... you fix it!".

Seems to be a worthwhile approach to take to the average screw-up.

En route to the library in the dark tonight, I found a piece of 2" x 4" lumber about two feet long, lying in the driving lane of the highway, at an intersection ...

... so turned around and, as there was no traffic, leaned out of the door and picked it up.

Who knows ... maybe I'll find a use for it, some time.

Wait a minute ... weren't you the guy who's said that he should reduce clutter, in order to minimize the unhappiness of his kids who have to clean the place up, after his passing??

Sounds like something my DH would do.He is forever coming to a screeching halt,(of course watching for traffic behind or oncoming).Sometimes backing up or even jumping out of the truck to pick up a screwdriver,wrench or other such item off the road! He has acquired quite a few nice tools,and one time a huge,very expensive chain.He calls it "highway shopping".LOL

Hi Jannie, If one of your daughters, at age 15, invests One Whole Dollar ... ... and manages to have it earn 5% rate of return throughout ... ... through 50 years of time ... ... when she hits the ripe old age of 65 ... that dollar will have multiplied 2-1/2 times - it'll be worth $11.00 and change. If she can manage a 10% return, it'll grow to $117.00 and change. No allowance in either case for the erosion of annual income by income tax, and of the value of one's dollar-denominated assets due to inflation. And when she buys a pack of cigarettes - she pays a lot more than a Buck for each one of them. Most of which goes up in smoke - though some stays in her lungs. And the residue can cause a lot of trouble. Can she imagine what people would think of her were she to stand on a main street corner in town and set on fire as many dollars as she spent on smokes that week? And do that at that street corner - every week? People would say that she was nuts. But - that would do her a lot less harm than using those dollars to buy smokes. Trouble is, though - in the U.S., I think that she'd go to jail: it's a Federal offence to destroy money, as it is Federal property. I do hope that your daughters decide that it is a destructive habit - and one of the worst addictions. I don't want to be a slave to a person - much less to a white paper tube filled with dead leaves!! That sounds some stupid, to me. As Dad used to say, "Looks like that person drove their pigs to a darned poor market"!! Good wishes to you - and especially them - for a New Year filled with common sense. ole joyful

Hi Lindy Lu Who ... ... well, a WA-HO-O-O (not a boo-hoo) about that one! Thank you for making such a wonderful addition to this discussion! I have some Hanes ... and they're blue, too! But ... I've never seen them configured like that! Or ... so occupied, either, for that matter. Also, with elastic still intact - so they're not available for this purpose. Yet. Isn't this a wonderful idea? No more worries about the shortcomings (or, more accurately, long goings) of the elastic: in fact, if it were even somewhat tight, it might cause a problem. If any of you would like to use my old undies in such a fashion, I'd be glad to spring for the postage, even trans-border, to help the ancient briefs find some useful things to do throughout their retirement! Or, more accurately, delay their retirement! I can guaratee that I'll not send holey ones ... and you don't need to worry about the "baggy" that someone referred to, as the only part that's stretched is the elastic (possibly due to not having large body parts to ride herd on). And no stained or dirty ones, either ... solely ones that look to be only in slightly used condition. Then, with these still-useful things having their remaining useful life taken care of, I can go buy new ones with a happy heart!! Adding it as an extra errand when going to town to take care of several needs at a time ... ... and turning off the engine and coasting downhill, and as approaching signal lights when they turn yellow, half a block away ... to be passed by people pushing the gas pedal ... then hitting the brakes about a hundred feet before the "Stop" line. I staked a couple of rows of peas and picked some of the regular and of the edible pod kind. Took them to a nighbour who treats me well, and their daughter and SIL were there, playing cards. Daughter loves peas, I gave her several of the edible pod kind ... and she shelled them and ate them. En route home, I thought that I should have taken the edible pod ones back and given her some of the regular kind ... if she was going to shell them, anyway. Had some of each kind for supper - second picking - delicious! I hope that you had an enjoyable weekend ... and are looking forward to the coming week with anticipation. ole joyful

I haven't been out much this week - staying home and getting the establishment more or less back in shape. An art show has take over the village church today, and when I saw one of the old guys walking down the street away from the church, I'd forgotten that we were to meet at a seniors' apartment building this week, till I got to the church, then as I was going to the meeting place, passed him, there was traffic (four-lane street), I went down a short way and turned around, came back to pick him up. He was nowhere to be seen ... I almost went into a store there ... then saw someone walking down a side street, drove down there, picked him up and we went to the Old Farts' Coffee Hour. I wrote a story about the church magazine's situation, our discussion group, and my getting to know the other members in a much more in-depth situation than we usually find, maybe it would be a good idea to suggest it for other churches, to send to the magazine. I'd checked it with the minister of that church and went to pick it up today: she had minimal suggestions as to editorial revisions. Had a good visit with another cancer survivor that I've known for a dozen years, both members of an investment group: he'd had radiation and chemo at the same time, not a pleasant experience, and one doc had suggested that he might have only a few months to live ... but he's still here, and going strong. Fewer visits to bathroom, so feel that I'm on a much longer leash. At one grocery store today a staff person had picked up a stray bag of milk, and another said that he was careful about picking up stray items near the bathroom when the door was closed ... and a man came out just then to reclaim his bag. I thanked them for having that available bathroom, as I had made good use of it several times in recent months, sometimes when given quite short notice from an interior authority of an essential change in my plans. Weather's been rainy and chilly, but warmer, and the landlord cultivated both gardens yesterday, initial pass. He took out a full tractor trailer load of sod, yesterday afternoon: I was embarrassed, for I hadn't removed some of the stakes. So I guess that spring has finally sprung. "Spring is sprung ... the grass is riz ... I wonder where ... the flowers is?". Actually, forsythia and daffodils are out ... and some grape hyacinths down behind the shed. Can't resist this: one of the items passed around at the Old Farts' was a colour "pic" of a rather rough landscape, with a smiling civilian with an automatic rifle in a saddle atop a moose carrying large antlers ... titled, "Canadian Border Patrol ... watching for illegal Americans". Hope you're all having a good day - good wishes for the rest of the week. ole joyfuelled ... who, sitting at table right next to the stove, forgot to turn the burner off under the stew pot last night ... and had some scraping to do as a result

Good for you, OJ. Who knows, that piece of wood could have been the cause of an accident.......and YOU prevented it. It is the thing to do, plain and simple. When I grocery shop, I have to use a riding cart and often, if something has fallen or been knocked off a shelf, I will pick it up and put it back.....just the thing to do.

I always say, "A man (or woman) can't have too many boards on hand for repairing things or for 'projects."

I wish more people had your dad's philosophy. These days it seems the common saying is you mess up - you cover it up! I can't understand what's the big problem with saying "I goofed" and then accept the consequences. Usually it's not that big a deal. Learn from your mistakes and move on. I've learned a *lot* in my life!

And yes, a chunk of 4x2 can be handy. You have a baseball bat, a weapon, a shelf, and more.

Funny you mention that Dotmom, I do the same thing. It really irritates me to see people decide against getting something and just leave it anywhere. Put it back! The bigger stores around here have people go around with carts just to pick up that stuff. They'll leave packages of meat, frozen items, and of course you'll find opened and emptied packages of most anything tucked in the back of a shelf. Makes you want to scream.

That philosophy seems to fit the average dog/cat fairly well, don't you think?

How many dogs/cats do you know (of the two-legged kind!)??

Hi OJ. Well, actually many people seem to have adopted the "dog" philosophy, if you can't eat it, play with it or mate with it, lift your leg to it and walk away...

That is, not to start a "cat fight". :)

Cats love to play with mice ...

... once they've got them close enough to immobilized that there's no way that they're going to be able to get away - but not too close, if one is going to have any fun.

Guess who has a nice almost new short handled flat shovel?! Someone lost one by our mailbox. It is now ours. I went to get the paper Monday morning and it was laying there. Someone probably was in too big of a hurry pulling out of the drive way of the church/school across the street that morning. It can be pretty dangerous before and after school around here! The shovel had been used for black top, but not much!

Thanks for picking up that 2x4, OJ.

Lol cynic! As the only black top work done around here lately has been several miles away I didn't bother. No one missing here, human or furry, unless you count my mind, which I lost years ago!
