Lost my friend Magge (LAb) yesterday

Maggie was 14 years old, I had her since she was 5 or 6 weeks old. I was there when she was put down. The crying was so bad. My vet was so sweet. Maggie had alot wrong with her.Now she is with my husband, mom and molly her other buddy. But I still feel very guilty. My other 2 dogs were looking at me when I came in last night. Casper didn't even want togo to bed with me. He stayed away from me. I didn't understand why. I love Maggie so much. She was a good dog. Never did anything wrong. I pretty sure she is in heaven waiting for me with the rest of them. No more dogs for me after casper and BJ. No more. I went thru this a dozen times. I must be nuts. Its hard.

I'm so sorry for your loss of Maggie. We got our first dog 2 years ago last March. After my daughter was killed 3 months later, he was a godsend for us all. Our pets are always there to give love and listen and let you cry and never judge. I know it has to be hard to lose them . I cant even think about the time when we will lose Shadow. I believe there is a heaven for our faithful companions where they are romping and playing and waiting for us.

I'm so sorry about Maggie. I know also how attached we can become to our pets. I'll never forget my favorite dog when I was growing up. When Teddy got killed, I cried and cried and cried like it was a person who had died. After I married, we had a few that we got very attached to also and then was so sad when they left us. After my daughter was killed, my husband and I decided to get two more dogs and we love them to death, and I know we will have to go through their loss too. I'm like you, though. I really don't think I want any more animals after these two are gone.

You say he has trouble with dexterity and getting the wallet back into his pocket then losing it. So maybe the answer is not to get a different wallet, but to not carry the wallet a pocket. A lot of older people, both men and women, (and lots of not so old persons too) carry their stuff around in a belted pouch. Sometimes these are called 'fanny packs' but they can be worn in front. They are big enough to not require a lot of dexterity to stuff things into it. Using a biker wallet with a chain connecting to the inside of the pouch would help even more. I don't think one of these fanny packs would draw attention to suspicions of "carrying a lot of money around" as they are very popular with lots of people. A lot of elderly use them because they have to carry so many medications around. If your dad is 'old school' he may not take to the idea of using something he views as a purse but it's worth suggesting it to him.

I just found this thread again. Reminded of the pain of losing our sweet Libby, we found ourselves having to say goodbye to another beloved pet just last week. Our precious Boo Boo Kitty made her way to Rainbow Bridge following a year of unexplained weight loss and finally a rare cancer diagnosis 6 months ago. She was a rescue kitty we welcomed to our home in the Fall of 1993. We don't know exactly how old she was when we got her but at least 6 months at the time. She must have been getting close to 17 years old when she passed. We love all our pets and they are each unique in personality and demeanor, but Boo was such a bright, intuitive, affectionate and totally mischievous little soul that there will never be another like her. Always demanding the center of attention, but in such an adorable fashion that no one could deny her. She was the best companion of my husband, who historically was never a pet lover. Yet his heart was won over within the first moments of her arrival to our home, when Boo immediately crawled onto his big chest, wrapped her paws around his neck and began purring her acceptance of her new family. From that moment they were inseparable and shared a lifelong bond of love and affection, mixed with mutual joy as they practiced the art of "play battle". Boo hiding and pouncing on my husband from all possible angles of attack until he would pin her in his arms, smothering her with hugs. As her battle with cancer caused her body to thin, tire more easily and struggle to control normal functions, she still remained our loving, affectionate, ever present companion who continued to insist on being the focus of our attention. She spent long evenings cuddled in our laps, telling us it was ok to just sit and enjoy our time together, the chores and schedules could wait...our time together was limited and thus more precious. We are so grateful to have had the honor and blessing of sharing our lives with our beautiful Boo. The pain of parting is so sharp and intense, we continue to see her in our minds eye around every corner, in her favorite sunny spots and waking us in the mornings with her soft paws upon our cheeks. As much as it hurts now, the years of shared love and memories make it all worthwhile. Someday we will cross that Rainbow Bridge, warmly greeted and surrounded by our precious companions who wait for us there now. Kate I am so sorry for your loss. I do not have pets, but I have in the past and I know how they are part of the family. My daughter has a 'zoo' and they have a small party business. When they moved the pink corn snake that belonged to my granddaughter got sick and died. My granddaughter was so sad amd some of her friends made fun of her but you do get attached to your pets regardless of the type. Rosa

So so sorry to hear of your loss. Yeah, the older I get the harder it is.... and I think also the older the cat, the harder it is. .... Just because the bonds are that much stronger ... you've shared so much. Sure they've lived a long happy life, but that doesnt necessarily translate into it being easier to accept. In fact the opposite. I lost my old girl (22 y.o.) a few yrs back and its still hard to think of her without pangs of missing her. Do cry, as hard and as often as you need to - its nature's way of releasing stress hormones. And make no mistake, this is a major loss in anyone's book. In time the sharp painful edges of the grief will soften. One thing that's always helped me is to write your cat's biography now while its still fresh - every little detail, how he came into your life, funny stories, quirks, the sound of his meow, everything.... maybe even read it aloud to your friends/relations. It helps to honor him, which helps with the grief... and also Ive found that when I read these stories years later, Im so glad I wrote them down because otherwise I surely would have forgotten.

Such a hard time for you, I know. My collie-shepherd, Caroline, died on July 4. She was 14, too. It's been a difficult year because so many of my pets got old at the same time. We lost three cats and two dogs, although one of the dogs was young, and killed by a bear.

Please don't feel guilty. It's clear that you loved Maggie, and it would have been even clearer to her. I'm sure she had a wonderful life with you. If only they lived longer. Much, much longer.

Sorry about your Maggie.

I was just told by a doctor that I might be allergic to our kitty girl. The doc said that I might have to get rid of her. I said that I would rather cut off one of my fingers.
Pets are so important!

Again, so sorry about your loss, but you did the best thing possible for her.

I also wanted to add that for people unable to have their own children, like me, a pet can help ease that grieving, which can leave an empty hole. Pets are not a substitute for children, but they can be a wonderful asset to our well-being.

Absolutely, Wendy. I was infertile for years, and I remember how my dogs helped me through that period. And now, in my "empty nest," my current dogs and cats provide devoted company and are more than happy to have my love and affection.

I couldn't imagine ever losing either one of my cats (Tikki 1 year, & Monty 10months)..They are still young and I look forward to many many years of having them. Pets are absolutely a member of the family and it does hurt to lose them...the bond owners have with their aniamls is amazing. I look forward to coming home from work everyday to have them greet me in the window. I love it!!

juju just remember you gave Maggie 14 wonderful years of life and think of all the memories you have of her and know you will see her again one day..

I pray for your healing.....it can be very hard when we lose our fur babies......I know when they cross over they wait for us in a most beautiful place, safe and happy and young and healthy again.
Think of the joy when it is your time to cross over, how beautiful to have your fur babies there to greet mom once again. This will happen.
Down the road, when it is time, I pray you will allow yourself to give into the love you hold in your heart for another fur baby.....remember there are many geriatric fur kids out there that need someone with your love....
