When changing health care providers, can you...

... get away with not transferring your records?

Open enrollment began yesterday to change health care providers at work.

I have had a number of health issues many of which have been resolved over the years but still follow me around in my records.

The last time I tried to get my own insurance (7 years ago when I had my own business), I was denied coverage because of things like hormonal migraines (gone after hysto), asthma (gone after allergy shots), FMS (in remission due to good management), depression (gone after meds) and other assorted ailments that are now either gone or easily manageable. Yet they follow you around for a number of years with insurance companies.

I want to start fresh with no record following me so if and when I leave full-time employment, I can get affordable insurance. Six years ago Kaiser charged $600/mo just for me. I'm sure it would be more now. If you're not working, that's a lot of money.

I plan to pull all my test results and x-rays before I leave my current health care provider (also Kaiser) but do not want to have my records follow me. I tried to read the HIPAA documents but it was an awful lot to digest.

Anyone know if this is possible? I know it might vary from state to state (I'm in Calif.) so people in CA in the know, pipe in.

My husband's health care insurance is way too expensive and because he's a sole agent (ironically in the insurance industry), he does not qualify for group rates. It was his heath care provider that denied me.

I think not feeling "stuck" in a stressful job would go a long way to easing my strife.

I am keeping my eyes open for other employment but my skills lie in design, a job that typically involves high pressure, and tight deadline driven projects. 60-70 hour weeks are not unusual for me and I have been given an iPhone and laptop so I can be on call basically 24/7. I realized not too long ago, at age 58, life is getting shorter and I need to start enjoying life before it drains out of me.

I don't need any lectures about what I want to do or warnings about my health. I'm very savvy about my conditions, where I am with them and what specialists I will continue to see. Right now the biggest contributor to my health issues is the daily stress from my job. If I know I don't have these old health issues following me around, it will be easier to cope and/or make a decision to leave if necessary.
