook and decided the price wasn't that much more to get a whole new unit and I could then leave XP intact and possibly combine that with Linux.

Some good tips on the migration possibilities. And a lot of sites talking about the upgrade are below. I glanced through a few of them. Lots of good info to consider.

All professional advice recommends a clean install of Win 7. Partition your 400 GB...leaving 200 on your original drive C: and 200 on a new drive. Install Win. 7 on the new drive leaving XP Pro on your original drive. That way, you can use both and decide whether you want to go with Win.7 on a permanent basis. Also...while you've got both loaded...you can transfer files, etc to Win.7 from your original drive C: XP Pro.

I have my system partitioned and intend to follow my own advice in the near future. I just need more hours in my days/weeks to dedicate some time to do it.

I had casement windows. I attached the window boxes myself. It's hard to find something that will fit them otherwise. I'm sure they make some kind of bracket that might fit. But I just used that metal 'tape' with the holes in it. I wrapped the tape around the windowbox and then attached the tape to the bottom part of the windowsill with screws. I painted the metal to match the box. You need the box to be low so the window doesn't hit it when open.

I sometimes speak up concerning others' suggestions that seem like Chicken Little-type fear mongering. I also think too many people have too many unsupported fears of unlikely risks on the internet and from PC use in general. I'm generally in agreement with Kudzu's comments, but let's be realistic - no one knows what the evil doers will do. Using an XP PC on a network that's unconnected to the internet - I'd say zero risk. Use it in full confidence until the hardware dies. Using an XP PC on the internet? Time will tell. Having capable firewalls, updated security software, etc., is a must for all PCs with all operating systems anyway. I have an XP PC that I use very occasionally that has all the protection reasonably available. I'll be sure to remove any personal info and will use it carefully. If I see any hint of odd activity, I'll just replace it. For most PCs old enough to have XP, spending good money to put a newer Windows on old hardware seems a poor choice to me.

Thanks, folks, I'll pass these suggestions on to her. She lives more than 100 miles from the nearest "computer shop" and is trying to fix the problem with her nephew's help. It has them both stumped. Yes, ever since she installed Microsoft.NET framework 2.0, service pack 2 security update for Windows Vista Service pack she can no longer search for anything (using any search engineÂGoogle, Yahoo, Mozilla). An index page will come up but none of the links/sites will open. She canÂt X-out of that screen. She has to hit Alt/ctl/delete and restart task manager; the whole system closes down and she has to log back on. She can open her bookmarks, but canÂt go anywhere from them. She has a Compaq Presario computer. Windows Vista home basic. She has run McAfeeÂs virtual technician and security scans. They said everything was fine. It isnÂt. She has shut down and restarted her computer several times. Nothing seems to work.

I'm now leaning more towards doing the transfers through external hard drive (gulp) - however, I'm confused on how to hook up the new computer with the old computer still hooked up. Would I just plug it in, and then connect it to our wireless home network? It seems the (old) monitor has only one hook-up spot which the old computer is plugged into. Should I wait for the new monitor to arrive (which is supposed to be about a month from now according to the estimated delivery date)? Or do I need the new computer hooked into a monitor just for transferring data? Now I'm thinking maybe I just need the new computer plugged into the monitor, and the XP computer not plugged in - lol - I'm confused. Maybe I should wait until everything arrives.

The only time I did that was when I was a real novice and didn't do the compatibility test. I got 4 pages of things that weren't compatible and one was my burner. Never tried it again. You need to check out the price of new PCs before you invest to much in yours.

How much RAM do you have? You old computer may become painfully s..l..o..w....... with Windows 7 if you don't have enough/right type of RAM.

before you even consider windows 7 for it you definitely need to run the compatibility tests on that pc.

I too would advise if it passes the compatibility test that you do a clean install, wipe off the old and install the new.

My information says that you can not start with WinXP to install Windows7. If you have Win XP, you should do a clean install. Reformat the hard drive and partition it to your liking. It makes sense to divide your drive into a partition for the system and software plus another partiton for your data files. If you have a large number of email files such as your genealogical correspondence, it may make sense to install this utiltiy and data files in the data partition of your disk.

If you have Vista, then you may be able to istall to Win7, but a clean install is recommended.

Many of the older drivers will not work in Win 7. As other posters have stated, before you do anything, perform a compatability check. For incompatibilities found, check to see if new drivers are available for Win 7. I suspect that some older equipment will not have new drivers. Once these checks have been made, you can decide if you want to make the leap. Most folks I know who had Vista gladly changed to Win 7 because Vista was unloved. If you have WinXP, service pack 3, you may want to wait a bit longer. Win XP, SP 1 and 2, are no longer supported by Microsoft.

Deceided not to put Windows 7 on this computer. Maybe in the future will built up a new one.

Thanks to all, did the compatability check and put upgrad advisor on desktop. Hubby has all this on his computer and since he has built up both, understands this so much more.
