Rest in peace, Wayne Howard. 10/31/42 - 11/18/13

Linda is now from Alabama, formerly from GA.

I just got off the phone with her, and she's doing as well as expected.

No funeral, no memorial, as per Wayne's wishes. He's been ill for quite some time and had hospice care.

Laura and I lunched with Linda last week.

Prayers, thoughts, hugs and love for Linda during this sad time.

Linda, our husbands had a lot of the same heart problems so, while you've known this would probably happen, it doesn't help the sense of loss you are feeling. We were both lucky to have our men as long as we did.

Know you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. You are a strong woman so count on your strength to help you through this. (((Linda)))

P.S. Harry didn't want any kind of service either, and so we didn't.

i am so very sorry for your loss. i know exactly what you are going through. i see where you posted on thunder's thread about her losing her husband. i'm glad you saw that thread. i also posted there so i won't repeat what i said. the only difference now is that i did go back to my doctor and we are trying a different anti-depressant. it is helping, taking the edge off. i wish i had done this sooner. it's something you might give some thought to. i know, believe me, that at this point you don't think a little pill can help but it might be worth a try. except for the fact that i did not have to deal with young children at the time of gary's death, everything else you express are feelings i went through and to some extent, still do after just over 2 years. all i can tell you is that, believe it or not, time is what you need. your loss is so fresh, you are very likely still in a state of shock. next will come denial, some anger. they tell me that eventually i will get to the point of acceptance but i don't see that happening. i will never accept the fact that the love of my life is gone forever but i am learning to live with it. perhaps dreams of your husband will come to you some day. don't rush it, your mind just isn't ready yet. when it is, it will happen. when the shock wears off, you will find strength you never knew you had. just remember this...death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal. Hi Cinful...I know exactly what you mean...when the doctors told her 3-6 months left, I thought I would never stop crying, and I didn't want our last moments together to be miserable. I know we said everything we wanted and needed to say to each other, but in the end, I still worry that there may have been something else left unsaid, something I forgot to ask her, or something from the past that we just wanted to remember. We only got about 2 months together at the end, and even when it finally happened it seemed like it just couldn't be happening already. I am sorry that you are alone, I do have children and a husband, but we all lived together, and they really do not understand what I am going through. I feel like I am alone, except that I can't just break down all the time, I have to be strong...it feels like it is killing me to do that though. I really just want to crawl into bed and stay there. The one thing that keeps me going is that my mom asked me to. She told me to be strong for HER, and to be happy for HER. I am not happy, but I am being as strong as I can be. That means not thinking of her too often, or all I would do is cry. But I know she knows that. She bought me a journal at the end, and I didn't think it would help, but it has. I write to her as much as I can, everyday in the beginning, and I tell her the things I would have told her if she were here. It does help. My mom was my everything too...even though I have other family, and children, she was it. Every moment of the day we were together...have been for 42 years. She has sent me signs since she's been gone, I know a lot of people don't believe in that, and think it is wishful thinking, but it's not. Keep an open mind after everything is over, don't shut yourself down. Stay with your mom till the end, try not to feel guilty...I know that even though my mom and I talked about everything, I still felt guilty when she passed, like maybe there was more I could have done. I am trying to get past that. I feel so bad for you, and your dad...maybe try to be strong for him, as I have to for my baby...it helps to be there for someone else, when all you want to do is go with your mom. I know at least for me that is true. When she first got sick, I thought I would go with her in the end, but I cannot go right now. My family needs me, my baby needs me. I think that is why he happened so late in my life...he was my lifeline from God...Take care, please let me know how you are doing, and I will do the same.

thank you all for the thoughts and prayers. I'm a little more hopeful today since she has defied what the Dr's predicted (that she wouldn't survive the first night). No one from work has called so I'm thinking no news is good news. Please keep her in your prayers. She deserves to see her new grandson and her daughter getting married. Diane

callieandkarin, I want to respond first to your Eeeevil Stepparent stereotype. I do not believe that the stepparent is evil in general. Some of the step mothers that I happen to know are among my closest friends that I have known for years. They are all really good people. They are kind, smart, attractive, wonderful women. They are well liked by others. However, when each of these women have remarried, they each married men with children. In every case, I thought that if anyone could pull it off, these women could, because they each genuinely like children to begin with. But in each case, (of the women that I know who have married a man with children) each found it very difficult to like "his" children. Each went on to have new children with their new husband, and somehow things got worse. I am surprised that they cannot bring themselves to like...let alone love, his children, but they do not. Does that make them evil? Of course not. Does it make a wonderful loving environment for a child to grow up in and feel loved and accepted? Sadly, no. Are there legions of stepchildren who are "deeply loved" by their stepparents? I hope so, but I personally do not know any. If there are, please comment on the forum. Are there legions of children who are taken better care of by their step parents than by their bio-parent...absolutely. Because many stepparents have exceptional character and will "step up to the plate" and do the right thing...regardless of how they feel. While the bio-parent may indeed be only self interested, even if their behavior hurts their own children. My response was in response to lee676 saying that "sooner or later he will realize that divorce means parents leaving each other, and NOT parents leaving children". Often parents DO leave children too in a divorce. Most do not exactly mean too. It just "happens". They once lived at home with their children. Divorce happens and they remarry. They now see their own child every weekend or every other weekend, if they live nearby. But you have so many parents (and lets tell it like it is, and say fathers for the most part) who remarry someone, and he ends up seeing his children less and less. For many, many, many children...they only see their own father over summer break, and maybe a holiday or two , because he lives in another state, with his new wife and children. Or perhaps he does not live that far away, but his new wife gets upset when he brings his children to their house, and so the visits are dwindling down to lunch at mcDonalds or something. Yes, there are many that do their best to make the children feel a part of things...but there are many, many who don't...and you cannot pretend that does not happen in divorce. It simply does. Obviously not in every case, but in many, many divorces it does. Sadly. In regards to your comment about Dr. Laura Schlesinger...you have a woman who rubs many people the wrong way...and many times...I disagree with something she has said, or I think that her delivery is rude. However, I disagree with your comment that she is ignorant. She has spent her life talking to people (including children) who need guideance with problems. I believe that she has a unique view from talking to people for the last (I don't know...30 years) that few people have. Whether I agree or disagree with her...I would never call her ignorant. And I respect that she will stand up (alone) on something she believes in, and will NEVER buckle to popular opinion or views, like most people do. They go along with what ever they think will impress others. It takes courage to stand up...alone...and say what people do not want to hear. I respect that because we never see anyone willing to actually do it. And take the heat for what they said, without trying to rephrase it or make excuses or blame. To simply stand up and say that they believe something and not back down to the masses. How many are willing to do that? So ignorant? She is in no way ignorant. Controversial...absolutely.

Linda, I'm so sorry.
Mom died 2 years ago and she didn't want any kind of a service either. She and my step-father always said that they wanted to have family and close friends at a restaurant and play their favourite music.

That's what we had for Mom, booked a private room at an Italian restaurant and played The Eagles, her favourite band.

My step-father has mom's ashes in a beautiful wooden box.....not an urn style thing at all.

My sympathy are with you for the loss of your husband. The only thing I might suggest is to have some sort of service, even if it is very private. When my folks passed away, I never got the closure I needed and that is important..

Marie, my Daddy didn't want any service either. Just cremation so that's what we did. I made it so much easier on all of us. That's when Wayne and I decided that's what we wanted too.

My first husband died in a traffic accident in 1980 and we did the whole funeral service. I didn't find any closure in it only more pain and agony. It's not a ritual I find comforting. But then again I'm not of fan of "ceremonies" of any kind.

Sorry for your loss. I lost my husband in August. The pain for me was the worst during the first month. Now that it is November I am starting to feel life is going to be ok. I hope you find the sunshine after your loss.

So sorry about your husband. My husband had pancreatic cancer and was at home under the care of hospice. Even though you know it is going to happen, it is very hard when they are gone.
Take care of yourself and do what feels right for you.

Thank you all so much for all your kind words. I've tried to stay busy this week and so far I'm doing pretty good. We had a family birthday party for my DGS today at my house.. He is 7. This was planned last week and I was not about to disappoint that sweet little boy.

Linda, I can't believe your GS is 7 already! It's good to keep busy and while this time of year will surely have some sad moments, keeping so busy sure does help!
